Tisdale’s Rebound Debuts at #1

Wayman Tisdale’s new album, Rebound, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums Chart!

This acts as even more proof that Rebound isn’t just the title of his album, it’s the state of his life and his career and his music. In the liner notes that accompany his eighth album, Tisdale gives thanks to his doctors, as well as the special devotion of associates, friends, and family during a troubled time, as his way of alluding to his bout with bone cancer.

“When life tries to get you down,” he says at the outset of the title track that opens the disc, “it’s the perfect time for a rebound.”

That is about the extent to which he references his physical challenges. Otherwise, the album moves with such an uplifting flow that the listener would have no reason to suspect that things were flowing any less smoothly for Tisdale.

“I was born to entertain,” he says. “I just love people and I feel like entertainment goes right in line with my personality. …It’s just what I’ve been called to do on this earth.”

If there’s one thing the NBA star-turned-musical giant learned from his former career, it’s that there’s no substitute for hard work. Emerging as one of the most consistent and admired players during his 12 years in the league, his towering frame, exceptional strength and relentless work ethic made him one of the game’s most dominating power forwards.

Tisdale still lives and breathes this work ethic as a musician. True to character, he is a trailblazer in the field of music with his unique use of the bass as a melodic lead instrument.

In addition to his solo career, Tisdale has played on albums by some of the most popular musicians in contemporary jazz, including David Sanborn, Brian Culbertson, Everette Harp and the jazz supergroup Maximum Grooves. His playing even garnered the attention of Jamie Foxx who in an issue of Rolling Stone chose Wayman to play bass in his “dream band.”

In 2002 he was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame with the Legacy Tribute Award. The NAACP also nominated him as “Outstanding Jazz Artist” for its 2004 Image Awards.
