On Wednesday, March 11, 2009, eight CDs on the nuGroove Records label made the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Sales Charts. Four of these nuGroove releases, made the Top Thirty on the chart (#4 Michael Lington - Heat; #5 Gail Jhonson - Pearls; #15 Bob Baldwin -NewUrbanJazz.com and #26 Shilts - Jigsaw Life).
Since its reemergence on the contemporary jazz scene under the direction of David Chackler in January 2007, nuGroove has progressively established itself as a haven for new, independent music. Determined to chart new waters, Chackler and label co-owner John Salstone have diligently brought on-board some of the brightest and most creative young talent in smooth soul, Brazilian and beyond.
Much of the success can be attributed to nuGroove's willingness to embrace out-of-the-box artistic and marketing concepts. When asked how they do it, you're likely to hear David or John simply say, “We let the music do the talking.”
The concept of letting the musicians take control of the creative process has created a healthy and burgeoning environment for new ideas. Some of their successes included Bob Baldwin's Top Ten Billboard hit NewUrbanJazz.com and the Top Ten radio success of Jay Sotos single Slammin'. Let's not forget to mention the resigning of Michael Lington (currently at #2 on the radio charts with Heat) and the many other nuGroove artists that can be heard internationally on air today.
Creating good music that appeals to the soul of the listener is truly what nuGroove is all about. While this may seem like a devilish publicity scheme, it's really not that unusual of a concept. After all, music belongs in the hands of the artist and the people who enjoy it. Anything else is just background noise.
