Kristina Train - "Split Milk" - Debut Album Release By Blue Note Records On October 20th

“I always had a feeling that music wouldn’t just be in my life,” declares singer Kristina Train. “It would be my life.”

Hearing Kristina Train for the first time is nothing less than a revelation: her sunny, easygoing demeanor and youthful good looks belie the heart-wrenching power of her voice. Train’s Blue Note debut, Spilt Milk, is urbane and soulful, lush in its arrangements but intimate in its emotions, built on a foundation of classic and deeply felt southern soul. The title track unfolds with an almost cinematic grandeur, its string-laden chorus swelling with widescreen melancholy. Balancing the sultry with the strong, Train excels on bittersweet breakup/makeup numbers like “Don’t Remember” and “It’s Over Now.” As the aphorism of the album title suggests, the album tells the story of an indomitable spirit. Train knows how, over the course of a song, to walk away from a relationship with tremendous style.

Spilt Milk was recorded in London with Jimmy Hogarth, the sought-after British producer whose recent credits include Duffy, Corinne Bailey Rae and James Blunt. Powerhouse songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and arranger Eg White – Grammy Awards Record of the Year nominee for Adele’s “Chasing Pavements” – co-wrote most of this material. Singer and pianist Ed Harcourt also co-wrote two, including the climactic “Far From the Country,” an especially poignant and personal conclusion to the disc, about the physical and emotional distances one must bridge to keep love alive

For inspiration, Train turns to Aretha Franklin – “There is not a song that Aretha has sung or will ever sing that doesn’t just melt me” – along with blues/R&B cult figures like former Stax star/Raelette Mable John and Bob Dylan-favorite Karen Dalton. Says Train, “I wanted my album to offer glimpses of my influences, not sound like my influences. Jimmy, Eg and I are of similar backgrounds, we appreciate the same music; we have similar tastes. The arrangements are just what we felt the songs needed, they give the songs flavor but don’t try to steal anybody else’s style. I hope the album is a nod to the music I love, while still being modern.”

The Sax Pack – Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters, Steve Cole – Back With Second CD

The smooth jazz group known as the Sax Pack, with the trio of saxophonists Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters and Steve Cole, today, September 29, releases its second CD, The Pack Is Back. The 10-song CD features the first single, “Can’t Help Myself,” as well as such original tunes as “Wanna Get Closer” and “This Time Around.” They also included as a bonus track a remixed version of “Fallin’ For You” by Davy D.

The Sax Pack debuted in March 2008 with its debut, self-titled CD. The song “Fallin’ For You” was a smooth jazz hit that year and went all the way to #1.

The band will be touring the U.S. to support the new CD, but fans will have to wait a few months as Kashiwa is touring with the Rippingtons. The Sax Pack has several shows planned in the U.K. this November, then will begin booking U.S. dates.

Kashiwa says you can get an idea a flavor of the Sax Pack concept at thesaxpack.com. “You’ll find some pictures and videos of the behind-the-scenes fun we have. That’s what I like to bring to the show. Personality and camaraderie are very important.”

Brian Setzer Recruits Visionary Arranger Frank Comstock

What does a modern-day big band leader do when they want to re-create the sounds of classic 1950s film noir music? For Brian Setzer, the answer was simply to go to the source, the legendary Frank Comstock, who wrote arrangements for Benny Carter, Stan Kenton, Les Brown, and Judy Garland, penned the theme songs for Rocky & Bullwinkle, Adam 12, and Dragnet, and recorded the cult classic 'Music From Outer Space'.

Comstock wrote the horn charts for nine of the twelve tracks on 'Songs From Lonely Avenue, ' (Surfdog/ Oct. 13), having also worked with Setzer on his last album 'Wolfgang's Big Night Out'. As Setzer saw it, only Comstock was capable of putting together these electrifying, sophisticated and yet emotionally raw horn charts, evoking the big-band scores of half a century ago in a language that would connect immediately with the contemporary listener.

"Frank is the only one left, " Setzer says of his collaborator. "He helped invent this sound and, at 87 years old, he's still got it."

Norah Jones To Release “The Fall” On Blue Note Records - November 17th

Multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Norah Jones will release The Fall, her fourth studio album on Blue Note Records on November 17, 2009. Jones wrote nearly all of the songs in the past two years since completing tours in support of her 2007 global chart-topping, U.S. double-platinum album Not Too Late.

Beloved by fans for her sultry vocals and jazz-informed, piano-driven pop songwriting, Jones has taken a new direction on The Fall, seeing it as a chance to experiment with different sounds and an opportunity to work with a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones also enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River's Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris.

"I knew I wanted to try some different things on this album, " Jones says. "I'd been playing with the same musicians for a long time. We're all still friendly and I hope we play together again, but it felt like a good time to work with new people and experiment with different sounds. As far as a producer, I wanted someone who could take me out of my comfort zone and find the right musicians to capture what I wanted to do with this collection of songs. I got in touch with Jacquire initially because he engineered one of my favorite records of all time, Tom Waits' Mule Variations. He was really eager to do it and we got along really well, which was important."

King helped Jones put together a new group of musicians to perform on the album, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer). Jones and King tailored the songs to the musicians' strengths. "I think the record sounds different due to the variety of musicians we used, " Jones says, "I knew I wanted to play with grooves more than I have on previous albums. Some of these new songs lent themselves to having driving rhythms underneath."

Another noticeable change on Jones' upcoming album is that she plays mostly guitar. "I actually write more on guitar than I do on piano, " she says. "It just felt more natural for me to play it on these songs."

Since coming on the scene in 2002, Jones' has sold a collective 36 million albums worldwide. Her three studio albums, 2002's eight-time Grammy Award-winning Come Away With Me, 2004's Feels Like Home, and 2007's Not Too Late have each topped the Billboard top 200 album charts in the U.S. and gone to No. 1 around the world. All three have been certified multi-platinum, while Come Away With Me has been certified diamond.

Since 2007, Jones has collaborated with a number of artists, including Herbie Hancock, Talib Kweli, Willie Nelson, Q-Tip, Irma Thomas, and Andy Samberg's comedy troupe The Lonely Island. She has also contributed to various soundtracks, including Ken Burns' The War, Ethan Hawke's The Hottest State, and Wong Kar-wai's My Blueberry Nights, as well as the Fats Domino tribute album Goin' Home. In 2007, Jones starred opposite Jude Law in My Blueberry Nights and made a cameo in this year's season finale of 30 Rock. Also this year, Jones was featured as a flagship artist on Apple's GarageBand, presenting a tutorial on how to perform her song "Thinking About You."

The track listing for The Fall is as follows:

1. Chasing Pirates (Norah Jones)
2. Even Though (Norah Jones/Jesse Harris)
3. Light As a Feather (Norah Jones/Ryan Adams)
4. Young Blood (Norah Jones/Mike Martin)
5. I Wouldn't Need You (Norah Jones)
6. Waiting (Norah Jones)
7. It's Gonna Be (Norah Jones)
8. You've Ruined Me (Norah Jones)
9. Back To Manhattan (Norah Jones)
10. Stuck (Norah Jones/Will Sheff)
11. December (Norah Jones)
12. Tell Yer Mama (Norah Jones/Jesse Harris/Richard Julian)
13. Man Of The Hour (Norah Jones)

PRESTIGE RECORDS RELEASES SIDE STEPS,

A 5-CD BOXED SET OF JOHN COLTRANE’S PRESTIGE RECORDINGS

AS A SIDEMAN TO A HOST OF JAZZ LUMINARIES

Over the past three years, Prestige Records has released boxed sets of Coltrane’s numerous sessions from the mid- to late ’50s, each spotlighting a specific dimension of his tenure with the label.

Fearless Leader – released in September 2006, in celebration of Coltrane’s 80th birthday – showcases his recordings as a bandleader. Interplay, released in September 2007, contains Coltrane’s early collaborative recordings with a variety of stellar musicians from the same era.

Side Steps is the third and final set in this series, scheduled for release on October 6, 2009. The 5-CD set captures Coltrane in a supporting role, as a sideman to leaders like Sonny Rollins, Gene Ammons, Red Garland, Tadd Dameron and others.

The collection of 43 tracks represents the entirety of Coltrane’s session work as a Prestige sideman, from mid-1956 to early 1958, with the exception of his work with Miles Davis (which is featured in The Miles Davis Quintet: Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions, released in 2006).

The beautiful Side Steps boxed set features:

Matt Marshak - Live This Sunday 9/27 On Jazz In The City at citysoundsradio.com

We're having a Family Funktion with
Matt Marshak this weekend
And what the heck is a Funktion anyway?

It's a tremendous new album, by Matt Marshak, that's loaded with plenty of foot tappin' grooves. Matt is one of the hardest working energetic young artists on the circuit today. His shows are always very high energy and definitely crowd pleasers.

Matt has had four prior cds; Preservation in 2001, This Time Around in 2004, Groovosphere in 2006 and On The Rocks in 2008. Groovosphere was tagged as the best cd of the year and On The Rocks had a Top 30 nationwide smooth jazz hit.

Matt is a very personable artist and, I know, has several stories to tell about the making of this album and the inspirations that are special to several of the tracks.

He will be live on Jazz In The City this Sunday Sept. 27th at 11:00am Pacific Daylight Time. Drop on over to the chat room at www.citysoundsradio.com and join in the fun. We've had a great turnout for the artist interviews........and who knows........you just might win one of the artist's cds.

Curtis Stigers - "Lost in Dreams" For Release On September 29th On Concord Records

For two decades, Curtis Stigers has demonstrated time and again that the lines between jazz, pop, soul, rock, blues and even country are not as clearly defined as they may seem. In a trajectory that began with pop/soul albums in the early ‘90s, the vocalist-saxophonist-songwriter has spent the past several years cementing his reputation as a formidable jazz singer - one who recognizes the value of the story within the song, and the countless ways in which that story can be told.

"One of the great joys of what I do is being able to hear past the common perceptions about songs - based on a well known original recording or a classic arrangement - and get right to the issue of whether it's a great song or not," Stigers explains. "In the end, it's a matter of answering some simple questions. Is it honest? Is it real? Is it emotional? If all those basic elements are there, it's amazing how easily some very disparate songs can fit together."

[WMP] Streaming Audio:
Cold
Jealous Guy

The answers to these simple questions are clearly in the affirmative on Lost in Dreams. Mixing his own material with a few well known standards - and then tossing in curve balls from sources as diverse as Rodgers and Hart, Annie Lennox and Roger Waters - Stigers creates a surprising whole that is clearly greater the sum of its parts. His brand of jazz includes generous doses of soul, pop, blues and a host of other shades too subtle and elusive to grasp, yet too clever and original to ignore.

"When I started talking about making this record," says Stigers, "a lot of people were telling me, ‘We love that you do these modern songs as jazz tunes, and we love the way you're really pushing the envelope in that regard, but it would be really great to hear you sing standards. So I decided I would just do it. And not only would I make an album of standards, but I'd do the most obvious, overdone standards. I'd do the ones I said I have hesitated to record because they've been done so many times, or the perfect version has been done already."

Predictable and safe? Hardly. One look at the songwriting credits on Lost in Dreams tells the tale. Alongside standards like "My Funny Valentine," "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" are jazz renditions of Annie Lennox's "Cold," Ron Sexsmith's "Reason for Our Love" and John Lennon's "Jealous Guy."

D.C.'s Annual Jazz Festival Dons New Name and Brand

Festivals DC, Ltd., which created and has presented an annual jazz festival in Washington, D.C. for the past five years, today announced the renaming and rebranding of the event as the DC Jazz Festival.

Since 2004, the event had been known as the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival. It is the fastest-growing jazz festival in the country, and the largest music festival in D.C., with more than 100 performances and programs in over 40 venues around the city. Festivals DC conceived the new name to better reflect the Festival's location, rapid growth, expanded ambition, national prominence and strong connection to D.C.'s rich jazz tradition.

"We determined that our name should convey the national and international impact of the nation's capital. And there is no better place to showcase and celebrate America's singular original art form than in Washington, D.C., " said Charles Fishman, the festival's founder and executive producer. He added, "Although the festival name will change, we will continue to honor the enduring legacy of D.C. native son, Duke Ellington."

Since its inception in 2005, the festival has steadily grown - from attendance of 30, 000 in its debut year to more than 100, 000 in 2009. Attendees reflect a broad demographic mix of all ages and backgrounds.

"Our name change signifies a broadening of our vision for Festivals DC, which includes development of year-round programs that provide enriching and entertaining educational programs and performances that reach out to the broadest possible demographic in the community, " added Fishman. "We present local, nationally and internationally renowned artists who reflect the vibrancy and diversity of our nation's capital."

Under the direction of Fishman, and nine-time Grammy Award-winner, Artistic Advisor Paquito D'Rivera, the Festival has presented such celebrated artists as Dave Brubeck, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Randy Weston, Dr. John, Mavis Staples, Poncho Sanchez, John Scofield, Eddie Palmieri, Harry Connick, Jr., the Marsalis family, and Dee Dee Bridgewater, among numerous others. Festival programs reach every quadrant of the city - from performances on the National Mall, at the Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, and the Lincoln Theatre to events at more than 30 jazz clubs, embassies, hotels, galleries, and restaurants.

Alexis Cole - "The Greatest Gift" - Set For Release October 13th.

A winner of the 2007 Jazzmobile competition and an award recipient at the Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, Alexis has been cited as "a rising star in the jazz world” by Hot House Magazine. Her vocal talents from her three previous albums have been featured on NBC’s NY Morning Show, and in reputable publications such as Jazz Times, Time Out NY, and Jazz Improv Magazine.

While possessing tremendous vocal abilities, Alexis is also an accomplished pianist, arranger, and composer; having obtained two degrees in Jazz voice and Jazz piano. Most recently, she’s also added the position of lead vocalist for the West Point Jazz Knights, the U.S. Army’s big band, to her diverse resume.

True to Alexis’ eclectic nature, the tracks on The Greatest Gift span genres, while staying within the realm of her Jazz roots. Selections include Jazz, Classical, Blues and Choral elements, to make up 14 classic yet innovative tracks. Alexis reinvents Christmas favorites “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and she contributes a heart-warming new song, “The Call,” to the lineup of Christmas standards.

Another interesting element to this release is that proceeds will benefit the World Bicycle Relief. The organization is dedicated to providing bicycles to individuals in developing countries around the world, to give access to transportation and promote independence, empowerment, and sustainability.

Tony Award-Winning Actress/Vocalist Melba Moore and Powerhouse R&B Crooner Phil Perry Join Forces To Create "The Gift of Love"

Highly Anticipated Recording Marks Moore’s Triumphant Return to R&B

In today’s R&B the art of romance and passion is easily lost. The interplay between great vocalists like Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald, Teena Marie and Rick James is seldom heard. These timeless vocalists’ ability to capture the human dynamic between two lovers created some of the greatest duo encounters in music. On September 29, 2009, Melba Moore and Phil Perry rekindle the fire of the great duets on the inspirational The Gift of Love. Moore, a Tony Award-winning actress and vocalist who has topped the R&B Charts, starred on Broadway, TV and film (most notably in the storied musicals Hair and Purlie) and who was recently the subject on an episode of TV One’s lauded documentary series Unsung and Perry, one of R&B’s great balladeers known for his velvety-smooth falsetto, and who has worked with everyone from Patti LaBelle and Anita Baker to Peabo Bryson and George Duke, bring to life an unforgettable set of originals and classics. The dynamic duo are joined by producers Chris ‘Big Dog’ Davis (George Clinton, Maysa, Najee) and Preston Glass (Earth, Wind & Fire, Natalie Cole and Kenny G) in association with co-producer David Nathan.

The Gift of Love features a sublime mix of inspirational compositions that Melba Moore hopes will connect with individuals on a deep level. “Singing is my ministry and my art. Music is what God allows me to do and the opportunity came now and it feels right! When I was asked to do this project and collaborate with Phil Perry I said ‘heck yeah!’ With Phil everything is there – power, a certain freshness, emotion, artistry and an incredible range!” The Gift of Love marks Melba’s first return to R&B since her 1990 recording Soul Exposed. The renaissance woman has been busy recording gospel albums, doing a one woman show (Sweet Songs: A Journey In One Life) and most recently stepping in as co-owner of a new Gospel club and restaurant in Harlem, Gospel Uptown. Melba confides “I think all the basic elements of this recording from the production down to the arrangements are at its best.

Explore “Bogotá By Bus” With Guitarist Jesse Cook

If Jesse Cook was an actor instead of a Juno award winning guitarist, he’d be considered a method actor, someone who immerses himself completely in the world of the characters he portrays to deliver authentic performances cloaked in realism. For his eighth album, The Rumba Foundation, which will be released September 29th by E1 Music, the Canadian headed to Colombia equipped with his acoustic guitar, a few song sketches and a wide open mind.

Originally Cook’s mission for The Rumba Foundation was to bring his muse - rumba flamenco music - back to rumba’s birthplace: Cuba. But then he got in touch with Latin Grammy winners Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, a traditional Vallenato group that makes their own instruments, and was invited to Colombia. The group members arrived in Bogotá after a long bus trip and an impromptu living room exchange took place. After feasting on a homemade meal, Cook was asked to play some of the songs he wanted to record with the troupe. From that moment on, a unique fusion of culture and sounds intermingled in the recording studio with Cook producing the Vallenato-meets-rumba flamenco amalgam. He also wrote or co-wrote a dozen compositions for the collection vividly colored and intricately textured with Colombian influences. Adding a dose of pure American pop to the World Music offering, Cook recorded the rhythmic hand-clapping street corner romp “Cecilia,” penned by Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel. The disc’s first single, “Bogotá By Bus,” is already making inroads at radio.

“Recording The Rumba Foundation was more challenging than I anticipated. Merging two cultures and finding points of intersection required a bit more work than I imagined, but I think the effort produced a record that is perhaps my best yet,” revealed Cook. “There’s no point in going all the way down there (Colombia) just to show them what to play. I could do that with session players in my studio at home (Toronto). Instead I wanted them to freely infuse their culture - including instruments, melodies and rhythms - and bring musical elements to the recording, some of which I had not even heard before.”

Days prior to its official release date, The Rumba Foundation will air in its entirety via syndication through Los Angeles radio station KTWV-FM The Wave on September 25th, the same night Cook will perform and sign CDs at a Los Angeles in-store appearance at Border’s (1360 Wilshire Boulevard). The following night, Cook will perform at The Wave’s star-studded concert held at the fabled Greek Theatre. Cook will then embark upon an extensive concert tour schedule starting October 1st in Seattle with dates that run into the New Year and will include an in-store appearance at Border’s in Sacramento (2339 Fair Oaks Boulevard) on October 9th.

Cook first fell in love with rumba flamenco while visiting his father in Arles in the South of France. As a teenager, he jammed with the Gypsy Kings on his father’s roof. Two recent Cook albums that went top 5 on the Billboard chart - Frontiers and Nomad - were influenced by voyages to Egypt and Spain much like The Rumba Foundation was shaped by the visit to Colombia. Frontiers camped out for 70 weeks on the Billboard New Age chart and went #1 in 2008 at the same time the album’s single, “Café Mocha,” went top 3 at smooth jazz radio, making Cook the first artist to achieve such a feat. Respected as a prodigious guitarist, Cook was named the silver medal winner in Acoustic Guitar magazine’s 2009 Player’s Choice Awards. A charismatic entertainer who has sold over one million albums worldwide, the ruggedly-handsome Cook has performed captivating concerts for sold-out crowds all over the map, which has spawned a truly global fan base. His Canadian platinum-selling Jesse Cook Live at the Metropolis DVD, recorded at the 2007 Montreal Jazz Festival, was recognized with a Juno nomination. Additional information is available at www.jessecook.com and www.kochrecords.com.

Steve Oliver Performing On USS Ronald Reagan Tiger Cruise

Smooth jazz guitarist and vocalist Steve Oliver has been offered a special performing engagement, one that he proudly accepted. Oliver was asked to perform on the famous Tiger Cruise on the USS Ronald Reagan Navy aircraft carrier. Oliver will be the only entertainment, performing for more than 7,000 people, including Navy officers, crew and their families. A tiger cruise is one where relatives and friends of crewmembers get a first-hand look at what goes on a Navy ship, and is held every year on the USS Ronald Reagan.

“This is an amazing accomplishment,” says Gisela Oliver, Steve’s wife and manager, who will join him on the cruise. “We will takes lots of pictures.” Steve and Oliver recently returned from a trip to Germany and England. “All the shows went well and we made more fans,” says Gisela.

Oliver released his first solo album, First View, in 1999, with the hit “West End.” His second album, Positive Energy, featured the Top 5 smooth jazz hit “High Noon,” while 3D featured the hits “Chips and Salsa” and “Oh Yeah” and Radiant offered “Tradewinds.” Steve’s latest project, a two-disc DVD/CD titled One Night Live, was filmed during a show in Modesto, Calif.

Poncho Sanchez - "Psychedelic Blues" Release On Concord Records, September 29th

If music were about pictures, percussionist Poncho Sanchez's music would best be described as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At any given show, on any given record, fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling.

All of these sounds and more come together in Psychedelic Blues, Sanchez's twenty-fourth recording on Concord Records. "The last couple records have gone a little heavy on the soul music, which has gone over really well in our live shows, but we wanted to do more of a straightahead Latin jazz record this time - something in the tradition of our earlier Concord records that we made back in the ‘80s."

With that strategy in mind, Sanchez enlisted guitarist Andrew Synowiec to change up the sound on a few tracks. Synowiec, a regular member of the L.A.-based Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band, landed the gig about five minutes into his audition. "He came through the door with just a guitar and an amplifier," says Sanchez. "No effects pedals or other gadgets. He plugged and started to play, and I said, ‘No more auditions. We're using this guy.'"

Along with Synowiec is the same lineup that has backed Sanchez on several records and countless live shows: keyboardist/arranger David Torres; saxophonist Javíer Vergara; trumpeter/flugelhornist Ron Blake; trombonist/arranger Francisco Torres; bassist/vocalist Tony Banda; timbalero George Ortiz; and percussionist/vocalist Joey De León. Even a couple alumni from earlier configurations of Sanchez's band - baritone saxophonist Scott Martin and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz - step back in to lend a hand on Psychedelic Blues. A few of these seasoned players go back more than 30 years with Sanchez, back to some of his earliest gigs as a local fixture in the Los Angeles club circuit.

Smooth Jazz And The Music Industry [City Sounds Radio]

Is the smooth jazz genre truly on it's way out?

You have probably read about or possibly even experienced, the removal of smooth jazz from an FM station in your area. It has been said there is no interest for this style of music and the buzz has been gloom and doom for the future of the genre. Is it really true or an attempt by the industry to restructure this music? And if there is no interest, why are the concerts and festivals sold out in cities all over the country?

These and many other questions will be answered by industry insider Adam Leibovitz, President and founder of ASL Music Media & Promotions. Adam is also the general manager and vice president of promotions for Innervision Records who houses such smooth jazz artists as Blake Aaron, Shaun LaBelle, Will Donato, Rupert Leighton, D-Lucca and Richard Hart.

In addition, he is one of the founders of the Groove Jazz Music Chart that took the place of the defunct Radio & Records Chart. This new chart is published in two formats; one for FM stations and the other for internet stations.

Adam will be live on Jazz In The City this Sunday Sept. 20th at 11:00am Pacific Daylight Time. If you've had those burning questions you wished you could get answered, then this will be the show for you!!
