Kenny Burrell's 99th Recording

A return to Blue Note, as his 76th birthday approaches

On July 31, 2006, guitar legend Kenny Burrell celebrated his 75th birthday. This milestone occasion was further heightened as Burrell began to record his 99th album, at Yoshi's in Berkeley, Calif. On that night, as he concluded a five-day run at the club with his own trio plus very special guests Hubert Laws, Joey DeFrancesco and Herman Riley, Burrell invited the great Gerald Wilson Orchestra for two sublime sets.

The celebration continued into the next evening, when Burrell and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra performed together at Kuumbwa Jazz Center, another favorite jazz venue, in Santa Cruz, Calif. Highlights from these special performances have been distilled on his new album on Blue Note, "75th Birthday Bash Live."

Burrell is also an NEA Master, as well as a member of the faculty of UCLA.
