Jacqui Naylor Quartet - Live at Yoshi's- January 28, 2010
Jacqui Naylor show to benefit the San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium - Yoshi’s Oakland -Thursday, January 28th, 8 p.m. ($20) and 10 p.m. ($15)
Yoshi's Jazz Club
On the heels an often sold-out European and U.S. tour, vocalist and songwriter Jacqui Naylor returns to her native Bay Area for a concert of new music and requested favorites from her recordings. Half of the artist’s proceeds from this concert will benefit the San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium, where Naylor has lent her voice in support for more than a decade.
“Jacqui Naylor is an incomparable triple threat, serving up classic covers with the best of them, delivering top-drawer originals and inspiring with the musical marriage she calls acoustic smashing," wrote JazzTimes. “The words and melody are Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ but the groove is Allman’s ‘Whipping Post.’ Naylor has the chops and sensitivity to pull it off,” adds The New York Times. “Her whisky-tinged voice can bring to mind a mid-career Peggy Lee,” sounds the Seattle Times.
Naylor recently released her seventh recording, You Don’t Know Jacq (Ruby Star/Warner), and tours nationally and internationally, including acclaimed debuts this year at Ronnie Scotts in London, Blue Note in New York, Milan and Tokyo, and Women In Jazz Festival in Germany. The Wall Street Journal claims "The Color Five and Smashed For The Holidays mark a turning point in Naylor’s career.” Indeed, her holiday recording placed in the top 10 for the season in USA Today, Jazziz Magazine and The Washington Post.
Naylor’s current release has already garnered much fame, with “Rise Up” featured on the Obama/Biden Website and “Celebrate Early & Often” standard” by the media, including Martha Stewart Weddings. “Part jazz chanteuse and part folk-pop-leaning singer/songwriter, she enjoys nothing more than mixing things up. She could easily get by performing only her own material, but her covers and standards are so appealingly original in their execution that her albums wouldn't be the same without them,” writes All Music Guide.
“You Don’t Know Jacq showcases Naylor’s vocal ability and her talent for telling a story. No matter what musical context she puts herself in—jazz, pop or rock—she will turn it into a captivating narrative,” adds All About Jazz
Naylor’s show at Yoshi’s will include requests from her recordings as well as brand new originals and breathtaking standards. To hear songs, see video and make a song request, visit www.jacquinaylor.com.

Grammy® Winner Corinne Bailey Rae Launches New Album, The Sea, With Five National Television Appearances
GRAMMY winner Corinne Bailey Rae will kick off a series of five national television appearances with a performance on the “TODAY” show on Tuesday, January 26th, coinciding with the release of her latest album, The Sea. She’ll also appear on “Tavis Smiley” (January 27th), “Ellen” (January 28th) and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (January 29th). Bailey Rae will return to the States for a March 1st performance on “Late Show with David Letterman.”
“I’d Do It All Again,” the lead single from The Sea, will be available at all digital retailers beginning today. "Closer" will be impacting at Smooth Jazz radio on January 25th, at Urban AC on February 1st and AC radio in late February. A third album track, " Paris Nights and New York Mornings," will go to Triple A radio on February 15th.
NPR Music’s “Exclusive First Listen” series will give The Sea its U.S. premiere. From January 18 – 26, the album will be available for free, on-demand listening exclusively at www.npr.org/music. The entire series – which includes full albums in all genres – is available at www.npr.org/firstlisten. In addition, a performance and interview with Bailey Rae will be featured on NPR's “World Café” on Thursday, January 21st.
Fans who pre-order The Sea on the iTunes Music Store will receive the bonus track “Little Wing” and, exclusive to the pre-order, “It Be’s That Way Sometime.”
In December, Bailey Rae showcased songs from The Sea at sold-out concerts in Los Angeles and New York . She’ll be touring extensively in 2010, backed by many of the musicians who played on the new record, which she co-produced with Steve Brown, and Steve Chrisanthou, who produced many of the songs on her RIAA-certified Platinum, self-titled debut album.
Early U.K. reviews of The Sea have been stellar: “Although ‘The Sea’ has many hues it is dyed deep in pain,” said The Observer. “Now [it] is shaping up to be Bailey Rae’s own ‘Back To Black’, a rewarding hit built on pain.” The Sun declared it a “five star album that has already secured a place on the Best of 2010 lists” while the Evening Standard said: “Corinne Bailey Rae’s music has taken a great leap forward.” She has also drawn widespread acclaim for her recent shows. “Rae has undergone a tidal shift towards a raw, less manicured sound,” said The Times of one of her recent London performances. “‘Are You Here’ was a spiralling elegy in which she eschewed lyrical enunciation in favour of elemental anguish… ‘I’d Do It All Again’ swelled with Jeff Buckley-style vocal flutters, sometimes small and bruised, sometimes huge and searching. And ‘Love’s On Its Way’ was more powerful still as Rae… channelled a burst of turbulent mysticism that evoked Van Morrison circa ‘Astral Weeks.’”
Bailey Rae’s self-titled debut entered the U.K. album chart at #1 in June 2006 and she was the first British female singer-songwriter in decades to have her debut album enter The Billboard 200 in the Top 20. Within the year, she had won a Q award, a MOJO award, an Image award and two MOBO awards and appeared on a host of television shows, including “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Good Morning America” and “Ellen.”
She was nominated for three GRAMMY awards – “Record Of The Year” and “Song Of The Year” for her first single, “Put Your Records On,” and “Best New Artist.” Her remarkable performance on the 2007 GRAMMY Awards telecast propelled her album into the Top 5 of The Billboard 200. The following year, “Like A Star,” her second single, was nominated for “Song Of The Year” and Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters, on which Corinne sang the title track, won the GRAMMY for “Album Of The Year.”

Jessy J "True Love" - [Video]
True Love. With these two perfectly chosen words, Jessy J has, in unveiling the title of her second Peak Records release, captured the blazing emotions of her legions of fans across the U.S. and Latin America who made her the breakout genre star of 2008.
Produced by mega contemporary and urban jazz hit maker, musician/guitarist and label mate Paul Brown, (who also produced Tequila Moon), one of the most remarkable aspects of True Love is Jessy's ongoing commitment to her development as an artist and composer on her own terms. Backed on most tracks by Brown, keyboardist Gregg Karukas, bassist Roberto Vally, drummer Sergio Gonzalez and percussionist Richie Gajate Garcia, she puts her unique, multi-cultural stamp on a 10 track mix of vocals and instrumentals that draws from her rich Latin heritage and love for both traditional and contemporary jazz.
"After the success of Tequila Moon, it was inevitable that many fans would ask me, ok, so what's next? Where do you go from #1?" says Jessy. "But I never really worried about that pressure because I knew my approach would be to simply dig deeper into my essence as a person, songwriter and musician. My goal was to convey my True Love by putting 100 percent of my heart and soul into every note, every session and every song. As the journey of this new album unfolded, I discovered something amazing, a little secret I will now share: after all this romantic searching, I realize now that my True Love is actually my lifelong passion for music. It's a joy and an honor to have the opportunity to share more and more of this with the world as the years unfold."
The music was beautiful under the Tequila Moon. Stay there a while and like Jessy, you may just discover your True Love!

Soul Singer Teddy Pendergrass Dies In Pa. At 59
Teddy Pendergrass, who became R&B's reigning sex symbol in the 1970s and '80s with his forceful, masculine voice and passionate love ballads and later became an inspirational figure after suffering a devastating car accident that left him paralyzed, died Wednesday at age 59.
The singer's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father died at a hospital in suburban Philadelphia. The singer underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had "a difficult recovery," his son said.
"To all his fans who loved his music, thank you," his son said. "He will live on through his music."
Pendergrass suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the waist down in the 1982 car accident. He spent six months in a hospital but returned to recording the next year with the album "Love Language."
He briefly returned to the stage at the Live Aid concert in 1985, performing from his wheelchair.
Pendergrass later founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, an organization whose mission is to encourage and help people with spinal cord injuries achieve their maximum potential in education, employment, housing, productivity and independence, according to its Web site.
Pendergrass, who was born in Philadelphia on March 26, 1950, gained popularity first as a member of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.
In 1971, the group signed a record deal with the legendary writer/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. The group released its first single, "I Miss You," in 1972 and then released "If You Don't Know Me by Now," which was nominated for a Grammy Award.
Gamble remembered Pendergrass fondly and lauded him.
"I think Teddy Pendergrass was really one of a kind of an artist, and his music kind of speaks for him," Gamble said in an interview early Thursday. "He had such a powerful voice, and he had a great magnetism."
Pendergrass quit the group in 1975 and embarked on a solo career in 1976. It was his solo hits that brought him his greatest fame. With songs such as "Love T.K.O.," "Close the Door" and "I Don't Love You Anymore," he came to define a new era of black male singers with his powerful, aggressive vocals that spoke to virility, not vulnerability.
His lyrics were never coarse, as those of later male R&B stars would be, but they had a sensual nature that bordered on erotic without being explicit.
"Turn Off the Lights" was a tune that perhaps best represented the many moods of Pendergrass - tender and coaxing yet strong as the song reached its climax.
Pendergrass, the first black male singer to record five consecutive multi-platinum albums, made women swoon with each note, and his concerts were a testament to that adulation, with infamous stories of women throwing their underwear on stage for his affection.
But his career was derailed by the car accident, Gamble said.
"He had a tremendous career ahead of him, and the accident sort of got in the way of many of those plans," Gamble said.
However, Pendergrass' career did not end. He continued to sing and recorded several albums, receiving Grammy nominations; perhaps his best-known hit after his crash was the inspirational song "Life is a Song Worth Singing."
It was 19 years before Pendergrass resumed performing at his own concerts. He made his return on Memorial Day weekend in 2001, with two sold-out shows in Atlantic City, N.J.
Pendergrass is survived by his son, two daughters, his wife, his mother and nine grandchildren.

Alan Hewitt Releases "Retroactive" On Nugroove Records January 19, 2010
The CD artwork to Alan Hewitt's Retroactive looks like a reproduction from the old TV series, Miami Vice. Hewitt is dressed in a white suit with V-neck T-shirt, shades and shoulder-length blond hair. As a pianist and smooth jazz keyboardist, he travels on a flashback journey in both his attire and music.
Hewitt opens the recording with the title track from Shaft (1970), scored by the legendary Isaac Hayes. The pianist's rejuvenated arrangement rides parallel to the original Hayes score, except that his keyboard takes the place of Isaac's solo voice. It's a comfortable listen that brings back pleasant memories of a bygone era by encapsulating the zeitgeist. Hewitt's "All of You" utilizes a memorable melodic hook that's dangerously close to the 1970's Rolls Royce hit record "I'm Wishing On A Star," but he puts his own stamp on it —catchy and, after the first few notes, completely original. The title track is funky, followed by an arrangement of Sly Stone's "Hot Fun in the Summertime," with soulful vocalist Shea Chambers sweetening the pot.
Clearly Hewitt has the ability to cross musical genres, splicing smooth jazz with funk, and injecting strong R&B grooves. He maintains an easy balance between pop music, soul and jazz on "In The Works." A touch of Steve Madaio's soulful trumpet (revealed in the press sheet to be one of Stevie Wonder's prominent sidemen), adds a Straight-ahead flavor to the mix. Hewitt's "Amagine That" features the leader on piano, drums and vibes, winding and twisting the tempos like a masterful New York taxi driver.
Hewitt has worked as a writer, producer and pianist with some of the best in the music business including Tower of Power's Greg Adams, who makes a guest appearance on "Nassau Blue." Hewitt has worked extensively with Earth, Wind & Fire, Warrant, and Donny Osmond, and is a favored composer for the Oprah Winfrey Show, including Oprah's "Big Give." With his unique stamp of talent recorded on over 12 million sold records, and as a first call producer for major film and television productions, it's no wonder this CD is hypnotic, toe-tapping, nostalgic and definitely radio-friendly.
Track listing: Shaft; All For You; Retroactive; Nassau Blue; Hot Fun In The Summertime; In The Works; Saturday Afternoon; Amagine That; Big Bang; H2O.
Personnel: Alan Hewitt: piano, keyboards, drums, vibes, B-3 organ, Jervonny Collier: bass; Brian Price: guitars; Chad Wright: drums; Gerald Spikes: tenor sax; Greg Adams: trumpet; Ian Martin: bass; Andrew Dorsett: additional keyboards; Shea Chambers: vocals; Steve Madaio: trumpet; Wendell Kelly: trombon; Paul Jackson Jr: guitar; Steve Oliver: guitar; Will Donato: tenor sax, flute; Steve Clark: trombone.
