John Mayer Soon To Be a Television Host

John Mayer is in the midst of a deal with CBS for a music-driven variety show.

CBS president Nina Tassler has told reporters that John Mayer’s planned variety show is definitely a go. Tassler confirmed that the show will be, “a music variety sketch show, and it’s being developed now. It was his idea; we didn’t reach out to him.”

Planned for later this season, the show will initially be presented as a special, with possibility of a full-series pickup.

Regarding the show, John recently told E!, “I want to return talent to television…I want a show that rewards true talent.”

Tassler says of the singer, “he is so multitalented, he has a great personality, really smart, loves television and is very funny and has a great sense of humor about himself.”

In November, he wrote on his blog, “I’m working on the next CD, which I’m sure you will immediately hate until you eventually love. I’m basing out of L.A. because I’m working on a side project that is extremely cool (I’ll tell you about it soon).”

Mayer’s last album, 2006’s “Continuum,” has sold 2.3 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Mayer previously made a cameo in a 2006 episode of the hit CBS drama “CSI.” In the past Mayer has done unannounced stand-up comedy sets while away from the stage and over the last year he has become a tabloid fixture thanks to his relationship with actress Jennifer Aniston.
