Chart Notes With Gordon Murray

Anaysis, ear picks, birthday huzzahs and more
By Gordon Murray
Euge Groove's "Religify" (Narada Jazz/Capitol) hangs on at No. 1 for a second week (305 plays, +1) despite a near-home run hit by former champ Tim Bowman with "Sweet Sundays" (Trippin 'N' Rhythm) (302 plays, +17). This battle promises to head all the way to the bottom of the ninth inning next week as well!

Boney James turns a double play in only his second chart week with both Most Increased Plays and Airpower honors with his "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)" (Concord/CMG). James drives his song up 23-18 (+38, up 52%) on the detections chart and 11-8 (up 26%) on the audience side. "Stop…" previews James' album of love songs, "Send One Your Love," due in time for Valentine's Day shoppers (it drops Feb. 3).

Mindi Abair scores Most Added with "Out Of The Blue" (23/Peak/CMG). Even though the song dips 20-23 (-1) its adds at KSSJ/Sacramento and KYOT/Phoenix, which accounts for the distinction.

After an exciting week of new call-ups to the chart last week, this week features only one new entry. It's in the form of a return trip up from the minors at No. 30 (+2) from David Sanborn Featuring Derek Trucks, "Brother Ray" (Decca).

Recommended Listening: I'm a little early on this one but I can't resist … last July 12 Incognito debuted on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart with "Tales From The Beach" (Heads Up) at No. 5, and on my dad's birthday (happy 66, Dad!), January 27, "More Tales Remixed" arrives! My two favorite genres, jazz and dance, are united! Ten of the "Tales" album's tracks have been transformed, two twice, into a truly terrific collection of jazzy house jams. The downtempo "I Remember A Time," remixed by Francis Hylton, is being added on the smoothest of smooth jazz stations now while the Christian Prommer reworking of "Happy People" has been extended for promotion to dance clubs. This international, eclectic group of remixers -- Dimitri (From Paris) & DJ Meme (Brazil), Tortured Soul (Brooklyn's own), Ski Oakenfull (UK), Prommer (Germany), and more -- transforms a good contemporary jazz album into a great loungey dance album with that slick but warm laid-back, late-night feel. I know it's difficult to wait for January 27 (especially for Dad), but until then just imagine a roomful of sassy, smooth beats, and fine, funky grooves, and you'll be able to feel what this record sounds like already.
