Chart Notes With Gordon Murray

What's the new what?
By Gordon Murray
Eric Darius musters up all his strength and gets all the way to the top with “Goin’ All Out” (Blue Note/Capitol) (2-1). This marks the second consecutive No. 1 song for Capitol and the first time they’ve gone back-to-back on the Nielsen BDS chart, as Darius follows last week’s chart champ, Dave Koz, and his “Life In The Fast Lane.” Previously, Capitol had a No. 1 hit a year ago November with Jeff Golub’s “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I Got),” which featured Richard Elliot on saxophone.

Wayne Brady surges ahead with the week’s largest position jump with “Ordinary” (Peak/CMG), up eight spots, 25-17. Brady also edges out Paul Hardcastle’s “Marimba” (Trippin ‘N’ Rhythm) for this week’s Most Increased Plays honors, 66-65. The multi-format hit got as high as No. 16 at urban AC a couple of weeks ago, and hails from Brady’s initial album “A Long Time Coming,” which debuted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers albums chart in the October 4 issue.

For the first time in 44 weeks, Chuck Loeb’s “Window Of The Soul” (Heads Up) isn’t on the chart, as it finally fell victim to the recurrent rule (20 weeks on the chart and below No. 15). Don’t be too sad for Loeb though, as his former No. 1 record now holds the record for the most weeks on the Nielsen BDS chart. Jay Soto follows, at 41 weeks for “Slammin” (NuGroove), after which there is a three-way tie for third place with 40 weeks each. Without Loeb, the longevity leaders on the current chart are now Norman Brown’s “Pop’s Cool Groove” (Peak/CMG) and Marcus Miller featuring Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Free” (3 Deuces/CMG), each at 35 weeks.

This week’s chart is rounded out by three new entries: Paul Taylor “Streamline” (Peak/CMG) at No. 28, Mindi Abair “Out Of The Blue” (23/Peak/CMG) at No. 29 and Robin Thicke “Magic” (Star Trak/Interscope) at No. 30. While Taylor and Abair are smooth jazz format staples, Thicke is an R&B artist first. “Magic” is his second top 10 smash on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, topping out thus far at No. 6 in the Aug. 30, 2008 issue. Thicke currently stands at No. 9 on R&B/Hip-Hop, enjoying its eighth week in the top 10, and nineteenth week overall on that chart. Furthermore, “Magic” is also poised to break through with the dance club community via remixes from Moto Blanco.
