Numerous Smooth Jazz Artists Receive Grammy Nominations

The 51st Grammy Award Nominees were announced last night and there are an abundance of Smooth Jazz Artists who made the cut, such as Fourplay, Marcus Miller, Gerald Albright, Earl Klugh, Natalie Cole, Al Green and many others.

The entourage of Smooth Jazz names begins with the acclaimed contemporary jazz quartet, Fourplay, nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for their track Fortune Teller. Nominated in this same category is Marcus Miller for the track Blast!

The Best Pop Instrumental Album category is packed tight with Gerald Albright (Sax for Stax), Earl Klugh (The Spice of Life), Spyro Gyra (A Night Before Christmas) and Larry Carlton (Greatest Hits Rerecorded Volume One).

Natalie Cole’s latest release, Still Unforgettable, has been nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album while Wayne Brady’s version of A Change Is Gonna Come from his album, A Long Time Coming, has been nominated for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.

Al Green’s album, Lay It Down, received a nod for Best R&B Album as did Boyz II Men’s album, Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA. The two were also nominated for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals for Green’s track Stay With Me (By The Sea) which features John Legend and Boyz II Men’s track Ribbon In The Sky.

The Yellowjackets featuring Mike Stern were nominated for their groundbreaking release, Lifecycle, which lands in the category of Best Contemporary Jazz Album while Pat Metheny’s track Son Of Thirteen is nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.

To qualify for nominations recordings had to be released during the Eligibility Year which began on October 1st, 2007 and ended on September 30th, 2008.

The nomination announcement was turned into an hour-long televised special, “The Grammy Nominations Concert Live! — Countdown to Music’s Biggest Night” which aired last night on CBS. The winners will be announced during the live ceremony which is scheduled for February 8th, and will also air on CBS. Check local listings for details.
