Dave Koz helps bring the frosty glow to Florida

Christmas in South Florida never means snow, unless you count a freak occurrence in Miami 30 years ago or the dusting of faux flakes on Las Olas Boulevard.

But a Santa-like stopover by saxophonist Dave Koz is usually on the calendar. Koz and friends bring the 10th edition of his "Smooth Jazz Christmas" tour to the Broward Center's Au-Rene Theater in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday. A revolving eight-piece ensemble led by Koz will perform his arrangements, vocal and instrumental, of seasonal favorites such as White Christmas and Silver Bells. Both appear on his new CD, Memories of a Winter's Night (Capitol).

Lacking the appropriate weather, South Florida has to work harder to conjure the spirit, so music is a help. . . .

Ayo | "Joyful"

"What's different is Ayo's voice. It's high, thin and light; I'm telling you it's like no one else's." -- The New York Times

"...Next to [Corinne Bailey] Rae, the raw touch Ayo brings to 'Down On My Knees' and 'Help Is Coming' make Joyful a rougher, tougher, ultimately happier experience." -- Word Magazine

Video: "Life Is Real"

Ayo, whose name translates to "joy" in Yoruba, is the daughter of a Nigerian father and a gypsy Romanian mother. Raised in Germany, Ayo's rich cultural background inspired her to listen to her father's diverse collection of Donnie Hathaway, Jimmy Cliff, Fela Kuti and Pink Floyd. After teaching herself to play guitar, her career took off when she secured a spot to open for Omar and improvised alongside Cody Chesnutt at the stage of the Elysée-Montmartre. The result of her travels between Paris and New York is her debut album Joyful, a collection of bittersweet songs filled with all her various experiences and the people she's encountered along the way.

On Joyful, she strives to naturally and sincerely share her stories and touch others, boosted solely by her life experience and dreams. "Down On My Knees" rests upon a cool reggae rhythm, a simple folk melody and elegant production with a voice that is 100% soul singing, crying out its love, nothing more. "If people interpret something else, hidden between the lines, by all means, they're free to do so," Ayo insinuates. Laced with Hispanic undertones and a hint of Caribbean spice, "And It's Supposed To Be Love" is Ayo's only cover taken from the repertoire of jazz singer Abbey Lincoln. Straightaway, "Help Is Coming" has a rhythmic style with elements of rock and reggae, belying its emotional nature as a ballad. For fans of any type of music, it is an immense joy to hear Ayo, but it is an absolute delight for followers of Corinne Bailey Rae, India.Arie and Angie Stone.

Botti In Motion

Jazz star’s skyrocketing success knows no bounds

A hundred concerts in five months with stops in China, Russia and Poland. Thirty-four shows in New York City. An appearance on “Larry King Live.”

Springsteen? McCartney?

Try Chris Botti, the jazz trumpeter-turned-superstar, who sets up in Scullers for four nearly sold-out nights starting tomorrow. Among the material he’ll cover: songs from his new CD, “Italia,” which features Andrea Bocelli and Paula Cole.

“I have no residence, no storage locker,” Botti said from a tour stop in Palm Springs. “I don’t live anywhere. I just tour. I have one suitcase, one carry-on and my trumpet. Those are all my possessions. I don’t own anything else.”

What the 45-year-old bachelor - who was romantically connected to news anchor Katie Couric - does possess is a golden touch.

No instrumental artist with jazz roots, Wynton Marsalis included, is hotter than Botti. You don’t get major play on Bocelli’s upcoming PBS special or booked for two-and-a-half weeks at Manhattan’s Blue Note club unless you’re in demand.

Known mostly as a smooth jazz musician for years, the Oregon native signed on with Sting’s band in 1999. He was catapulted to the big time when he and his jazz band toured the world as Sting’s opening act four years ago. That led to an appearance on “Oprah,” offers to work with symphony orchestras and pop giants such as Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Josh Groban and Chaka Khan, and sexy gigs like the Victoria’s Secret fashion show.

Not bad for a guy raised in Corvallis and who grew up idolizing Miles Davis.

“Because my success happened so much later in my life, and because I’ve worked with so many different kinds of people, when the times are tough I keep reminding myself to look at what we have the opportunity to do,” said Botti. “The daily travel is brutal. (I’m) up most days at five in the morning to get to the airport. Then I pinch myself about what I’m doing. That makes it worth it.

“Even though I’ve been out there duking it out, trying to make it, the actual success took a long time. I like to say that behind every overnight success are 10 years of Red Roof Inns.”

Botti has had a number of No. 1 albums on the smooth jazz charts, yet in recent years his clean-lined playing has won him acclaim across genres. The band he brings to Scullers - Mark Whitfield, James Genus, Billy Kilson and Peter Martin - has heavy jazz credentials.

“Today, smooth jazz means adult,” Botti said.“The hard-core smooth jazz artists are Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Sting, myself. And then you have the instrumentalists: George Benson, Kenny G, whomever.

“The smooth jazz connection has been a bit of a hurdle, but the term doesn’t bother me anymore. Quite frankly, most people think that Sade and Norah Jones are jazz musicians. Jazz? Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter are jazz musicians. I think Norah Jones has more to do with country than jazz. Is she great? Abolutely. That’s what people need to focus on.”

So Botti continues to mix it up. Earlier this week, he played a show in Texas with his jazz group, then shared the same stage with opera star Renee Fleming and the Dallas Opera Orchestra.

“It’s one of the great things that has happened to me in the back half of my career,” he said. “I get to do this for a living, which is what I dreamed about when I was 9 years old.”

Alicia Keys | "As I Am"

By now established as a major and talented force in the mainstream music world, Alicia Keys has perhaps earned the right to explore a little, to venture into new genres while still keeping a foot firmly planted in the R&B/neo-soul she grew out of. On her third full-length, As I Am, Keys takes a step closer toward the soul revival popularized by John Legend, with full-band arrangements and bright horn hooks, only occasionally falling back into the piano/melisma combination that drove the singles off her first two albums. Instead, here, as evidenced in "No One" — which sounds all too ready to take on a "reggae dance mix" — the guitar-driven "I Need You," "Wreckless Love," or "Where Do We Go from Here," which pays tribute to both Stax and Motown ("All I can do/Is follow the tracks of my tears," she sings, after a sample of Wendy Rene's "After Laughter [Comes Tears]" crackles through the first few bars), this is music that owes as much to pop as it does R&B, highlighted no less by the fact that the queen of radio rock herself, Linda Perry, co-writes three of the songs with Keys, including the straight-from-the-Stripped-sessions "The Thing About Love" and "Superwoman." It is on the latter, in fact, that Keys, unsurprisingly, turns furthest away from the style that brought her initial success (more so even than on the John Mayer collabo, "Lesson Learned," which is actually not bad) toward the generic-pop world, sliding in between corny and sincere, sometimes even in the same breath. "When I'm breaking down/And I can't be found/...'Cause no one knows/Me underneath these clothes/But I can fly/We can fly," she sings in the bridge, flatly. Keys has never been a brilliant lyricist, but she's always been able to write simple yet affective and honest words that don't seem trite, something that is forgotten here, and makes the track one of the weakest on the album. Fortunately, this doesn't happen too often, and as As I Am weaves its way through the drums and various keyboards and vocal harmonies that make up the backbone of her work here, punctuated by the great, hooky melodies and strings, you get the impression that this is in fact the sign of an artist who's not content to only follow the path that's brought her previous acclaim, an artist who's looking to find more, both about herself and her music, and an artist who carries these developments, these insights, with her. And so even though As I Am is a flawed work — a little too poppy, a little too clichéd — it is also indicative of what Keys can and will do, and that she is someone, thanks to her curiosity, intelligence, and natural talent, who will be able to mature and grow for years to come.
