U.S. Postal Service to unveil 'Jazz' stamp at Contemporary Arts Center
The U.S. Postal Service will unveil a new 'Jazz' stamp in New Orleans on Saturday at the Contemporary Arts Center.
At 11 a.m. a ceremony will be held at the CAC (at 900 Camp St.) to unveil the stamp. The event is open to the public. A special concert by the CAC Jazz Orchestra takes place that night.
The new stamp doesn't honor a particular New Orleans musician, as past stamps in tribute to Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson and Jelly Roll Morton have done. Instead, the stamp recognizes the American art form that was born in the Crescent City.
The new stamp features graphics by California artist Paul Rogers, who will be present for the unveiling. Also participating will be Thurgood Marshall, Jr., vice chairman of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors, and Nancy Marinovic, president of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's board of directors.
The night of the unveiling, the CAC will host a re-creation of the CAC Jazz Orchestra that first performed in 1996, with all-new arrangements of classic songs. Germaine Bazzle, Ed Perkins and Nicholas Payton - on vocals, not trumpet - will front the re-creation of that illustrious ensemble. Tickets are $20 for CAC members and $25 for general admission.
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation is a co-sponsor of he stamp unveiling and the CAC Jazz Orchestra performance.

Larry Carlton "Plays The Sound of Philadelphia" allaboutjazz review #jazz
Regardless of context, guitarist Larry Carlton has built a reputation as one of the tastiest guitarists around, whether he's supporting singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell, jazz/pop hybrid Steely Dan or soulful jazz/funksters The Crusaders. His own records, while always accessible--at times, crossing the line into smooth jazz territory--demonstrate a distinctive blend of sweet and gritty tone, bluesy soulfulness, and plenty of jazz chops, often surfacing in the most unexpected places. Live in Tokyo With Special Guest Robben Ford (335 Records, 2009), was harder-hitting than usual, suggesting that though Carlton (and Ford) chooses easier-on-the-ears contexts, he never sacrifices the core qualities that make him worth scoping out.
Plays the Sound of Philadelphia is Carlton's homage to the songwriting team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, who were responsible for a seemingly endless string of soul/R&B hits in the 1960s and '70s. The songwriting/production duo, responsible for massive hits by artists including The O'Jays (”Backstabber”), Jerry Butler (”Only the Strong Survive”), Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (”If You Don't Know Me By Now”) and Joe Simon (”Drownin' in the Sea of Love”), built a sound that, ultimately, became directly associated with the town they called home.
Rather than taking these iconic songs and stretching them out for extended soloing, Carlton keeps them short--radio-friendly, and single-length, just as they were back in the day. A couple of background vocalists deliver familiar choruses throughout as a backdrop for Carlton's ever-perfect tonal and melodic choices, and Bill Labounty sings lead on a couple tunes, including the bright “Drowning in the Sea of Love” and anthemic “Only the Strong Survive,” these reverent arrangements never stretching far from their original sources. Six horns drives a five-piece rhythm section that includes, along with pianist/arranger Tony DeSare, Late Show with David Letterman stalwart, Paul Shaffer, on organ.
But, at the end of the day, with a collection of songs near-Jungian in their familiarity, and terrific charts from DeSare and trumpeter Steve Guttman, it's Carlton's visceral tone and ability to get to the heart of each song in an unfailingly personal way that make this 11-song set, at just under forty minutes, a thoroughly appealing look back, for those who miss the days when The Sound of Philadelphia ruled the airwaves. All the while, Carlton's broader harmonic knowledge bolsters his chordal work on “Could It Be I'm Falling in Love”--his warm, clean tone and octave-style playing clearly referencing Wes Montgomery--while at the end of the more up-tempo “Back Stabber,” Carlton combines bluesy bends with the barest hint of bebop sensibility.
And that's the beauty of Plays The Sound of Philadelphia, which also comes with a bonus “Making of” DVD. As much as this fits more in the adult contemporary category than jazz, Carlton peppers the session with plenty of markers that make clear his jazz roots remain an undercurrent beneath everything to which he sets his mind. It may not be edgy or forward-thinking, but it grooves to its sources with plenty of booty-shaking soul, all the while providing the ever-tasteful Carlton with plenty of room to deliver. And deliver he does, from start to finish.
Track Listing: CD: Could It Be Like Falling In Love; Back Stabbers; If You Don't Know Me By Now; Drownin' in the Sea of Love; I'll Be Around; You Make Me Feel Brand New; Bad Luck; Never Give You Up; Mama Can't Buy You Love; Only the Strong Survive; Might Love. DVD: The Making of The Sound of Philadelphia feature.
Personnel: Larry Carlton: guitar; Tony Desare: piano; Paul Shaffer: organ; Tommy Byrnes: rhythm guitar; Christopher Li'Nard Jackson: bass; Andrea Valentini: drums; Vic Stevens: percussion; Bill Labounty: vocals; Carla Benson: background vocals; Charlene Holloway: background vocals; Mark Douthit: saxophone; Darcy Hepner: baritone saxophone; Steve Guttman: first trumpet; Nick Marchione: trumpet; Dale Kirkland: trombone; Chris Komer: French horn.

Multi-Platinum Saxophonist Boney James Set To Release New Album #jazz
New album in stores March 29. Duet performers include Heather Headley, LeToya Luckett, Mario, and Donnell Jones. First Single Already #1 Most Added Song
Boney James, who has four Gold albums, three Grammy® nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit, releases his most personal album to date, Contact, on March 29, 2011. His first album for Verve Records, Contact boasts high-profile vocal guest appearances from Grammy®- and Tony®-Award winner Heather Headley; platinum-selling singer and former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett; and R&B superstars Mario, and Donnell Jones. His first single “Contact” is already No. 1 most added on the BDS Smooth Jazz, Mediabase Smooth AC, and Smoothjazz.com charts. The first Urban AC single “When I Had The Chance,” featuring LeToya Luckett, is going for adds next week.
Contact - completely produced, arranged and co-written by James - is driven by the signature soulful grooves the world has come to expect from him, but with an added intensity. “The title, in one sense, refers to me reaching across genres and creating music that I believe is relevant and fresh.”
The musician’s legion of fans have scooped up over 3 million copies of his twelve albums (with eight of them going to No. 1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart). And though notable music critics consider him one of the most influential jazz artists of his generation and Billboard Magazine named him “The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade,” James says, “I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.”
This incredibly accomplished artist - who broke into music in the mid-80s touring with acts such as The Isley Brothers, Morris Day (The Time), Randy Crawford and Teena Marie, and emerged as a solo force in 1992 with his breakthrough debut, Trust, has long been influenced by contemporary R&B.
James is currently in the midst of a whirlwind tour of concert and promotional appearances. In addition to his year-long tour, James performed the opening number on the recent NAACP Awards live broadcast on FOX along with Wayne Brady and Holly Robinson-Peete. James next travels to Atlanta to peform his single “When I Had The Chance” on The Mo’nique Show (airdate TBA) with LeToya Luckett. He returns to L.A. to perform March 22 on The George Lopez Show before criss-crossing the country for local TV and radio performances and appearances.
With Boney’s masterful new CD Contact, he refuses to accept any type of labeling. “I always try to make sure my records possess integrity. I make ‘Boney James’ music. I’m just trying to break down the barriers and make CONTACT.”

Jazz fusion keyboardist Patrick Bradley taps a luminous cast for the spiritually-inspired Under the Sun
The album offering hope and adventure will be released April 26th, a momentous day in the artist’s life
Talk about mixed emotions. That’s what jazz fusion artist Patrick Bradley will experience April 26th, when he celebrates his birthday by releasing his second album, Under the Sun. April 26th also marks the anniversary of his father’s passing. Bradley’s mother passed away eleven months to the day after his father. It was one heck of a year. But instead of sorrow, the keyboardist-songwriter turned to his faith when composing or co-writing eleven songs of hope, adventure and spiritual surrender for a record produced by seminal fusion keyboardist Jeff Lorber.
In addition to Bradley’s and Lorber’s high-level, tag team keyboard artistry, the musicianship on Under the Sun is equally stellar, thanks to the masterful performances of saxmen Dave Koz and Eric Marienthal, flugelhorn and trumpeter Rick Braun, guitarists Dwight Sills and Michael Thompson, bassists Alex Al and Nate Phillips, drummers Tony Moore and Dave Weckl, horn section work from David Mann, and the sultry voice of Irene B.
With the genesis of the collection coming from reading Ecclesiastes, Bradley harnessed a variety of influences and inspirations for Under the Sun, on which he played piano, keyboards, organ and Moog synthesizers. Bradley refers to the deep-pocketed “Straight Path,” the first track to be serviced to radio stations, as his “life verse” as it is about trusting the Lord for guidance. A lilting and joyous celebration of love with a cascading piano hook, “Into the Sunset” was written for his wife, Lisa. Koz and Irene B. add seductive elements to the R&B ballad “Just Let Go.” Bradley is a passionate road cyclist and he offers a taste of the adrenaline rush experienced while descending in a pack on “Slipstream,” which includes a lead-out from Braun’s horns. The unpredictability of life is the focus of “Time and Chance,” which delivers the message to live life to the fullest while being unafraid of taking chances. “Crows on the Lawn” swings. The poignant “Tears from the Sky” was written after his father’s passing and it’s an expansive, emotional piece both mournful and celebratory. “ Rush Street ” and the majestic “The Empress of Dalmatia” explode into aggressive progressive rock-jazz fusion jams ignited by Sills’ incendiary guitar pyrotechnics.
As for the album title, Bradley said, “The idea behind this record is to enjoy life and celebrate all it offers during the brief time we have under the sun. No matter what life dishes up, we should keep our dreams alive and pursue our passion, hopes and aspirations. The last few years have been challenging for all of us as we find ourselves in times of change and uncertainty. Seasons of change hit home for me personally when my parents passed away. I found myself in a period of reflection. These songs were written in times of joy, sorrow and triumph, yet with an eye on eternity. Life is speeding by. My hope is that we all will take the time to prioritize and tend to the important things and important people and relationships, and not just chase the mad pursuits of this life.”
A self-taught musician who started playing piano at age eight, Bradley’s musical endeavors have spanned jazz fusion, smooth jazz, gospel, rock, progressive rock, and classical. The Southern California native debuted in 2007 with Come Rain or Shine, an international seller that spawned the title track single, which peaked at #26 on the radio chart. Bradley is assembling a band to perform music from Under the Sun live in support of the album release. Outside of music, Bradley serves as a regional president of the Whole Foods Market southern pacific region. Further information is available at www.patrickbradley.net.
