Eli Degibri - "Israeli Song" Anzic Records [Review] #jazz

Saxophonist Eli Degibri's name may be the least familiar one on the cover of Israeli Song. His quartet mates on this superb disc are of the highest level; it would be hard to find higher profile or finer accompanists. With that lineup--two legendary stars in drummer Al Foster and bassist Ron Carter--and, in pianist Brad Mehldau, a newer huge talent who keeps gathering momentum--it becomes a matter, for the leader, of holding his own. He does so with high energy, aplomb and originality, with both his playing and composing.

Degibri penned six of the eleven tunes in the set, but the quartet kicks off with Mehldau's “Unrequited,” offered originally on the pianist's Art of the Trio, Volume 3: Songs (Warner Brothers, 1998). Degibri, on soprano saxophone, gives the tune a yearning mood in front of Mehldau's adroit accompaniment and extraordinary solo, evolving from pensive sadness and peaking with anguish, before settling, perhaps, into wistful acceptance.

Full of smooth flowing jauntiness, Degibri's “Mr. R.C.” features the saxophonist on tenor. Another Degibri-penned gem, “Judy the Dog,” rushes full speed ahead, with the leader's tenor sending out flurries of notes in a well-told story, beginning with a smolder and gathering into high flames.

The saxophonist covers Dizzy Gillespie's classic “Bebop” in a duet with Foster. The pair seems to push each other into new territories--two eloquent musicians arguing a point, batting ideas and back and forth, and coming to a tentative agreement in the end.

“Manic Depressive,” written by Degibri and Barak Mori, wends its way through the bluesy wee hours, on a tune that sounds like something Ben Webster would have dug into--a delivery by the leader and his cohorts full of feeling and deep down soul.

Foster and Carter each contribute a tune to the set: the drummer's funky and upbeat “Look What You Do To Me,” and bassist's quirky and tight-grooved “Third Plane,” which gives the leader another chance to stretch out on tenor.

Degibri explores the ever-familiar “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” played straight in simple, beautiful glory, with just a hard-blowing tenor horn and Carter's big, solid bass lines. Degibri then wraps things up with the title tune, an inward piece featuring the leader's tenor and Meldau's lovely, near-classical piano explorations.

Degibri, with four previous CDs as a leader to his name, has crafted his breakout set with Israeli Song.

Spanish Harlem Orchestra "Viva la Tradición" Release On Concord Picante 9/28/10 #jazz

Concord Picante is proud to announce the release of Viva la Tradicón, the newest album from the Grammy winning 13-piece collective Spanish Harlem Orchestra. The 12-track collection marks the orchestra’s debut album for Concord Picante and overall fourth outing. Viva la Tradicón takes up where its three predecessors left off – stirring the pot of mid-20th century influences and keeping the salsa simmering for current and future generations.

Now in its tenth year, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra is one of the most formidable and authentic Latin jazz combos of today. Yet for all of its appeal with contemporary audiences, the group’s success is actually rooted in the past. A lively and energetic affair, Viva la Tradición draws on inspiration from the music’s history and enduring traditions. The collection is comprised largely of original compositions and arrangements of classic salsa tunes by bandleader/founder Oscar Hernandez. Hernández is one of the most respected musicians in Latin & Latin Jazz music. His track record & discography are extensive. On the new CD he enlists the support of veteran composer and arranger Gil Lopez on three of Lopez’s compositions (“Son De Corazon,” “Nuestra Cancion,” and “Regala De Dios).

Front to back, Viva la Tradición is very much a nod to the countless artists – well known and obscure – who helped usher salsa music into the cultural mainstream several decades ago. “Preserving that legacy and introducing it to new audiences in a new century,” says Hernandez, “is more important than being the musical flavor of the month.”

1. La Salsa Dura 5:56
2. Mi Herencia Latina 5:31
3. Son De Corazon 6:27

Jane Monheit "Home" In Stores Now #jazz

"Home," Jane Monheit's eagerly anticipated new CD, was released by Emarcy/Universal Records on September 21st, 2010. An ode to the golden age of the jazz standard - the genre which Jane identifies with most - "Home" celebrates the treasured tracks of songwriters and lyricists past and present whom Monheit greatly admires including Rodgers and Hart and Schwartz & Dietz. A sumptuously sung passionate song cycle of 12 tunes self-produced by the modern-day jazz diva, "Home" is Monheit's tenth CD and will be accompanied by a world tour beginning in the Fall. Accompanying Monheit on "Home" are long-time Monheit band-members Michael Kanan (piano), Neal Miner on bass and Rick Montalbano on drums, who were joined on the CD by guest artists John Pizzarelli (vocals and guitar), Peter Eldridge (vocals), Frank Vignola (guitar), Joe Magnarelli (trumpet and flugelhorn), Mark O'Connor (violin) and Larry Goldings (piano).

Ray Charles "Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters" Concord Oct 26 #jazz [video]

Concord Records is celebrating the 80th birthday of the legendary Ray Charles with a special gift for his legions of fans: Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters. This treasure trove of newly discovered recordings, highlighted by a duet with fellow icon Johnny Cash, will become available on October 26th, 2010.

Culled from four decades worth of demos and other previously unreleased material, Rare Genius showcases the remarkable artistic vision, stylistic range and emotionally rich vocals that crafted Charles enduring legacy. Listening to the ten gems from the '70s, '80s and '90s that comprise this CD, fans will have no trouble envisioning the late singer rocking back and forth at the piano as he effortlessly segues between R&B/soul, pop, country and gospel. "Ray would always get inside the meaning of a lyric and make the listener believe every word," says Concord Music Group Chief Creative Officer, John Burk. "His vocals carried incredible emotion and intensity, even on demo tapes. What we have here with Rare Genius is on par with some of his greatest works."

And that's crystal clear right from the album's sparkling opener, "Love's Gonna Bite You Back." The March 1980 session track features an upbeat horn arrangement behind what Rare Genius liner notes author Bill Dahl calls "a Charles vocal that's a signature mixture of sandpaper grit and heavenly goodness." Up next is the stunning ballad "It Hurts to Be in Love," which underscores the album's main thematic focus and one of Charles' favorite subjects: the ups and down of romance. Another compelling standout is the gospel-stirred Charles and Cash duet on Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me, Lord?" Discovered in the Sony vaults, the song was produced by Billy Sherrill in Nashville and recorded in 1981 for an anticipated release on a CBS album. For unknown reasons, that didn't come to pass. What's more important, however, is the emotional charge you get listening to these two powerful voices come together in this spirited and inspired pairing. Except for "Lord," the nine other Rare Genius tracks including the soul-drenched "I Don't Want No One But You," a blues-infused cover of songwriter Hank Cochran's country classic "A Little Bitty Tear" and the joyous "I'm Gonna Keep on Singin'" were found in the vault at Charles' R.P.M. International Studios in Los Angeles. Adding a little sweetening to some of the sparse, stripped-down tracks was a team of top-notch musicians and artists: guitarists Keb' Mo' and George Doering, organist Bobby Sparks, trumpeter Gray Grant, trombonist Alan Kaplan, bassists Trey Henry and Chuck Berghofer, drummers Gregg Field and Ray Brinker and background vocalist Eric Benet.

As with its Concord predecessor, 2004's Grammy-winning Album of the Year Genius Loves Company, Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters is another fitting tribute to Charles, who would have turned 80 on September 23, 2010. It's a fresh, vibrant reaffirmation of the music icon's unparalleled artistry and legacy.

Jazz Vocalist Rob Keiter Releases Classic Love Songs On "The Glory Of Love"

As Rob Keiter stood at the microphone to record his vocals for “This Nearly Was Mine,” the opening track of his The Glory of Love album, a torrential flood of tears burst forth unexpectedly. Although he could not contain his raw emotions while singing the heartfelt words about love lost, he sang anyway. What was captured on the recording was something special and it established the tone for the entire collection of classic love songs in jazz settings, which will be released by Sketchin Records on October 26th.

“When I finished singing, I went into the control room to try to explain what happened. Everyone was silent. They felt it. The song (“This Nearly Was Mine”) was recorded in one take. We agreed not to record it again, that what we got was genuine and could not be duplicated,” revealed Keiter.

When Keiter began the recording sessions with producers Amber and Rob Whitlock for The Glory of Love, he was in the midst of a dark period following the breakup of a twenty-three year marriage. Singing the songs that comprise the collection enabled him to grieve as well as to find new hope. “Even though I had lost love, I wanted to sing love songs because I still believe in love. Having sung my entire life, I would say that I truly found my voice as a result of that experience (in the studio),” he explained.

Keiter’s voice is suave, sophisticated, and silky smooth yet rich with feeling and warmth. Although The Glory of Love is distinctly jazz – contemporary, swing and straight-ahead – Keiter and The Whitlock’s culled material with jazz, pop, R&B and even theatrical roots. He recorded jazzy versions of eleven songs written by the likes of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Neil Sedaka, John Lennon & Paul McCartney, and a pair of songs each by Hal David & Burt Bacharach and Stevie Wonder. The Whitlock’s penned an original song, “Grateful For A Pleasant Trip,” specifically for Keiter. Backing the crooner in the studio was a fine cast of musicians including Grammy winner Randy Brecker (trumpet), Rob Whitlock (piano), Pat Kelley (guitar), Trey Henry (bass), Cliff Almond (drums), Amber Whitlock (vocals) and a horn section consisting of Wayne Bergeron (trumpet and flugelhorn), Andy Martin (trombone) and John Rekevics (saxes and flutes). Radio stations will have a difficult time choosing between a handful of emphasis tracks such as “Laughter in the Rain,” “What The World Needs Now,” “Looking For Another Pure Love,” “For No One” and “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life.”

After he started singing at age six in the church choir, Keiter later picked up the trombone and keyboard. He learned the art of improvisation while studying the trombone. As a teenager in Fort Lauderdale, he played in a band with Rob Whitlock, for whose musical talents he had great admiration. Keiter earned a degree in music performance at the University of Texas. During this time, he developed his skills as a scat singer, which he incorporates into his recordings to this day. The spiritually inspired man went on to get a master’s degree in theology and a doctorate in ministry. He continued to explore his passion for music by serving as the music director of a large church in Charleston, South Carolina while teaching voice and music theory. After twenty-five years, Keiter reconnected with Rob Whitlock at a funeral for one of the members of their teenage band. The reunion of friends led to the creation of The Glory of Love, Keiter’s first serious jazz release, which appears on The Whitlock’s San Diego-based Sketchin Records label. Keiter is proud that his daughter, Rachel, a student at Berklee College of Music, contributed background vocals to the project. And yes, in the end, the guy gets the girl. Keiter recently relocated to Oklahoma City to be with his new found love.

Keiter’s The Glory of Love contains the following songs:

“This Nearly Was Mine” “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life”
“Looking For Another Pure Love” “Get Happy”
“Laughter in the Rain” “Our Loving Eyes”
“The Glory of Love” “Grateful For A Pleasant Trip”
“Alfie” “What The World Needs Now”
“For No One” “You Are My Heaven”

Take 6 - "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" Heads Up Release October 5, 2010

It might be the parties. Or maybe it’s the roasting of chestnuts. Or the caroling out in the snow. Whatever the reason, most people consider the holiday season to be the most wonderful time of the year. That’s certainly the case among the members of Take 6, the a cappella group that has been mixing elements of jazz, gospel, R&B and vintage doo-wop for nearly 25 years. Winners of 10 GRAMMY® Awards, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Awards, the group has made an indelible musical and cultural mark in the past quarter century – whatever the season.

Every member of this brilliant vocal team – Claude McKnight III, Mark Kibble, Joel Kibble, David Thomas, Dr. Cedric Dent and Alvin Chea – has held onto fond childhood memories of the holidays and made them a part of their adult lives. The timeless magic is very much a part of the their new holiday CD, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, a collection of seasonal favorites that are as heartwarming as a crackling fire and a festooned evergreen.

The primary objective in the making of the album was to create a sense of familiarity, says McKnight, who founded Take 6 in the ‘80s with some classmates from Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. “We wanted all the songs on this album to be the kind that people would hear and say, ‘Oh, yeah, I sing that at Christmas time,’” he says. “We each picked songs that we sing with our families every year at the holidays… We just wanted to make a record that would, for most people, just put out a really cool, all-around Christmas vibe.”

Mark Kibble, who arranged six of the album’s ten tracks, focused on keeping things simple, yet incorporating some of the harmonic spin that has become the Take 6 trademark. “The basic idea was to just let the Christmas melody ring through, and present it in a way that’s interesting but still familiar,” he says. “You shouldn’t have to bend your ear too hard to enjoy a Christmas song. It should take you right back to those early Christmases when you were a child.”

In the end, says Kibble, accessibility was the overriding objective in crafting these holiday tracks. “We wanted to record songs that were simple enough so that anybody listening could follow the melodies and sing along,” he says, “and yet still be ourselves and give a little bit of the harmonic backdrop that Take 6 is known for.”

This holiday season, when there’s much mistloeing and hearts are glowing when loved ones are near, sit back with Take 6 and enjoy The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

Paul Brown - "Love You Found Me" Shanachie Release On 9/28/10

Tagged by critics as Babyface of smooth jazz, producer Paul Brown made superstars out of saxmen Boney James and Richard Elliot and gave guitarist Peter White a simmering irresistible groove. He performed with Al Jarreau, Boney James, Jeffery Osborne, Kirk Whalum, Larry Carlton, George Benson, Patti Austin, Marc Antoine and many more.

Paul's solo projects are Up Front (2004), followed by The City (2005) and White Sand (2007). He also did a fantastic collaboration with Marc Antoine on the album ForeignXchange (2009). Marc commented: “We put our hearts and souls into the music and feel very strongly that our fans are going to be as excited about these songs as we are.”

Paul's newest album is entitled Love You Found Me and is scheduled for release September 28th on Shanachie Entertainment. Paul invited a lot of great musicians to his new project like Jeff Carruthers, Dax Reynosa, Boney James, DeYon Dobson, Michael Ripoll and more. For further details about the musicians scroll down to the really big list.

The album starts with the bluesy Sugarfish. A relaxed finger snapping melody with a hooking aura Paul has co-written with Jeff Carruthers. Jeff already worked with Paul on his albums Up Front and White Sand.

Toast And Jam features famous sax player Jessy J and Dax Reynosa in a clapping club style. Paul Brown already recorded with Dax on Euge Groove's album Sunday Morning. Paul paints the melody in mellow accurate chords on guitar.

On Strollin' Paul takes a night walk on the George Benson avenue accompanied by companion Richard Elliot on sax. Euge Groove, who co-wrote this tune with Paul, plays keys, drums and bass. A remarkable detail.

The title song Love You Found Me showcases Paul in a spectacular role as singer. He did a great job on this ballade. Often stands the instrumental part of an album In The Shadows. Not on Paul's new album. He displays the hooking melody with steady tones.

It was really easy for Paul Brown to wrote Let Me Love You. He is married with the wonderful beauty Jacqui Brown, who was responsible for the vocal production on Love You Found Me and The One You Lean On. The last-named song shows Paul in a earthy and bluesy attitude. Peter White once commented: "When Paul and I work together, we resist the temptation to be too clever; we try to make music that moves you in your gut." This is exactly Paul's motif on this album.

On Right Back At Ya Paul seamlessly performs his electric guitar with Marc Antoine's acoustic guitar, which gives this song a special attraction, we already loved on ForeignXchange. Honestly, Paul is a real charmer and when he performs Midnight Kiss, women will melt.

Is Paul Brown the next Bob Dylan? On End Of The Day he strongly performs in that style. The final tune Shine Shoes features singer genius Al Jarreau. He hopes to start recording later this year and release by the summer of 2011. According to Billboard Al will use this song for his new album.

Love You Found Me uncovers a new facet of great guitarist and singer Paul Brown. His music is not political, social or philosophical, but he is an extraordinary composer. With that talent he shows a new entertaining direction, smooth jazz can go today's.
