World music artist Onyeka Nwelue celebrates freedom despite mental health restraints #jazz

The title track to his forthcoming debut album, “Quimbombó,” releases as a single and video.

Exultant joy, vibrant color and festive pageantry are the succulent ingredients to the multicultural gumbo served by world music artist Onyeka Nwelue on his newly released single from Walboomers Music and La Cave Musik, “Quimbombó.” While the song knitting together African and Mexican music, dance and culture celebrates freedom, Nwelue himself is confined to a chair in the accompanying video (https://youtu.be/ILRSvmDj6aQ?si=rMQTJ0UJY7YZxw9b), presiding over the festivities from afar, symbolizing the isolation of his mental health challenges.

“Quimbombó” will be the title track to Nwelue’s debut album, which is slated to arrive on January 31, his 36th birthday. Earlier this month, the highly decorated scholar, author, filmmaker and poet released his first musical foray, a single and video titled “Break Your Heart.” The song was inspired by his controversial dismissal from the University of Oxford earlier this year, a much-publicized split that Nwelue characterizes as full of misinformation, manipulation, political and racial bias. He recorded the track in Puebla, Mexico while undergoing treatment, finding that jazz helps calm and focus his mind. Comfortable taking his struggles public, he said that all the songs for the new album are about his mental health and life challenges.

The next chapter previewing the album places Nwelue in a role similar to a classic Quincy Jones joint or in a more present-day context, that of DJ Khaled. He wrote the song with longtime friend Obinna Okoro (aka Achara man), which was produced by Clément Chuks Simon (aka Lugi). Achara man and Lugi have strong vocal presences on “Quimbombó.” The single is a rich and exotic culturally diverse recording combining infectious Africano beats with Mexican Ranchera instrumentation. Splashes of urban groove and experimental jazz are also in evidence.

As Mexican dancers spin, turn and gyrate throughout the video, Nwelue grooves in his chair, an observer of the human condition. The party spills out into the streets, erupting into a joyous sea of humanity, yet Nwelue remains separate and apart. He sets the pulse that moves and touches the world yet he himself is unable to join in. Ironically, he describes the single as “a way of showing how free I am.”

While Nwelue prolifically crafts music for the “Quimbombó” collection – he’s plotting to drop a third single in early September - his next book, “The Nigerian Mafia: Mumbai,” will be published in India on October 1. On that same day, Nwelue begins a new position as the director of Africa Center Mexico in Puebla. He’s had academic affiliations with many of the world’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning that span the globe, including CambridgeUniversité QueenslandHarvard UniversityUniversity of JohannesburgUniversity of Manipur and University of Hong Kong.

Toronto's Multilingual Jazz Virtuoso Fuat Tuac Enchants with New Single 'Uzun Ince Bir Yoldayim' from Acclaimed Album Immigrant #jazz

Toronto-based, multilingual jazz vocalist, Fuat Tuac, has unveiled his new single "Uzun Ince Bir Yoldayim," the latest addition to his recently released and highly praised album "Immigrant" – available now!

Tuac’s "Immigrant” has been making waves on the Roots Music Report’s Canadian Chart for the 13th consecutive week, garnering praise from fans and critics alike. A true testament to his artistic prowess, the album showcases his multi-dimensional talents as he navigates between three different languages - English, French, and his native, Turkish – displaying diverse jazz styles that resonate with audiences across the globe.

“Uzun Ince Bir Yoldayim,” the most famous traditional Turkish masterpiece originally penned by renowned 20th-century poet Asik Veysel, embraces the profound concept of life being a long and winding road, offering a poignant reflection on the journey we all embark on.

“The song is about life which is a long and winding road, and the poet says he walks the path day and night”, says Tuac. “He uses the metaphor of a hotel with two doors for life, from one door you enter (birth) and from the other one you exit (death), and you are only a guest in this life. I sing it with the renowned Istanbul singer, Yesim Akin, and we recorded the vocals in Istanbul.”

Deeply personal and profoundly touching, "Immigrant" delves into Tuac's own experiences as an immigrant living in Toronto. The album provides an intimate glimpse into the challenges, triumphs, and lessons he has encountered throughout his journey.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the album, Tuac expressed, "Immigration is a very hot issue in the world now. People move around the world for one reason or another, even COVID could not stop them. And I wanted to share my story in Canada as an immigrant. I wanted to talk about my journey in Canada, the people I’ve met along the way, my experience inside and outside the jazz world, what I anticipated from Canada and what I’ve found, how people see me and how I see them. I wanted to talk about all of this and inspire people."

Fuat Tuac's musical journey is a testament to his unique pedigree. Prior to his remarkable career in jazz, he worked as a lawyer, practicing law in Istanbul, France, and the UK. However, his passion for jazz eventually took precedence, leading him to pursue a full-time musical career. Relocating to Montreal in 2011 to study jazz at Concordia University, he honed his craft in local bars and clubs before releasing his first critically acclaimed album, "Late Bloomer," in 2017.

Contemporary jazz saxophonist Carl Cox uses music to connect “In Time of Need” #jazz

Two new songs will be added to the “Universal Language” album, arriving October 13.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote that “Music is the universal language of mankind,” and during recent Ukrainian bombing raids, a man named Yuri found solace listening to contemporary jazz saxophonist Carl Cox’s music on an old cell phone. Through Facebook, he found and messaged Cox to tell him his story, and how he was introducing the South New Jersey-based musician’s music to others seeking safe shelter with him. The experience moved Cox to write a bonus song for his “Universal Language” album titled “In Time of Need.” The project drops on October 13.

Whereas most of the album – all originals cowritten by Cox – is an up-tempo blend of jazz, R&B and funk, “In Time of Need” reflects its origins. The heartfelt ballad offers a reassuring caress provided by an intimate soprano sax and acoustic guitar melody with soothing string accents that kindle feelings of peace and hope for the future.

Cox spent the last year working on “Universal Language,” his sophomore album. The majority of the project was produced and co-written by two-time Grammy nominee Chris “Big Dog” Davis (Will Downing, Dave Koz, Rick Braun, Gerald Albright) with one cut, the high-energy “Get It,” produced and co-written by twelve-time Billboard chart-topping guitarist Adam Hawley. Over the last twelve months, Cox dropped three singles from the set that garnered most added status on the Billboard chart and were added to the SiriusXM Watercolors playlist - “Breakin Away,” “Stickwidit” and “Can’t Hurry Love.”

Without fanfare, Cox soft-launched “Universal Language” in April, but he feels that “In Time of Need” makes the album complete. That’s why he added the song to an updated version of the collection, which becomes available on October 13. And since he was adding more music to the bonus version of the album, Cox threw in a second brand new track, “Be Mine.” A recent collab with Davis, this one is a sensual romancer that builds in intensity.

“‘Universal Language’ was a labor of love for me and Yuri showing up in my DMs was really an unexpected gift that confirmed my intensions for this project. From the start, the concept of the album was to connect with anyone in the world. I often tell my music students that music is the universal language that can be spoken immediately through one’s instrument without having to say a spoken word. A variety of standards can be sung or played with about any musician in the world simply by quoting the melody or harmony. I have had the ability to play with a variety of groups from other countries and we always connect when our instruments are played together on stage. That’s the concept that I wanted to bring to my listeners and hopefully have anyone in the world connect through this instrumental music,” said Cox, who has concert dates booked through the end of the year with his own band and as a featured soloist alongside MaysaOli Silk and Gerald Veasley

The album opens powerfully with “Breakin Away,” a tip of the cap to the David Sanborn-Marcus Miller contemporary jazz era while breaking away from the restrictive confines of music genres. Cox rips boundary-bursting sax licks over a funky groove amidst diverse harmonic elements skillfully deployed by Davis.

Sharing the encouragement from one of his teachers, Cox says that the optimistic “Stickwidit” is about never giving up on your chosen path.

“He said, ‘If it is to be, it is up to me.’ That wisdom instilled in me early on that I should be proactive and take action to create the life I want instead of just reacting to circumstances,” Cox recalled.

The mood takes on exotic Latin qualities on “Can’t Hurry Love,” on which Cox’s sax sambas in a cascading duet of harmonies and melodies to symbolize the interweaving emotions between romantic partners.

Cox teamed up with longtime friend Steve Tirpak (Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, Lana Del Rey) for “Reminisce,” a lush and interestingly textured drums and bass R&B groove not typically heard in contemporary jazz.

“The song title embraces the times Steve (Tirpak) and I shared as young musicians at University of the Arts in Philadelphia trying to learn and share ideas in the music idiom,” explained Cox.

Cox continues to take chances on “Risk,” testing the limits of how contemporary jazz is defined. He wrote the upbeat dance track with multi-instrumentalist Damon Bennett (Jill Scott, Jazmine Sullivan, Floetry), with whom he previously collaborated on his 2021 debut album, “Thankful.”

Paying homage to British soul-jazz band Incognito with whom Cox toured in the U.S., “Universe of Love” beams radiant light and joyous energy. The band’s leader, Bluey, performed on the title track of Cox’s “Thankful.”

“I was so overwhelmed by Bluey’s caring and nurturing personality on the tour. He would  always treat people with respect and love, hence the song title ‘Universe of Love,’” said Cox.

A summer trip with his wife and son inspired Cox to write “Cape May,” named for the popular Jersey seaside resort destination. It’s another joint that he wrote with Bennett which has neo soul nuances.

“Red Light” stops for nothing. While Cox explains its origins as representative of red-light districts, this track also possesses an undeniable Marvin Gaye party vibe.

Symbolic of how our senses can instantly take us back in time, richly evoking cherished memories, Cox and Bennett unite again on “Evanescence.”

The tempo of “Morning Sunrise” sets an empowering mood.

“I wanted to bring energy to get the day started with an upbeat, fresh feeling to take on the world!”

Cox, who has a master’s degree in music education and has shared the stage with Smokey Robinson, hit the Billboard top 30 with the single “Elevation” from “Thankful.” Recently, he hit one million plays on Apple Music and anticipates growing with the bonus edition of “Universal Language.”

The bonus version of “Universal Language” contains the following songs:

“Breakin Away”

“Stickwidit”

“Can’t Hurry Love”

“Reminisce”

“Risk”

“Universe of Love”

“Cape May”

“Get It”

“Red Light”

“Evanescence”

“Morning Sunrise”

“Sensual” guitar 2unes #jazz

The new jazz-R&B single written and produced by two-time Grammy nominee Chris “Big Dog” Davis is an offering of positivity to the world.

The newly released single from jazz-R&B guitarist 2unes aka North Woodall, “Sensual,” is intended to provide an exotic and enchanting caress to a troubled world. Written and produced by two-time Grammy nominee, Chris “Big Dog” Davis (Will Downing, Dave Koz, Rick Braun, Gerald Albright), the gorgeous instrumental track released by 2uneswave Records features 2unes’s delicate acoustic guitar sketching a hauntingly gorgeous and alluring melody.

Aside from 2unes’s hypnotic riff and expressive fretwork, which is the focal point of the single, Davis handled the rest of the instrumentation on “Sensual,” crafting the soothing rhythm track, lush keyboard embellishments and nuanced programming. The acoustic guitar is a bit of a departure for 2unes, who primarily wields an electric guitar.

“When I first heard the song, I knew in my heart that I had to perform it on acoustic guitar. And the first time I played it, sheer happiness fell over me when I played the very first note. The song embodies everything I stand for, and it gave me a glimpse of the world I would like to live in,” said the Atlanta-based Woodall, who released an accompanying video for “Sensual,” which can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmOagxC4QBE.

2unes released “Sensual” as an offering with a greater purpose.

“Sensual to me means gratification of the senses. With all the negative things going on in the world today, from homelessness to wars, I felt that a positive vibe is needed now more than ever. If I can bring some fun and happiness to even one person, then this song will achieve its intended goal. It’s about creating more smiles than tears,” said Woodall, who hopes the single will cross over into other markets.

Woodall discovered the guitar when he was eleven years old. Growing up in Dayton, Ohio, mesmerized by guitarists Ernie IsleyCarlos Santana and Joe Walsh, he was an ardent fan of R&B, funk, rock and pop music. Woodall played in a couple of local bands before relocating to Atlanta. He has been recording as 2unes since 2005, uniquely blending jazz, R&B, hip-hop and soul music on his debut disc, “Hot & Cool.” Three more albums followed, spawning an array of singles, including the title track from 2022’s “Still Hanging.” In concert, he has shared the stage with Brian McKnightLakesideOhio PlayersRoger Troutman and ZappRoy AyersMillie JacksonTom Browne and Will Downing.

2unes is working on his fifth full-length album that he aims to release in the first quarter of 2024. Before then will be another single that he created with Davis. His gift is taking compositions and using his guitar to illuminate them, instilling positive feelings of hope and joy.

“I propelled it from the paper it was written on, to the stings of my guitar, and then onto the world for all to enjoy.”

Jon Batiste: Opening portals to new musical worlds #jazz

In April 2022, Lenny Kravitz was reading out the nominees for album of the year at the Grammy Awards.

When he came to Jon Batiste's We Are, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas turned to the musician and whispered: "We hope it's you."

Their wish came true.

Batiste took home the night's biggest prize, beating high-profile releases by Taylor Swift, Lil Nas X and Eilish herself - with a record that had virtually no commercial impact.

Voters at the Recording Academy were seduced by its hopeful message and its spiritual blend of soul, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop.

But critics called the decision "a huge misfire" that proved the Grammys were "out of touch with the real world".

And although Batiste was the first black artist to win best album in 14 years, one publication complained his music was not "at the forefront of this century's defining hip-hop and R&B sounds".

Surprisingly, the 36-year-old welcomed the debate.
