Branford Marsalis Signs to Blue Note Records #jazz #music

Saxophonist Branford Marsalis, one of the foremost jazz artists of our time and a pacesetting creative force in the music for more than four decades, has signed to Blue Note Records, the legendary label and standard bearer of The Finest In Jazz Since 1939. Marsalis will release his Blue Note debut Belonging in Spring 2025, his first new album since 2019 with his longstanding quartet featuring Joey CalderazzoEric Revis, and Justin Faulkner. The BMQ will be touring extensively across the United States and Europe next year. Stay tuned to branfordmarsalis.com for tour updates.

“I am grateful to Blue Note for its steadfastness in preserving the music for generations,” says Marsalis. “I have listened to countless Blue Note albums over the years and look forward to making a contribution to this great library.”

“Over the last 40 years, Branford has been one of the most soulful and eloquent purveyors of a brilliant musical tradition,” says Blue Note President Don Was. “We are thrilled that his long path has finally led to the doorstep of Blue Note Records. We’re gonna do great things together!”

Branford Marsalis continues to thrill audiences around the world while racking up achievements across diverse musical platforms, even after four decades in the international spotlight. From his initial recognition as a young jazz lion, he has expanded his vision as an instrumentalist, composer, bandleader and educator, crossing stylistic boundaries while maintaining unwavering creative integrity. In the process, he has become an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence winning three GRAMMY Awards, a Tony nomination for his work as a composer on Broadway, a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as Jazz Master, and a 2021 Primetime EMMY nomination for the score he composed for the Tulsa Burning documentary.

Growing up in the rich environment of New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educator, the late Ellis Marsalis, Branford was drawn to music along with siblings Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason. The Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, remains his primary performance vehicle. In its virtually uninterrupted three-plus decades of existence, this celebrated ensemble is revered for its uncompromising interpretation of a kaleidoscopic range of both original compositions and jazz and popular classics. But Branford has not confined his music to the jazz quartet context. He recently augmented the quartet with seven Hungarian musicians for a folk music project Ősz fele van az idő (Autumn is coming) featuring music commissioned by Müpa Budapest, and his recent classical composition, Kalamazoo Suite, was commissioned by and premiered with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford is regularly sought after as a featured soloist with acclaimed orchestras around the world, performing works by composers such as Copeland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, John Williams, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem, Vaughan Williams and Villa-Lobos. And his legendary guest performances with the Grateful Dead and collaborations with Sting have made him a fan favorite in the pop arena.

Branford’s screen credits as a composer include original music for: Rustin starring Colman Domingo, the History Channel’s documentary Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race MassacreMa Rainey’s Black Bottom starring Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks starring Oprah Winfrey, and Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues. His work on Broadway has garnered a Drama Desk Award and a Tony nomination for the acclaimed revival of Fences. He recently arranged and orchestrated the music for a new Broadway production on Louis Armstrong, A Wonderful World, and his previous Broadway efforts include music for the revivals of Children of a Lesser God and A Raisin in the Sun, as well as The Mountaintop which starred Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson.

Branford is also committed to the development of the next generation of musicians. He enjoys working with students and has formed an extended relationship with North Carolina Central University where he has been teaching for the past eighteen years. He has also taught at Michigan State University and San Francisco State University and continues to conduct workshops throughout the world.

In the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Branford, along with friend Harry Connick, Jr., conceived of “Musicians’ Village,” a residential community in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The centerpiece of the Village is the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, honoring Branford’s father. The Center uses music as the focal point of a holistic strategy to build a healthy community and to deliver a broad range of services to underserved children, youth and musicians from neighborhoods battling poverty and social injustice. In January 2024, following in his father’s footsteps, Branford was appointed Artistic Director at the Center and in this capacity, he will shape the artistic trajectory and steer the organization’s creative vision for the future

Louis Stringer: Shaping Jazz’s Future With Global Rhythms #jazz #music

Louis Stringer: Shaping Jazz’s Future With Global Rhythms
In the world of jazz, where innovation and tradition often dance together in harmonious syncopation, Louis Stringer stands out as a visionary.
In the world of jazz, where innovation and tradition often dance together in harmonious syncopation, Louis Stringer stands out as a visionary. At just 27, this British jazz/world music prodigy has become a pioneering force, known for his exceptional fusion of West African and South American rhythms with free-flowing jazz. His story, as told by London-based journalist Mishti Ali, is not just one of talent but of bold exploration and profound influence.

Louis's journey began as many legendary tales do—with a spark of innate genius. Completely self-taught, he mastered the bass from watching YouTube videos and, without any formal lessons, was accepted into the Royal Birmingham Conservatory with the highest scholarship of the year. His entry into this prestigious institution marked the beginning of a career filled with accolades and standout performances.

Not long after starting at the Conservatory, Louis began making waves on the national and international jazz scene. At 22, he took the stage at the esteemed Cheltenham Jazz Festival, which draws global talent and massive audiences. Switching from his usual upright bass to electric, Louis used complex polyrhythms and broken time, reconstructing grooves with precision. This performance was a testament to his adaptability and deep understanding of diverse musical traditions.

Soon, his talent caught the eye of award-winning UK saxophonist Soweto Kinch. Impressed by Louis, Kinch, who is 30 years his senior, joined Louis’ trio for an exclusive gig at Cherry Reds, a hotspot hailed for offering some of the best live jazz in the UK. This partnership elevated Louis’s profile, leading to his pivotal role as lead bassist and rhythm section leader for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO)—a prestigious position achieved by few. NYJO, with its storied history and alumni like the late Amy Winehouse, provided Louis with a platform to shine even brighter.

His influential role with NYJO included a two-day residency at the iconic Cafe OTO during the EFG London Jazz Festival, the largest jazz festival in the UK. This festival is a mammoth event, celebrated by Forbes as “unmissable.” Louis’s leading performance here was nothing short of legendary; his precise timing and serene presence provided a foundation for the orchestra to soar.

In 2021, he became the in-house lead bassist, rhythm section leader and arranger for the award-winning The Spin in Oxford, winner of the “best in the UK” award, further cementing his status in the UK jazz scene. The following year, the BBC featured Louis, heralding him as a “jazz star.”

In 2023, Louis headlined at the renowned Panama Jazz Festival, performing for a crowd of 26,000. “Playing at Panama was surreal,” Louis says. “It’s moments like these that make all the hard work worth it.” Here, he also conducted masterclasses, sharing his invaluable insights with the next generation of musicians.

Currently, Louis imparts his vast knowledge at the Watertown School District in MA, uniquely qualified to teach all major string instruments—bass, violin, viola, and cello. This rare proficiency makes him a one-man orchestra, a phenomenon in the truest sense. And his commitment to nurturing the next generation of jazz musicians extends to conducting masterclasses at prestigious institutions such as Oxford University. It is remarkable to consider Louis, younger than many of his students, commanding a masterclass at one of the world's foremost academic institutions. His ability to inspire respect and admiration stems from a breadth of knowledge and skill that transcends his years.

What truly distinguishes Louis is his extraordinary grasp of the Great American Songbook. He has memorized over 300 tunes and can perform any one of them from memory, in any key, at a moment's notice. This feat goes beyond mere memorization; it reflects a profound, embedded understanding of a vast repertoire. His capability to deliver each piece with a unique interpretation underscores a level of artistry and genius that is exceptional.

Looking ahead, Louis’ schedule is packed with some seriously high-profile engagements that highlight his influence in the jazz world. On October 10, 2024, he’ll step into the spotlight as Guest Bassist and Music Director at the South Jersey Jazz Festival. Following that, he’ll grace the South Beach Jazz Festival on November 1, 2025. What’s especially exciting about these gigs is his collaboration with the renowned Austrian bassist Ciara Moser, who is legally blind. Louis isn't just playing; he’s orchestrating, arranging, and curating her compositions too. Together, they’re pushing boundaries, bringing the bass front and center in ways jazz hasn’t seen before. These performances are set to redefine the role of bass instruments and underscore Louis’s star power in the American jazz scene.

From 2025 to 2027, Louis will take on the role of Artist-in-Residence, Music Director, and Lead Bassist at Wally’s Café Jazz Club , a venue deeply woven into the fabric of U.S. jazz history. Founded in 1947, Wally's is one of the oldest jazz clubs in the country and was among the first African-American-owned clubs in the nation. Being chosen for this residency is not just an honor; it’s a recognition of Louis’s ability to blend innovation with tradition. At Wally’s, Louis will have the opportunity to collaborate with other top-tier jazz musicians, curate groundbreaking performances, and influence the next wave of jazz talent. It’s a role that underscores his standing in the jazz community and his potential to shape its future.

His future engagements also include an exciting residency at the award-winning Lilypad music venue. Known for its cutting-edge performances and vibrant artistic community, Lilypad has become a beacon for creative expression and musical innovation. Louis’s residency here will allow him to explore and expand his unique fusion of jazz styles in an intimate, experimental setting. This residency is a unique opportunity for Louis to interact with a diverse audience and push the boundaries of conventional jazz performances.

On top of those, he’s also lined up major concerts at Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center and Nublu in New York. Performing at Dizzy's Club is a significant honor; it’s part of the prestigious Lincoln Center, where only the top-tier artists take the stage. Legends like Wynton Marsalis and Diana Krall have graced this venue, making it a symbol of excellence in the jazz world. This venue is synonymous with excellence and artistry, and being featured here signals Louis's arrival at the pinnacle of the jazz world. Nublu, on the other hand, is a hotspot known for its cutting-edge acts and has hosted giants like Norah Jones and the Brazilian Girls. Playing at these venues will further consolidate Louis’s position among the jazz elite, allowing him to showcase his unparalleled skills to a discerning and appreciative audience.

Louis Stringer's journey is a fascinating portrait of a young maestro who’s reshaping jazz with his unique blend of global rhythms. “Jazz is a living, breathing art form,” he says. “It evolves with every performance, and I’m just excited to be part of that evolution.”

With a career already filled with groundbreaking performances and accolades, Louis Stringer is undoubtedly one of the brightest stars in the jazz constellation. Stay tuned—his next moves promise to be just as thrilling as his journey so far.

Innervision Records celebrates another successful Billboard chart year #jazz

Innervision Records celebrates another successful Billboard chart year

The No. 3 Smooth Jazz Label of the Year for the fifth consecutive time will showcase its roster at the After NAMM JAMM at Spaghettini on January 28.

Innervision Records’s depth and consistency won the boutique label the honor of being Billboard’s No. 3 Smooth Jazz Label of the Year for the fifth consecutive year, which was made possible by having four different artists land five Billboard top ten singles in 2023.

After scoring Billboard’s Smooth Jazz Song of the Year in 2022 with “SHINE!,” flutist Kim Scott continued her winning ways in 2023 by issuing two Billboard top ten singles: “Magic City Streets” and “Off The Top.” Innervision Records opened the year at No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart courtesy of saxophonist Will Donato’s “Good On You.” A pair of the Southern California-based label’s guitarists went top ten last year with Blake Aaron crushing it with “Crush” and JJ Sansaverino cruising up the chart with “Ride With Me.”

“We are so proud of Innervision Records earning the No. 3 Smooth Jazz Label of the Year at Billboard for five consecutive years. Innervision is truly the most artist-friendly record label around with a business model that has stood the test of time. Our artists are like family and our team is dedicated to ensuring the success of each and every one of our artists,” said Innervision Records’ A&R and radio promotions executive Adam Leibovitz.

Aaron, one of the first artists inked to Innervision Records when the label launched 26 years ago, will kick off the 2024 release slate on Friday (January 5) with “She’s the One.” The tune produced by Billboard hitmaker Adam Hawley and written by Aaron, Hawley and Carnell Harrell is the latest single culled from Aaron’s “Love and Rhythm” album, which drops on April 19. It’s a romantic groove buoyed by lush melodies and bodes to become the third Billboard No. 1 single from Aaron’s forthcoming collection.

“As soon as I heard this beautiful track from Adam Hawley and Carnell Harrell, it immediately inspired me to write a captivating and infectious guitar melody, which I sang into my iPhone and later became the single, ‘She’s the One.’ It’s the second single to come from an old-school recording session that I did with Adam (Hawley) when we locked ourselves in the studio and vowed not to emerge until we finished two new songs,” said Aaron.

For the eleventh year, Innervision Records will proudly highlight their roster at their After NAMM JAMM held at Spaghettini south of Los Angeles on January 28, the closing night of the NAMM Convention. Among the label’s artists scheduled to take the stage to perform are Aaron, Sansaverino, Donato, Erin StevensonTom BraxtonDean JamesKeith AndrewRick HabanaCharles A. KellyAysha and Dean Grech.

2024 promises to be another dominant year for Innervision Records with new albums coming from Aaron, Scott (“Livin’ It Up”), Stevenson (“UnderCover Girl”) and Cal Harris Jr. (“Bridges”).

Innervision Records’ general manager Steve Belkin said, “At Innervision Records, we are very grateful for the continued growth and success this 'artist family label’ has experienced over the last two-and-a-half decades and look forward to reaching new heights in 2024 with a record number of exciting, new releases and lots of great music from our outstanding and talented roster."

25th Anniversary of Susan Tedeschi's Album 'Just Won't Burn' on Fantasy / Concord

25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF SUSAN TEDESCHI’S BREAKTHROUGH ALBUM JUST WON'T BURN OUT NOW
VIA FANTASY RECORDS / CONCORD

16-TRACK SPECIAL EDITION INCLUDES PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED BONUS MATERIAL AND LIVE VERSIONS

PBS NewsHour profile:
https://www.pbs.org/video/tedeschi-trucks-band-1695416927/

The 25th Anniversary edition of Susan Tedeschi’s breakthrough album, Just Won’t Burn, is available now via Fantasy Records / Concord. This special, 16-track expanded edition features the original album plus five previously unreleased bonus tracks: an alternate take of “Looking For Answers,” two new album outtakes, and two live versions of Just Won’t Burn album tracks recorded with Tedeschi Trucks Band at NYC’s Beacon Theatre.

Tedeschi is one of the most celebrated blues and American roots musicians of her generation, known for her unyielding commitment to her craft – both as a solo artist and in Tedeschi Trucks Band – which has earned her multiple GRAMMY nominations and the adoration of audiences around the world. It all began humbly at blues jams in her native Boston back in the early ‘90s and led to significant regional  acclaim, but with the 1998 release of her solo debut, Just Won’t Burn, Tedeschi put the wider music world on notice that she was a true force to be reckoned with.

“Making Just Won’t Burn was a pivot,” Tedeschi says of the album, which features musicians such as guitarists Adrienne Hayes and Sean Costello, harmonica player Annie Raines, percussionist/songwriter Tom Hambridge, and keyboardist Tom West tackling her original songs in tandem with material popularized by Ruth Brown (“Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean”), Junior Wells (“Little by Little”), and John Prine (“Angel From Montgomery”).

“All of a sudden, I was working with different groups of people, new musicians, new songwriting collaborators,” she adds. “We had no idea how it was going to turn out. I think the thing that held it all together was the blues. Blues is a language that I love. You can take it anywhere in the world and communicate with people, which isn’t necessarily true about other forms of music. And being a white artist in a black milieu, you just have to let the music speak.”

Speak it did, as Just Won’t Burn went platinum (a rare achievement for a blues-based album at that time) and earned Tedeschi a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2000 (alongside the hilariously of-the-moment cast of Britney Spears, Macy Gray, Kid Rock, and Christina Aguilera). It would be the first of five Grammy nominations for Tedeschi as a solo artist, with each of her next three solo releases earning nods for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

Previously, Tedeschi shared a live performance of her existential showstopper “Looking For Answers performed by Tedeschi Trucks Band at NYC’s Beacon Theatre from 2022 and a blistering version of Koko Taylor’s Voodoo Woman.”

Even after 25 years, the past-decade plus of which have seen Tedeschi rise to even greater heights with her husband Derek Trucks in Tedeschi Trucks Band, Just Won’t Burn remains a touchstone of blues-based rock’n’roll. “The way people react to Just Won’t Burn has always been heartwarming and surprising,” she admits. “I used to get letters from a prisoner who identified with the songs and found hope in them, and then I started getting letters from the rest of the prisoners on the cell block because it was the only cassette they had.”

“Sometimes when I look back on the 25 years since the release, I think about the places I’ve been and the adventures I’ve had, and I feel like Forrest Gump,” Tedeschi continues. “I say, ‘No! You’re a baseball mom. You didn’t do all that!’ But I must have. The blues has its demands. You have to be honest — musically, emotionally, and personally — above everything else, and that can lead to some uncomfortable truths. But the blues hasn’t burned me. It hasn’t hurt me. It’s my main resource. I can express myself and get stuff out about my life – or, like B.B. always said, ‘whatever ails you.’ The blues got me here.”
