Hancock, Jarreau Top 2008 Playboy Jazz Fest Lineup

Grammy winner Herbie Hancock is among the headliners slated for the 2008 Playboy Jazz Festival.

The festival lineup, which includes Al Jarreau, Tower of Power, Keb' Mo', the James Moody Quartet, Roy Hargrove Big Band and first-time Playboy performer Ryan Shaw, was announced yesterday afternoon at the Playboy Mansion. Celebrating its 30th year, the Playboy Jazz Festival will take place June 14-15 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Returning as host of the two-day event, comedian/actor Bill Cosby will perform once again with his group, the Cos of Good Music on Saturday (6/14).

Talking to Billboard.biz about his love affair with jazz, Cosby said, "When I heard it, it moved me. Then I wanted to hear it again and we've been friends ever since." He also applauded Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner's prescience. "Hugh knows and respects jazz. For that [Playboy] banner to be there 30 years ago is fantastic."

Cosby and other artists on hand for the press conference paid tribute as well to Hancock's surprising Grammy win for album of the year. Added 2008 festival performer Dee Dee Bridgewater, "Now maybe we'll all get more attention."

A full list of this year's performers can be found at playboyjazzfestival.com.

Bassist Marcus Miller also announced the lineup for the inaugural Playboy Jazz Cruise, for which he will serve as musical host. Setting sail Jan. 25-Feb. 1, 2009, the cruise will feature special guest Hancock along with such acts as Pancho Sanchez, Dianne Reeves and young jazz pianist Eldar.

Presented in association with Jazz Cruises LLC, the Playboy Jazz Cruise will travel to the ports of San Juan, Saint Barth's, Nevis and the private island of Half Moon Cay.

Jessy J - "Tequila Moon"

Set for release March 4th on Peak Records, ‘Tequila Moon’, brings Jessy J’s fresh and inspired energy with vibrant exotic twists to the contemporary jazz world.

Produced by smooth jazz icon Paul Brown, the album features performances by some of L.A.’s most renowned musicians: keyboardist Gregg Karukas, bassist Roberto Vally; and drummers Oscar Seaton, Dave Beyer and Sergio Gonzalez.

“Jazz Sensibilities…Stand Out” - Jazz Times Magazine

Title track & first single ‘Tequila Moon’:

From the moment Jessy J hit the stage in Fresno, California for the first time as a member of super producer/guitarist Paul Brown´s live band on Valentine´s Day 2006, the love between the 26-year-old saxophonist/vocalist and contemporary jazz fans has been flowing nonstop. The growing buzz led to her first major show at the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival later that year, and in 2007, as part of the event´s 20th anniversary, she became one of the only artists to ever headline shows on all three weekends. Now she is taking it to the next level, stepping out under the Tequila Moon on her multi-faceted, Brown-produced Peak Records debut that brings to the genre a fresh and inspired energy with vibrant exotic twists.

Jessy offers tastes of pop, jazz, Latin, and even Brazilian music on Tequila Moon, which in addition to her Peak label mate and producer Brown on acoustic guitar, features performances by some of L.A.´s most renowned musicians: keyboardists Gregg Karukas, Ricky Peterson and Kiki Ebsen; bassist Roberto Vally; and drummers Oscar Seaton, Dave Beyer and Sergio Gonzalez.

Tequila Moon opens with Jessy in full-on seduction mode, inviting the listener to enjoy a balmy, slightly breezy evening complete with her low toned tenor melody, laid back percussion, Brown´s gently jangling guitar and Karukas´ retro keyboard sounds. She keeps the smoky and soulful tenor vibe going over the cool grooves of the midtempo ballad "Spanish Nights," which features Brown´s hypnotic guitar harmonies and Richie Gajate Garcia´s enchanting Latin soundscapes. Next, Jessy takes us down to Rio, playing moodily over an old school samba groove amidst a dreamy, romantic atmosphere on "Sin Ti/Without You;" after Peterson´s high impact Fender Rhodes solo, the rhythms pick up and Jessy digs in for some of the collection´s most explosive improvisational blowing.

She puts down her sax and graces us with her powerful, sensual vocals on the familiar strains of Jorge Bem´s "Mas Que Nada," best known in the U.S. as the signature song of Sergio Mendes. Jessy intertwines flute and tenor with scorching rhythms and sweeping ambiences on the feisty and percussive jam tune that lives up to its name "Fiesta Velada" before chilling out and picking up the soprano sax for the first time on a heartfelt, lyrical reading of Phoebe Snow´s "Poetry Man." The melodically compelling, easy strutting Kiki Ebsen-penned song "Turquoise Street" allows Jessy to express her more in the pocket, contemporary soul and jazz chops, while the soaring ballad "PB n´ J" (cleverly referring to its composers, Brown and Jessy) offers a passionate, romantic dance between her sax, Brown´s guitar and Ebsen´s hypnotic piano touches. Focusing strictly on vocals, Jessy reaches back through the years for a gorgeous, lilting take on "Besame Mucho," and picks up her soprano again for the wistful and easy grooving (courtesy of drummer Chad Wright´s tasteful brushes and percussionist Nino Sanchez´ laid back exotica) "Running Away." Tequila Moon closes with an emotional rendition of Leon Russell´s beloved ballad "Song For You," which opens in a blues/soul vein before building dramatically and adding touches of sparse acoustic jazz and one of Jessy´s most memorable improvisational solos.

Lizz Wright Returns with 'The Orchard'

Listen to the interview at NPR and tracks by Lizz Wright by clicking here

The music of Lizz Wright offers a youthful yet seasoned mixture of jazz, folk, gospel, and R&B. The Georgia-based 28-year-old singer-songwriter is already a celebrated contributor to the jazz world, having recorded three albums.

Wright's first project, Salt, was a major jazz hit, and it didn't take long for its follow-up, Dreaming Wide Awake, to top the jazz charts following its release. After a year-long hiatus, Wright's new project, The Orchard, already has folks talking.

"I wasn't sure what I was going to come up with," Wright says. "I just really let myself be kind of wild and random."

Wright's eclectic style is part of what distinguishes her from her peers. But as a minister's daughter, she also attributes many of her sensibilities to years spent leading worshippers in song from the church piano.

"Music is still very much about communion for me," she says, "and just talking about what it is to be human."

Wright, whose musical influences include both Ike and Tina Turner, recently visited NPR studios for a performance and interview.

Gerald Veasley Ready To Make 'Your Move' An 'Emotional' Experience

Bassist Gerald Veasley returned to the studio to record his latest set, Your Move, the follow-up to the 2007 live recording Live At The Jazz Base. Veasley gets support on several album tracks with songwriting, production, and guitar by Chuck Loeb. The first single from the set is the up-tempo Loeb composition "Slip 'N Slide." Veasley says that he didn't really have a high concept for the theme of the new set, which shows off his four- and six-string bass playing in a number of styles. He explained that he just wanted it to be emotionally affecting: The only real theme was to kinda make the music have as much emotional content as possible, which is pretty much always an underlying purpose of all the music I put out. Didn't really think much about making a theme record like maybe I have in the past on some of my other records." Veasley is gearing up for the Berks Jazz Festival in Reading, Pennsylvania, where he'll be performing March 29th with the WJJZ All-Stars featuring Rick Braun, Bobby Lyle, Chuck Loeb, Chris Farr and the Berks Jazz Fest Horns. Veasley will also be part of the April 3rd Berks All-Star Jazz Jam featuring Rick Braun, Chuck Loeb, Richard Elliot, Nick Colionne, Brian Bromberg, Pat Martino, Joe McBride, Brian Simpson, Ricky Lawson, and Andrew Neu. The new CD Your Move will be released on March 11th. More information about Veasley is available at the bassist's website, geraldveasley.com.

Kenny G Debuts At #14 On Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart With 'Rhythm & Romance'

Kenny G, the biggest-selling instrumental musician of the modern era, debuted at #14 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart - his highest debut in five years - and #1 on the Contemporary Jazz Chart with Rhythm & Romance, his first album co-released by Starbucks Entertainment and Concord Records.

The album sold more than 31,000 units in its first week of release and is currently available in traditional retail outlets as well as Starbucks company-operated locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The stellar debut capped off a month of highlights for Kenny G: his new line of saxophones made its U.S. debut at NAMM, the trade association of the international music products; February 12, he performed at Rose Hall In Jazz at Lincoln Center, kicking off his 2008 world tour; CBS Sunday Morning will air a profile on Kenny February 17; his interview on Tavis Smiley aired February 8. Kenny also graced the cover of the February 16 issue of Billboard.

In a recent review, Billboard says "Focusing on one genre, and an ethnic one at that, works to G's advangate; backed by a stellar cast of musicians that includes bassist Nathan East and Weather Report drummer Alex Acuna (with Afanasieff on piano), he coaxes a richer and more muscular tone from his instrument." Rhythm & Romance is a unique combination of rich Samba, Salsa and Bossa Nova love songs anchored by Kenny's intoxicating and signature saxophone melodies. From the classic ballad "Sabor a Mi" to the romantic "Besame Mucho," Kenny has created an album unlike any other in his catalogue. On Rhythm & Romance, Kenny performs with some of the world's best Latin musicians including Alex Acuña of Weather Report (drums), Ramon Stagnaro (guitar), John Pena (bass), Michito Sanchez (percussion) Enrique Martinez (accordion), Nathan East (bass), Paulino Da Costa (percussion) and producer Walter Afanasieff (piano) to create a truly infectious rhythmic style. The album also features guest vocals by rising Chilean star Barbara Munoz and Spanish-speaking pop/rock sensation, Camila.

Sax Pack CD Due Next Month

The first CD by the saxophone super trio The Sax Pack is due next month. Fallin'For You by Sax Pack members Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters, and Steve Cole will be available March 19th on Shanachie. The new set will feature nine tunes by the threesome, including covers of the '60s hit "Tequila" featuring guitarist Jeff Golub, the Norman Connors tune "You Are My Starship," and the War classic "The World Is A Ghetto." The set also includes original tunes such as "Maceo," a tribute to funk saxophonist Maceo Parker. Kashiwa launched the popular Sax Pack tour in 2004, and says he was inspired to create the omnibus show by the concept of the star-studded Rat Pack shows featuring Frank Sinatra and pals back in the '60s. After sharing his love of those Vegas spectacles with guitarist Miles Gilderdale, the Acoustic Alchemy co-founder actually came up with the name. Kashiwa explained:"He looked at me with a big smile and he goes, 'That's it! The Sax Pack!'And he was joking, but I said, 'OK, thank you for that. I'm taking it.'So I trademarked the name and called Kim Waters and Steve Cole and sold them on the idea the next day. And off we went." Copies of Fallin' For You will also be available at stops on the 2008 Sax Pack tour, which has already lined up a few dates for the year. The trio is set to perform next on April 19th at the Seabreeze Festival in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.
