With his new Thrasher Dream Trio, featuring Kenny Barron and Ron Carter, drummer Gerry Gibbs finds that dreams really can come true #jazz

Let’s face it, dream rarely come true. If someone says, “You’re a dream come true!” well, you have to question the likeliness of that at least a bit.

Just maybe, though, there’s a wee shred of truth in the Thrasher Dream Trio, the name of Gerry Gibbs’ latest band with Kenny Barron and Ron Carter. The fact is if you’re a jazz drummer, as Gibbs is, and you’re playing in a band with those guys, it could very well be a dream come true.

At the same time, it’s something of a dream come true for fans of great and pure jazz as well. Gibbs, Carter, and Barron are simply terrific together; they’re tight, focused and really sound like a band. While occasionally high profile projects like this one fail to live up to the possibilities, this one obviously doesn’t; it bristles with energy, color and imagination. The trio sounds familiar at the same time it sounds like it has the soul of a wanderer. It is comfortable and relaxed as well as cheeky and downright flawless.

Digging further into Gibbs’ dream work turns up lots of luscious moments. Johnny Mandel’s "The Shadow of Your Smile" is arranged in a fresh key, which adds some surprise and unexpected contours. Monk's "Epistrophy" kicks off the album with crisp, vibrant playing and a snazzy up tempo. Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" swings pretty hard without ever losing the loveliness of the melody. Herbie Hancock's "The Eye of the Hurricane” accelerates out of the gate and doesn’t slow down, a real tribute to Barron’s continued impressive dexterity.

Gibbs has been on the New York jazz scene for a while now, accompanying many great musicians, but always staying under the radar and underrated. "Thrasher Dream Trio" will change this notion. He wrote four of the songs here, and arranged everything with the exception of “Epistrophy.” Barron and Carter, the giant piano/bass team, certainly need no introduction, but a note must be made about their collaboration here. Their history working together is one of the intangibles that makes this project so interesting. Not only does each one’s individual elan show through Gibbs’ compositions, so their chemistry also becomes a major player.

Above all, Thrasher Dream Trio recorded at the acclaimed Systems II studio in Brooklyn with the able assistance of Joe Marciano, confirms that Gibbs can now begin to stand taller in jazz circles. More importantly, though, he can boast of the fact that one of his dreams, however unlikely, has indeed come true.

Theresa Grayson - "Live2Love" - Release on L2L Records November 5th #jazz

Saxophonist Theresa Grayson’s “Live2Love,” a compelling mix of pop gems from past to present and soul-jazz originals, will be released November 5th.

Theresa Grayson wears her passion for soulful pop music proudly. From Aretha FranklinHall & OatsSade and Tony! Toni! TonĂ©! to Bruno MarsMaroon 5 and John Legend, the saxophonist-flutist mines hits from decades past to present on her sophomore album, “Live2Love,” which will be released November 5th by L2L Records. The disc also showcases five soul-jazz originals, four of which were penned by Grayson including the first radio single, “Afterthoughts,” an urbane track featuring soprano sax, scat-like vocalization and live instrumentation typical of the set from producer Terence Fisher.

Grayson alternates between expressive tenor and soprano sax on “Live2Love” augmented by graceful flute flourishes. She wields soprano on the lush ‘70s retro themed “More Pressure.” The frenetic pace on “Locked Out of Heaven” gushes streams of flowing melody. Grayson presents “Sarah Smile” as a soulful tenor serenade and she surprises with soothing lead and backing vocals on “Smooth Operator.” “Tonight (Best You Ever Had)” soars upon a futuristic sonicscape giving flight to the saxtress’ impassioned calls. “Moves Like Jagger” prances feverishly with a sense of urgency established by a driving beat. The stately “Natural Woman” receives an anthem-like rendering. Lights dim for “Spend My Life” and “Close Your Eyes,” seductive urban adult contemporary grooves lit by Grayson’s sensual soprano and a vocal chorus. Desire permeates the ballad “Just A Little Time” while the longing continues on the classic slow jam “It Never Rains in Southern California,” which closes the collection.

“Leading my own band for several years, I have always had a set list that mixes feel good originals and cover songs with unique arrangements that get people up dancing and my goal with ‘Live2Love was to capture that spirit in the studio. I’m really happy with these arrangements of songs from multiple eras, and as a songwriter and arranger, I appreciate the chance to introduce my own material. The music is a reflection of my heart and the melodies I play are the steps of my own experiences. My desire is to touch a special place in the listener’s heart and create a warm feeling of peace and happiness. I want to leave the listener smiling, knowing that this was more than just a recording, that it was a life experience that I want to share with them,” said Grayson, who will preview the album at an October 26th concert date at Sugas Deep South Cuisine & Jazz Bar in Beaumont, Texas.

Having been reared in the church, the Tyler, Texas-born and Houston-raised Grayson debuted in 2010 with “It’s All About You,” an outing comprised of inspirational instrumentals. The fashionably coiffed and flashily wardrobed Grayson has strutted her high heels on concert stages with Peter WhiteMindi AbairMichael BoltonWill DowningMarion Meadows and Ronnie Laws as a sidewoman and an opener. She earned a pair of master’s degrees and is pursuing a doctorate in music education. Additional information is available at www.TheresaGrayson.com.
Grayson’s “Live2Love” contains the following songs:

“Tonight (Best You Ever Had)”
“Moves Like Jagger”

“Another Long Night Out” for Brian Culbertson #jazz

On the 20th anniversary of its release, the multi-instrumentalist hitmaker returns to his contemporary jazz roots to remake his debut album joined by many of the accomplished artists that inspired him.

Brian Culbertson was a 20-year-old student at DePaul University recording demos in his bedroom “studio” in a crowded apartment that he shared with three roommates above a costume shop on a busy Chicago street. Those demos not only landed the then trombone player in DePaul’s jazz ensemble a record deal, but they were released a year later - February 1994 - as part of his debut album, “Long Night Out,” on which Culbertson played most of the instruments himself. Twenty years later, he’s an award-winning recording artist, songwriter and producer who is currently in the studio revisiting that first collection of songs that will be released in February 2014 as “Another Long Night Out,” but this time he’ll be accompanied by many of the contemporary jazz artists who influenced him when making the original.

Culbertson’s recent releases have primarily been excursions aboard R&B and funk grooves thus “Another Long Night Out” marks a return to his roots in contemporary jazz. Among the preeminent musicians joining him in the recording studio to play on the 11-song album are the Rippington’s Russ Freeman, Eric Marienthal, Candy Dulfer, Toto’s Steve Lukather, Paul Jackson Jr., Fourplay’s Chuck Loeb and Nathan East, Jimmy Haslip and Will Kennedy of Yellowjackets fame, Ricky Lawson, Michael Thompson, Lenny Castro, Michael Bland, Patches Stewart and a 38-piece orchestra with additional legendary artists soon to be added. Culbertson is producing the record.

Another major change for the keyboardist-trombonist who has released his 13-album catalogue through major record labels is that Culbertson decided to go the independent fan-funded route in order to get his worldwide fan base intimately involved with the project. In recent years, he has been a leading figure in contemporary jazz when it comes to embracing technological innovation, social media and video blogs and is energized about the new music business, the creative freedoms it affords and the opportunities to interact directly with fans.

Said Culbertson, who discusses the new project and shares footage from some of the recording sessions in his latest video blog (www.YouTube.com/BrianCulbertsonMusic), “I’m excited about being able to make the album the way I’ve always wanted to make it. With the limited resources I had at the time, most of ‘Long Night Out’ was just me on drum machines, synth bass and sampled/synth piano trying to sound like real instruments. Now I’ve got some of the best contemporary jazz musicians on the planet playing those parts. This record is a true passion project and a return to my roots as a recording artist. I’m also enthused about opening up the recording process to fans via fan funding, which is almost like having them there in the studio with us. They’ll get to hear demo versions of songs and early mixes in almost real time. The entire recording process will be documented on my video blog. Plus we’ll be offering fans extraordinary experiences such as personalized videos and phone calls, private concerts, concert tickets, video blog shout outs or a thank you in the album’s liner notes, signed sheet music and CDs, a limited edition vinyl copy of ‘Another Long Night Out,’ an opportunity to hang with me at the mastering session followed by dinner or the chance to come to a rehearsal for my 2014 tour. I can even play on your record.”

A highly-popular headline concert performer, Culbertson is also the Founder and Artistic Director of Brian Culbertson’s Napa Valley Jazz Getaway, a five-day festival of wine and jazz in breathtaking Napa, California. The luminous lineup for the third edition of the Napa Valley Jazz Getaway, slated for June 11-15, 2014, will be revealed by the end of the month in conjunction with the release of tickets.

Pieces Of A Dream Stay "In The Moment" Release on Shanachie August 27th, 2013 #jazz

Celebrating 37th Anniversary,  20th Album & Thrilling Shanachie Entertainment Debut

Pieces of a Dream got its start in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - a city steeped in history, tradition and rich musical heritage.  Artists like John Coltrane, Stanley Clarke, Grover Washington, Jr., Gamble and Huff, Stan Getz, Jeff Lorber, Patti Labelle, Teddy Pendergrass, Jill Scott and The Roots are just a few of the amazingly talented musicians who hail from or have been nurtured by the "City of Brotherly Love." This vibrant city and its melting pot of art, music and history helped shape the musical style of the young musicians who would become the talented contemporary jazz band Pieces of a Dream.  Just as the city embraces its past, it continues to evolve, and so has Pieces of a Dream as the group makes history of its own by marking two major milestones: their 37th year together as a group and the release of their 20th album entitled In The Moment, due out on August 27, 2013 on Shanachie Entertainment.

Founding members James Lloyd (keyboards) and Curtis Harmon (drums) both use words like "thankful," "blessed" and "grateful" to describe how they feel about their work and their fans, who have continued to make it all possible.  Curtis says, "I would describe In The Moment as a milestone for us.  Not many groups get to reach 37 years and 20 albums!  I feel very fortunate and blessed to be in the music industry this long and to have this kind of success."  James adds, "That's crazy isn't it?!  Twenty albums and the first one came out in 1981 when I was a senior in high school, 16 years old.  We were out on the road with Grover Washington, Jr. the following year and I basically grew up on the road with him.  We would open for him as Pieces and then play as part of his rhythm section." And Grover Washington, Jr. was indeed their guiding light, a mentor who took Pieces of a Dream under his wing as the first group he signed with his brand new production company. James and Curtis were the nucleus of the band, having played together as members of the Ada Lewis Middle School jazz ensemble along with former member bassist Cedric Napoleon.  Danny Harmon, Curtis' father and a jazz musician himself, became their manager and had the guys listening to the Modern Jazz Quartet, Ahmad Jamal and Oscar Peterson as they developed their unique sound, blending their jazz roots with R&B, soul and funk.  Pieces released three albums in quick succession, establishing its place in the world of smooth jazz with the CDs Pieces of a Dream (1981), We Are One (1982) and Imagine This (1983). Those albums include some of their biggest early hits, including "Warm Weather," "Mount Airy Groove" and "Fo Fi Fo."

In The Moment is the first new release for Pieces since the 2009 album Soul Intent and features eleven tracks, ten originals and a cover of the 1942 Harry Warren/Mack Gordon jazz standard "There Will Never Be Another You."  While Lloyd and Harmon have been with Pieces from the very start, the latest members of the band include Rohn Lawrence on guitar, Tony Watson, Jr. on saxophone and David Dyson on bass.  Each of the members contributed songs for the album as David, Rohn and Tony wrote or co-wrote several of the tunes including "For Real," "TTYL (I'm Driving)" and "Coming Home" respectively.
Ace producer Chris "Big Dog" Davis co-wrote and produced "TTYL (I'm Driving)" along with Rohn. James explains, "I wanted to make sure on this project that, for lack of a better word, the side musicians -- they're really not side guys, they're in the band, they're family, I wanted to be sure they had some writing and publishing on this project as well, in addition to just playing on it."  Curtis, who wrote three of the tracks adds, "I wanted to try to feature three different instruments on melodies, piano, sax and guitar, so that they could be showcased in our performances." In the Moment opens with the title track, an uplifting groove with an in-the-pocket Pieces of a Dream sound penned by Curtis Harmon.  As James puts it, "It's a mellow, riding vibe... one of the things that Pieces is known for."  Saxophonist Tony Watson Jr., graces the track with a sublime saxophone melody. Bassist David Dyson brings "For Real" to the table, featuring a beautiful lead from James on the piano and a laid-back sax turn from Tony, while David gets to stretch out on his grooving bass solo. About the upbeat tune "Steppers "D" Lite" James says, "My wife and I take Zumba and line dancing classes.  And there's this lady named Diane - Lady D, who put together a line dance to one of our songs, "Summer."  We were in class and she had the class show us the dance and I was so honored and flattered.  I decided to write "Steppers" as an homage to her.  Like 'OK, let me give you something else to use for class!'"

"Misty Eyed" takes Pieces fans on another journey altogether with a tune that features James on Motif keyboard offering a romantic and moody escape. The Metheny-esque synthesizer melody, strings and guitar pull at the heartstrings.  He shares, "This is a song I had written years ago and I had been saving it.  I didn't have a name for it.  My wife and I were talking about it and trying to come up with a name and I told her that every time I hear it I get misty eyed and she said, 'there's your name!'" In demand producer Chris "Big Dog" Davis teamed with guitarist Rohn Lawrence to write and produce the great cruising, upbeat vibe on "TTYL (I'm Driving)."  The funky guitar lead and synth grooves make you want to roll down the windows and enjoy a sunny, carefree kind of day.  Curtis wrote the next tune on the album for Pieces several years ago and asked Tony to add his touch by creating the melody on the saxophone.  "People Say" has got that 'easy like Sunday morning' laid back feel to it with sublime percussion touches from Curtis and perfect keyboard and guitar flourishes from James and Rohn.  Smooth and sophisticated, it'll surely be a fan favorite from the album. "New Jazz Swing" is a nod to the highly acclaimed New Jack Swing producer Teddy Riley as James admits he has a special affinity for that genre of music, having grown up listening to all the R&B bands of the '80s and early '90s including Riley's bands Guy and Blackstreet and artists like Keith Sweat and Bobby Brown.  James shares, "I like to fuse contemporary jazz with other forms... jazz with gospel, hip-hop, soul, R&B or dance.  I love the rawness of the sound on this one." On "Under the Influence (of Pieces)" a bright, positive vibe is counterbalanced with a touch of moodiness. James calls it "bright darkness," saying, "I love duality and contrast and mixing up different things and textures.  It'll be a real cool, fun song to play live as well."   Curtis admits he's always been a fan of Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and co-wrote "Never Let It End," with Rohn Lawrence. The song was penned with Babyface's production style in mind.  Rohn takes the lead on a bluesy, melancholy riff that surely makes you feel like you're longing for 'it' to last... Tony adds a beautiful saxophone solo to create an overall mood that matches the title of the song and offers a cool new dimension and edge to the Pieces repertoire. Tony and James teamed up to write "Coming Home," a track that came together at the very end of the recording process.  As James explains, "On a lot of songs we have full production - drums, bass, this, that and the other thing - how 'bout we go just minimalist on this one.  Just Rhodes and sax and that's it, almost a gospel-y duet kind of thing." The album closes with James on solo piano on the jazz standard "There Will Never Be Another You."  He was especially glad to include this one on the album saying, "We used to delve into straight ahead a bit on earlier albums, but we haven't had anything jazz-jazz in a while.  Oscar Peterson has always been one of my idols since I was a teenager. He was a great inspiration for that song and that version."

Celebrating 37 years making music is no small feat and both James and Curtis are looking forward to sharing the new material with their fans.  Curtis sums it up like this, "I think we made a good collage of music on In The Moment. The songs blend well together to make a CD that includes different flavors from David, Rohn and Tony's writing.  I think we're covering a lot of different flavors in this particular CD and a lot of people will be pleased."  James adds, "I hope our fans like the album.  For me personally, I'm always trying to push the boundaries of what's accepted as cool or playable.  I'm not one to say 'ok that worked, let's do that again,' but rather 'that worked well and let's do something else.'  It's a hard line to walk, staying true to what people expect of you but being true to yourself and your creativity."  With In The Moment, it's safe to say Pieces of a Dream continue to explore new territory yet remain aware of their amazing history and the core sound and style that have gotten the band this far.  Pieces fans will definitely enjoy this 'moment' and the ride.
