Amazon Compiles List of 100 Greatest Debut Albums

Amazon’s editors have put together a definitive list of the 100 best-ever debut albums.

The list of 100 Greatest Debut Albums includes Herbie Hancock’s “Takin’ Off,” Sade’s “Diamond Life,” Norah Jones’ “Come Away With Me,” John Coltrane’s “Coltrane,” and Miles Davis’ “Birth Of The Cool.”

You can view the entire list, preview songs, and download albums by following this link, amazon.com.

According to Amazon they implemented a set of selection criteria in order to give the list some legitimate boundaries. In order to qualify for this list, a title must meet the following list of criteria.

The album must be the artist’s first full-length album widely commercially available in the United States (i.e. previously released mixtapes or projects only released exclusively abroad wouldn’t be grounds for disqualification).

A debut album by a solo artist who previously released music with a group could still make its way on the list. Likewise, debut albums from groups containing members who have recorded solo material also count.

Of course, Amazon’s editors exercise their judgment regarding quality and/or historical significance. If you disagree with their choices (there’s a chance some will), you can let Amazon know in the customer discussions at the bottom of the web page linked below.

Throughout 2009, Amazon will be creating definitive album lists for a variety of categories. You can view the List of 100 Greatest Debut Albums by following this link, amazon.com.
