David Sánchez - "Cultural Survival"

Cultural Survival is the newest album from critically-acclaimed and 4-time Grammy award winning saxophonist David Sánchez. With this, his 8th overall album and Concord Picante debut, Sánchez continues to fuse his fierce, straight ahead jazz sound with African, Afro-Cuban and Caribbean influences. The 8-song album also features a new direction for Sánchez as he debuts a piano-less quartet on all but three of the eight songs and the inclusion of guitar. For the choice of guitarist David recruited Lage Lund, the winner of the Thelonious Monk Guitar Competition in 2005.

Explaining Cultural Survival's intriguing title, Puerto Rican born Sánchez says, "It's generally about the human condition. It started one day when I was just checking out the radio to find out what's going on in the world. I love listening to NPR and especially "All Things Considered." But I'm often left wondering, ‘where is the world going?' You realize you're surrounded by a younger generation that seems a little unconscious, living in their own space, their own reality, and not being very conscientious about the world around them."

On "The Forgotten Ones," Sánchez was inspired to pay tribute to all those in turmoil and hardship from so many places around the world, from New Orleans to Haiti. While the deep, moody and urgent track, "Adoración" is "a little tribute to a person who is very important in my musical development and who I always have to acknowledge - Eddie Palmieri," said Sánchez.

The mammoth piece "La Leyenda del Cañaveral" is set to a poem written by David's sister, Margarita. The poem refers to the travels of African people who worked on sugar cane plantations throughout Africa and the Caribbean, and Sanchez describes the song as ‘a journey' set to the rich history and anecdotes of these people. In addition to the seven original compositions, Sánchez includes a cover of "Monk's Mood," simply because, as Sánchez puts it, "it has always been one of my favorite pieces."

Mindi Abair | "Stars"

Mindi Abair's Stars, her Peak Records debut, showcases her trademark hip and edgy instrumental sound and includes more original vocal tracks than ever before.

Over half a decade after Abair broke onto the smooth jazz scene with her hit debut It Just Happens That Way, she's still an A-lister for summer and winter tours, festivals and cruises, has her own syndicated radio show "Chill With Mindi Abair" and recently went international with her first concerts in Istanbul and Romania.

Fans across the country can't get enough of her jamming stage show or the way she textures those cool "da da" vocals with her blazing sax on the #1 airplay hits that established her, "Lucy's" and "True Blue." (Download the free song "On and On" and see for yourself.) Stars offers that vibe on the first instrumental single "Smile," but Peak is simultaneously promoting her powerful vocal title track to AC radio. While keeping her core fans excited as ever, this cool two-fisted marketing approach is aimed at establishing as a distinctive new voice in a new generation of singer-songwriters.

She's been working towards this breakthrough a long time, doing pop tours with Adam Sandler, Duran Duran, Josh Groban and even The Backstreet Boys on their famed Millennium tour back in 1999-2000. Before immersing herself in contemporary jazz and becoming one of its true icons, she was even shopping demos of pop songs, aiming for a deal as a singer-songwriter. With her new album, she no longer has to reach for the stars. She's got the best of both worlds.

Wayman Tisdale Is "Throwin' It Down" With New Grooves On 'Rebound'

Wayman Tisdale's eighth album 'Rebound' will be out on June 3 (Rendezvous Entertainment) and the album's first single "Throwin' It Down" is already a top 20 hit on the Smooth Jazz Charts. Capturing the celebratory mood of the album, "Throwin' It Down" announces that Tisdale is back in the game with an upbeat, jaunty tune that was co-written with Darren Rahn, producer of Wayman's #1 single "Ain't No Stopping Us Now."

Once predominantly recognized for his athletic abilities as an NBA great and Olympic gold medalist (1984 US Basketball Team), Tisdale's musical success has established his place as an all-star in the jazz world and attracted a team of accomplished musicians to join him on this album of joyful, laid back grooves. Special guest performances on 'Rebound' include country giant Toby Keith, keyboardist Brian Simpson, gospel legend Marvin Sapp and saxophonist Dave Koz.

Wayman Tisdale recently told The Oklahoman, "'Rebound' is a reflection of what has been going on. It has been one of those roads, a winding road that I have taken, and I thank god he has kept me and I am still here. I am encouraged by this CD, and the great musicians who have collaborated with me. This gives me the chance to show people I have made it, and you can make it too."

Jessy J | "Tequila Moon"

"Jessy´s cool tones, her hot saxophone licks and her lovely laid-back vocals and overall sensuality, TEQUILA MOON is one heck of a debut. I´m lovin´ it!" by Paula Edelstein

"Fresh and energetic, with great style; a charming voice puts Jessy J in a class by herself" Mike: JazzHQ

Watch Jessy J perform Tequila Moon live. Just click here!

Jessy J joins the ranks of such contemporary female saxophonists as Mindi Abair and Candi Dulfer with her debut release called TEQUILA MOON. Produced by the amazing Paul Brown, she couldn’t go wrong and as a result, this recording is definitely saying something! Paul and Jessy co-wrote several of the recording’s great songs including the title track, “Sin Ti,” and “Fiesta Velada.” While her saxophone playing is emphasized mostly throughout, it is her seductively, sweet voice that endears you to her musicality. On “Mas Que Nada” she takes a lighthearted romp through the lyrics before Greg Karukas solos behind the infectious rhythms of Sergio Gonzales and Richie Garcia. “Bese Me Mucho” offers yet another splendid opportunity for Jessy to display her vocal prowess. Here she lovingly expresses a lover’s wish in subdued hushed tones. Her voice is fresh and friendly…not overly produced and just right for lovers of smooth jazz. Paul Brown’s genius as a guitarist and producer are on the long list of what makes this CD respectable. But along with the versatility of the musicians, Jessy’s cool tones, her hot saxophone licks and her lovely laid-back vocals and overall sensuality, TEQUILA MOON is one heck of a debut. I’m lovin’ it! Keep up the great work Jessy! by Paula Edelstein

Concord Jazz Veteran Scott Hamilton - New CD in Stores Now

The new album from tenor sax legend and Concord Jazz veteran Scott Hamilton is available now (CD & Digital).

Released this week on Concord Jazz , Scott Hamilton & Friends - Across The Tracks consists of 9 tracks featuring some of the best musicians accompanying Hamilton including Grammy nominee Duke Robillard (guitar), Gene Ludwig (organ), Chuck Riggs (drums), and Doug James (baritone saxophone). Produced by Bob Porter, Across the Tracks was recorded, mixed, and mastered at the famed New Jersey studio of legendary jazz engineer Rudy Van Gelder.

Hamilton first began recording with Concord Jazz in 1977 when the then 22 year old burst onto the scene with his debut as a leader on Scott Hamilton Is a Good Wind Who Is Blowing Us No Ill (a title inspired by a line from an article penned by the eminent jazz critic Leonard Feather, who was paraphrasing the lyric to Billie Holiday's lament “Ill Wind" in praising the young saxophonist). Ever since his auspicious debut in 1977, Hamilton has continued to record new music for the Concord Jazz imprint, longer than any other Concord recording artist. All total, Hamilton has recorded over 60 albums for Concord as either a leader or co-leader and continues to be praised for his beautiful, warm tenor saxophone sound and effortlessly swinging style.

Yom Ha Shoah - Never Forget

It has been over 60 years since the Holocaust. To survivors, the Holocaust remains real and ever-present, but for some others, sixty years makes the Holocaust seem part of ancient history. Year-round we try to teach and inform others about the horrors of the Holocaust. We confront the questions of what happened? How did it happen? How could it happen? Could it happen again? We attempt to fight against ignorance with education and against disbelief with proof.

But there is one day in the year when we make a special effort to remember (Zachor). Upon this one day, we remember those that suffered, those that fought, and those that died. Six million Jews were murdered.
