Fourplay - "Let's Touch The Sky" Release On Heads Up, 10/25/10 #jazz

Sometimes you have to shake things up, push a little farther, reach a little higher – even when you’re a contemporary jazz foursome that’s been operating at the top of its collective game for two decades.

After twenty years and a dozen albums, in an industry that has undergone sweeping transformations in the past decade, Fourplay knows that the only thing that’s certain, in music or any other business, is change. The latest proof of that axiom is the new face in their lineup – that of guitarist Chuck Loeb, who makes his compelling debut with the quartet on Let’s Touch The Sky, the band’s new recording on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group.

Loeb completes the four-man crew that also includes the band’s founding members: keyboardist Bob James, bassist/vocalist Nathan East and drummer/percussionist Harvey Mason. Let’s Touch The Sky also includes stirring performances by guest vocalists Anita Baker and Ruben Studdard.

The infusion of new blood into the Fourplay lineup creates an opportunity to bring an even newer level of energy and inspiration into a band that is already known for taking chances and pushing the limits of contemporary jazz. “All four of us have been in this business long enough to know that there’s always pressure to compromise, and we don’t want to do that,” says James. “We don’t want to end up in the middle of the pack. We always aim to be leaders, and take the music to another level and raise the standards higher. I think the music on this new record, thanks in large part to Chuck’s early contributions – and to the ongoing team spirit of the band as a whole – is very much a reflection of that philosophy.”

Loeb, who openly admits to being a fan of Fourplay since their earliest recordings, sees his new membership status as the opportunity of a lifetime. “I want to be a part of the legacy they’ve built, going all the way back to their first recording and right up to their most recent one,” he says. “There’s been an incredible level of quality in the musicianship, the writing, the whole sonic palette that they’re famous for. I’m excited to be a part of the next step in the evolution of all that.”

Guest vocalists Ruben Studdard and Anita Baker appear on the soulful “Love TKO” and the dreamlike “You’re My Thrill,” respectively. Studdard was recruited by East, after the two had appeared together in a live performance in Washington, DC. “They were filming a television special,” East recalls. “There was a break to reload the cameras, and I just started playing the bass line of ‘Love TKO.’ Ruben stepped up to the microphone to sing, and everyone in the room just stopped. I knew right then that we needed to have him sing this song on a Fourplay record, and when we asked him, he was very much up for it. The whole thing just came together so easily.”

Mason, who has held down the groove for Fourplay since the very beginning, says time has done nothing to dull the edge. The band continues to explore new ways to reach for the next level of musicianship and creativity. “Let’s Touch The Sky is the perfect title for where we are right now,” he says. “In some ways, bringing someone new into the fold has made us a new band. It opens up new opportunities and new potential, and we want to see how high we can take it.”

"The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" Take 6 - Heads Up International #jazz AAJ Review

A recording act that's been around a while eventually presents a holiday album. Take 6, the a cappella jazz group whose roots lie on the campus of Oakwood College in Huntsville, Ala., brings The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

Claude V. McKnight III formed a group known as Gentlemen's Estate Quartet, which was later joined by Mark Kibble. After a few lineup and name changes, the group became Take 6 in 1987. The group has earned several Grammy awards and has collaborated with a number of other artists, including the Yellowjackets, Stevie Wonder and Don Henley.

“It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” has a delightful, swinging groove. Using a combination of finger snaps and wordless vocals, the group sounds like a band more than an a cappella ensemble. The vocal harmony is superb.

McKnight and Chea run point on “You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” injecting a conversational dialogue to introduce the piece. Chea's bass lead does honor to the original recording by Thurl Ravenscroft, while Chea rolls his R's with emphasis. The background vocals responds to the lead, adding a humorous element, particularly on the “stink, stank, stunk” phrase.

The finger-snapping “The Sugarplum Dance” is a clever take on the Tchaikovsky classic, the wordless chant retaining the song's mystique. Although the voices engage mostly in doo-wop style, there are phrases where one member takes on the role of a muted trumpet.

Take 6 keeps the melodies simple, so that these Christmas favorites are easily recognizable and revered. But the group also puts its personal stamp on each song. For those wanting something other than typical Christmas album fare, “Mr. Grinch” and “I Saw Three Ships” help set this collection apart from others.

Track Listing: It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year; White Christmas; Grinch Introduction / The Grinch / You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch; Sleigh Ride; I'll Be Home for Christmas; It Came Upon a Midnight Clear; The Sugarplum Dance (Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy); I Saw Three Ships; Jingle Bells; Christmas Time Is Here.

Personnel: Claude V. McKnight III: vocals; Mark Kibble: vocals; Joel Kibble: vocals; David Thomas: vocals; Cedric Dent: vocals; Alvin Chea: vocals; Shelea Frazier: piano (10), vocal (10).

Jazz legend Brubeck undergoes pacemaker surgery - #jazz

Pianist, 89, is expected to resume touring in November
A spokesman for Dave Brubeck says the jazz pianist is recovering after surgery at a Connecticut hospital to install a pacemaker.

Russell Gloyd, Brubeck's producer and conductor, says Brubeck's doctors expect him to be ready to resume his concert touring schedule in November.

A spokesman for Brubeck's alma mater, University of the Pacific, told The Hour newspaper of Norwalk that the 89-year-old Brubeck had the pacemaker surgery Monday after experiencing fatigue and dizziness at his home in Wilton, Conn.

Bridgeport Hospital spokesman John Cappiello said Brubeck was in fair condition early Thursday, but that medical privacy laws prevented him from disclosing more information.

Brubeck's next concert is scheduled for Nov. 19 in Worcester, Mass.

Solomon Burke dies at Amsterdam airport at 70

Soul singer Solomon Burke, who wrote "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" and recorded the hit "Cry To Me" used in the movie "Dirty Dancing," has died at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. He was 70.

Airport police spokesman Robert van Kapel confirmed the death of the "King of Rock and Soul" on Sunday, and referred further questions to his management.

Dutch national broadcaster NOS said Burke died on a plane early Sunday after arriving on a flight from Los Angles. The cause of death was not immediately clear.

Burke, who was both a Grammy winner and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had been due to perform at a well-known club in Amsterdam on Tuesday.

A Philadelphia native highly acclaimed by music critics, fellow musicians, and many loyal fans, Burke never reached the same level of fame as soul performers like James Brown or Marvin Gaye.

He wrote "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" in 1964 and it was quickly recorded by the Rolling Stones and Wilson Pickett, and later and perhaps most famously by the Blues Brothers.

Legendary Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler once called Burke, "the best soul singer of all time."

Burke joined Atlantic in 1960 and went on to record a string of hits in a decade with the label.

According to his website, Burke was born March 21, 1940, "to the sounds of horns and bass drums" at the United Praying Band The House of God for All People in West Philly.

"From day one, literally God and gospel were the driving forces behind the man and his music," his website said.

Burke was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and won a Grammy a year later.

Those honors sparked a renewed interest in the singer and he toured extensively around the world in recent years.

Burke and his band would play without set lists, instead performing whatever the audience wanted to hear.

"It's like turning back the hands of time instantly," he said on his website. "We can be in the middle of singing something from my recent 'Like A Fire' album, and they'll call out 'Stupidity' from 1957 and we're back 50 years!"

Burke combined his singing with the role of preacher and patriarch of a huge family of 21 children, 90 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

"Loving people," he said at a recent performance in London, "is what I do."

Jazz Musician Koz Says "Hello" To New Sound On Concord October 12 - #jazz

On his new album, "Hello Tomorrow," jazz musician Dave Koz takes a few giant steps outside his comfort zone.

After 20 years with Capitol, the Los Angeles native will make his Concord Jazz debut when "Hello Tomorrow" is released Tuesday (October 12). The album marks a number of firsts for Koz. One, the saxophonist sings on the set, covering Herb Alpert's 1968 No. 1 "This Guy's in Love With You." Two, Koz recorded the entire album live, with musicians including such marquee session players as Greg Phillinganes and Paul Jackson Jr. And three, it's the first time the saxophonist has worked with several artists, including Lee Ritenour, Keb' Mo', Boney James and Marcus Miller.

"Why make another Dave Koz record? Plenty are out there," Koz says. "This was about embracing a lot of my fears and creating something fresh -- a whole lot of new that coincided with the unprecedented waves of changes people are riding now. There's no solid ground; rules are being rewritten every day."

The rules were certainly rewritten at Los Angeles' Henson Studios, where the alternately vibrant and calming "Hello Tomorrow" was recorded. According to John Burk, executive vice president of A&R and chief creative officer at Concord Music Group, who co-produced the album with Miller, the game plan was to "find a hybrid sound, to have his music evolve and really pop out."

"Not knocking his other records," Burk says, "but a lot of Dave's work was approached from a pop standpoint: programed and layered using samples and keyboards. We went for more of a live feel with live musicians interacting with and around Dave."

Koz says, "I was a complete sponge for that immediacy and excitement of making music together, for the incredible energy that comes from bouncing off each other creatively."

The project's theme of new beginnings revolves around what Koz calls the "tree trunk of the album," the Dana Glover composition "Start All Over Again." Glover sings lead and backing vocals on the song, which will be featured, along with Koz and Glover as guest characters, on the October 24 episode of "Desperate Housewives."

Koz, who came out to the Advocate magazine in 2004, views his cover of "This Guy's in Love With You" as "a new anthem for the times we're living in ... a calling card for marriage equality. It's a tender, simple message; delivering it in this way is appropriate. But I'm not kidding myself. I'm no Pavarotti."

Alpert himself plays trumpet on the track, while Ritenour handles lead guitars on carefree first single "Put the Top Down." Other album guests include Koz's recent touring mates Sheila E. and Jonathan Butler, Jeff Lorber, Christian Scott and Brian Culbertson.

Butler, Culbertson and fellow sax player Candy Dulfer will join Koz on his 13th annual Smooth Jazz Christmas tour, which kicks off November 26.

Koz, who moonlights as a winemaker, is introducing three varietals from Koz Wines this fall, named after three songs on the album: Getaway Chardonnay, Put the Top Down Sauvignon and Anything's Possible Cabernet. All proceeds from the wines' sales support the Starlight Children's Foundation, which helps seriously ill children

Paul Brown - 'Love You Found Me' - In Stores From Shanachie #jazz

Smooth Jazz legend, producer, artist, sound engineer and double Grammy winner Paul Brown released his newest album on September 28th via Shanachie Entertainment. Already, this eagerly anticipated album is being anointed by his loyal fans, radio personalities, and industry icons as his best yet.

With something for every cool musical taste, you'll find a delectable variety of laid-back, contemplative to up-tempo charts, perfectly seasoned by Brown's inimitable R&B style.

"This CD is a real reflection of my musical influences. Folk, rock, blues and jazz all mixed together, " Brown reflected, on the album's release date.

The album opener, "Sugar Fish, " eases the listener into Brown-ville with the help of Jessy J's flute and Greg Adams' flugelhorn. Further in, don't miss Brown's unaffected reunion with Marc Antoine in "Right Back At Ya, " that continues their magical spell created on the 2009 hit album, Foreign Exchange.

The namesake track uses Brown's own vocals, as a "love story" tribute to his wife, Jacqui, celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. According to Brown, it became a family affair as she decided to venture, for the first time, into producing her husband's vocals.

Brown reflected, "She's never really had much to do with my music before, so I think she had a huge effect on the performances." With Brown literally singing to the love of his life, who was right there in the studio, the track really captures his emotion, bottling it for us to replay over and over.

LA devotee Tom Brady enthused, while "Shakin" to the unmistakable groove of Brown's soulful Gibson L-5 electric guitar, "Multi-talented Paul Brown really delivers on this album. He's cut a tantalizing mood-setter to start the weekend 'chill' outdoors, or that drive home. Destined for a hit single, 'Toast and Jam' incorporates the sultry sax talent of Jessy J to create a perfect dance number."

"Offering lots of vocal variety throughout, " he continues, "the 'End of the Day' track evokes a Jackson Browne vibe, yet you'll hear definite Bruce Springsteen-like overtones in 'The One You Lean On.' Brown really infuses his cool, mellow sound with an upbeat energy throughout, his melodies, plus a hint of Southern love. 'Let Me Love You' is a must to add to your romantic collection. Now a personal favorite, 'Right Back At Ya' features Marc Antoine's sweet guitar accents juxtaposed with Paul Brown's characteristic driving rhythms. Get ready for a ride to the intersection of Romance and Groove Streets, where the lights are low and the mood is just right. Bravo!"

Music lovers will get one of the last chances to hear Paul Brown perform live with Marc Antoine in the U.S. on October 8, 2010 at Palm Desert's La Quinta Resort before he heads to England on a smooth jazz cruise. And ask for some of those new tunes. This one's a keeper ... 10/10. Love we found it!
