Coming of age on Chicago’s West Side, Nick Colionne began playing music professionally in rock bands at 15, and has performed with some of the legendary R&B icons of our time including Natalie Cole, Al Green, The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield and The Staples Singers.
Colionne has devoted much of his spare time over the past twelve years to mentoring children at a suburban Chicago K-8 school. As an extension of his work with children in Chicago, Colionne also offers an email-based newsletter from his website called Nick’s Notes for Kids.
In his most recent newsletter he highlighted questions that he is always asked during the tutorial clinics he offers.
“I’m Always Asked About… PRACTICING,” he wrote in the February edition of the notes, which are written exclusively for young people. “I am always asked in my clinics about how much or how do I practice. Yes, you should have a dedicated practice schedule.”
“The thing is to keep the guitar or whatever instrument in your hands as much as possible so that you and the instrument become one.”
Colionne also recently made the cover of JET Magazine when he and several other celebrities were interviewed in regards to the election and agenda of Barack Obama. Colionne was the only jazz instrumentalist included in the stellar group which included Aretha Franklin, Russell Simmons, Dick Gregory, soul singer Frankie Beverly, John Legend, Patti Austin and many others.
