Dave Brubeck at New York's Blue Note

Declared a Living Legend by the Library of Congress, jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck will be capping off a banner year in his extraordinary career with a three-night run of six shows at New York's Blue Note on November 27-29 and being honored at the 2009 Kennedy Center Honors in Washington on December 6, the artist's 89th birthday. The 32nd Annual Kennedy Center Honors Gala Program will be broadcast on CBS television on December 29, 2009.

"Dave Brubeck's genius has dazzled us for six decades and has helped to define an American art form, " said Kennedy Center Chairman Stephen A. Schwarzman. "This year, the Kennedy Center celebrates five extraordinary individuals whose unique and abundant artistry has contributed significantly to the cultural life of our nation and the world." (Other honorees this year are Mel Brooks, Robert De Niro, Bruce Springsteen and opera singer Grace Bumbry.)

2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Brubeck's Time Out, one of the most loved and best selling jazz albums of all time, and its centerpiece track, "Take Five, " an eternally cool sonic tonic for an endless summer night which became the first million-selling jazz single in Billboard Hot 100 history.

Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings/Sony Music celebrated the album's 50th anniversary with a three-disc edition of Time Out featuring the original album (remastered for the first time since 1997) in its entirety, a CD of eight previously unreleased live performances from the 1961, 1963 and 1964 Newport Jazz Festival, and a DVD premiering a 30-minute documentary on the making of Time Out, with an exclusive Brubeck interview, extensive performance footage and more. "This package adds tremendously to the value of the original album, " wrote the All Music Guide.

A new Legacy Edition of another classic jazz title from the Dave Brubeck Columbia Records catalog has been planned for release in 2010.

Still actively performing throughout each year, Dave Brubeck and his Quartet helped launch the Time Out Legacy Edition with an incandescent mini-set at the Soho Apple Store in New York on Tuesday, July 21, 2009.

Grandpa Elliott To Release First Album On Playing For Change Records

In partnership with the Concord Music Group, Playing For Change announced the launch of a new record label that will support releases from select artists associated with the global music and multi-media collective Playing For Change. The first artist signed to Playing For Change Records/Concord Music Group is legendary New Orleans street performer “Grandpa” Elliott whose debut album Sugar Sweet will be released on Nov. 3rd. Grandpa Elliott has been entertaining audiences in the French Quarter for over sixty years, but his popularity has gone global in the last year after the Playing for Change hit viral video for “Stand By Me”, featuring 37 musicians from all over the world received over 30 million views on sites like YouTube and Vimeo.

[WMP Stream] Sugar Is Sweet

“Grandpa” Elliott Small, singing on the streets of New Orleans since he was a six year old, can capture a crowd with a single note. His mellow baritone makes the sounds of a busy New Orleans street fall away with its warm sincerity and while the blues may inform his lyrical harmonica playing, he has his own unique sound. Sugar Sweet, produced by Playing For Change founder Mark Johnson and Reggie McBride, was recorded in New Orleans with the Playing For Change Band. Grandpa Elliott has been singing with the PFC Band for the past year and they have developed an uncanny rapport. Their enthusiasm and ability to lay down sturdy, elastic grooves is evident throughout the album, adding sympathetic backing to Elliott’s soulful vocals and sinuous harmonica.

Banner 2 Banner 1 go!

“Grandpa Elliott embodies everything the Playing For Change project is about,” Johnson says. “Soul, talent, and perseverance. He brought the rawness of the street into the studio and cut the tunes in one take, with no set list and made every song his own. There’s a line in ‘Sugar Sweet’ that says ‘I love you more than the blood that runs through my veins.’ That’s how Grandpa feels about music. You can hear it in every note he sings.”

On the title track, the guitars of Jason Tamba from the DR Congo and Zimbabwe ’s Louis Mhlanga play a New Orleans style rumba with a hint of ska, while drummer Peter Bunetta lays down subtle percussion fills. Grandpa Elliott’s voice is fluid, with quicksilver phrasing that falls before and behind the beat, playing with rhythm and meter. “Ain’t Nothing You Can Do,” an early hit for Bobby “Blue” Bland, gets a makeover that combines the swing of Tamba and Mhlanga, with an R&B feel, Elliott’s vocal slips from a buoyant tenor to a playful, bluesy growl as he adds subtle harmonica accents. Grandpa Elliott learned “Share Your Love With Me” from an Aretha Franklin recording and the band gives it a stripped down, old school R&B reading. “Fannie Mae” was cut at a rousing live concert performance with Keb’ Mo’ sitting in on electric guitar. It includes a blazing harp solo from Grandpa Elliott and lets the band show off its considerable instrumental prowess.

Grammy-winning producer/engineer/filmmaker Mark Johnson founded Playing For Change on the simple idea that the world can find peace through music. It’s been an incredible year for the project and momentum continues to build as Johnson and the musicians of Playing For Change were named “Persons of the Week” on ABC’s World News Tonight with Charlie Gibson last month and have been profiled many times nationally including NPR’s Morning Edition, CBS News Sunday Morning and PBS’ Bill Moyers Journal just to name a few. They have already performed twice on NBC’s The Tonight Show and Grandpa recently performed an emotional rendition of “Stand By Me” on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report.

Playing For Change has been one of 2009’s most unlikely and startling cultural phenomenons. Hear Music/Concord Music Group’s two-disc CD/DVD Playing For Change – Songs Around the World, released April 28th, stunned the music industry selling over twenty-six thousand copies in it’s first week and landing at #10 on Billboard’s Top 200 Pop chart. (The Playing For Change – Songs Around The World - Deluxe Edition, featuring the full-length documentary Peace Through Music broadcast this summer nation-wide on PBS, will be released on October 13th.) This remarkable and unpredicted popular response has been driven by tens of millions of video hits, countless blogs and pure viral communication between fans and followers. The project’s deep emotional resonance, combined with the muscle of the internet and word-of-mouth has struck a profoundly enduring chord world-wide.

The PFC Band and Grandpa Elliott can be seen on a nation-wide tour this fall. After all these years of persevering through incredible hardships and performing for free, Grandpa has become an instant icon. “A man don’t live that long and, when you’re in your 60s, you know you’re ready to go any time,” he says with a smile. “So I’m looking for success to happen now. I’m eager and hungry and there’s no stopping me.”

Google Prepares Music Search Service

Google plans to launch a music service, Wired.com has confirmed with sources familiar with the situation. Next to nothing is known about the service at this point, rumored to be called “Google Music,” “Google Audio,” or “One Box,” although we have confirmed that it will be announced next Wednesday, and that it will link out to two music services: Lala and iLike.

Google will not become a music retailer itself, but will offer enhanced music search with a streaming function — first of possibly several vertical search offerings. Searching for an artist or song will apparently bring up a box (thus Google’s working title: “One Box”) with a streaming link randomly assigned to stream songs from either Lala or iLike, the latter of which was acquired by MySpace in August.

Lala, iLike, “and others” will announce the service next Wednesday at Capital Records Music in Hollywood, California, with musical guests OneRepublic plus members of Linkin Park and Dead by Sunrise.

ConcertTickets_html_v5 MSThe RSVP on the invitation (right) links to an e-mail address at secure online event registration company Paragon New Media, which lists Google as a client. After spotting that, we confirmed with a source close to the situation that Google’s upcoming music service will be announced at the event.

Google’s music search service, whatever it ends up being called, will include music from all four major labels and, most likely, all of the indie content on iLike and Lala (as one insider put it, it would be harder to remove a subset of songs from those services than to let Google simply index all of it).

iLike currently streams some songs as 30-second samples and others as full-length songs, and sells MP3s for the usual prices. Lala allows registered users to stream complete songs and albums once, for free, after which point they can buy streaming songs 10 cents that can be credited to the purchase of the full download. At this point, it’s not clear how these services will behave when presented through Google’s search interface.

Google has yet to respond to our requests for comment. The company is also building the back-end for the majors’ upcoming Vevo music video service, and operates a free download service in China that TechCrunch says will not resemble whatever Google launches here in the U.S. and possibly elsewhere as well.

After this music search product launches next Wednesday, we understand that Google plans to release other search verticals, possibly including a travel booking service.

Soulful Singer Kristina Train Releases "Spilt Milk" On Blue Note Today

“I always had a feeling that music wouldn’t just be in my life,” declares singer Kristina Train. “It would be my life.”
Full Album Stream

Today, October 20, Blue Note Records will release Spilt Milk, the stunning debut album from singer Kristina Train. After a run of opening dates with Chris Isaak last month, Kristina is hitting the road again opening for Keb’ Mo’ and Susan Tedeschi, giving audiences around the country an early chance to hear her perform the affecting songs from her debut in a live setting.

“In showbiz you need flashy costumes and talent,” said Isaak. “I have the flashy costumes, Kristina has the talent! She is really an amazing singer. I am a fan like everybody else who hears her voice… She is that good.”

With Spilt Milk, Kristina—who was born in New York City and raised in Savannah , Georgia —has made an urbane, soulful, and lush debut that showcases her stunning voice. As a vocalist, she alternates between gentle balladeering and powerful belting, her bluesy vibrato revealing the breadth and elegance of a young Dusty Springfield — a little bit London, a little bit Memphis.

Interestingly, Kristina’s story is in many ways the inverse of Springfield ’s. In her case it’s the soulful Southern girl with the awe-inspiring voice that heads to London to find inspiration and record her debut statement. Spilt Milk was recorded with Jimmy Hogarth, the sought-after British producer whose recent credits include Duffy, Corinne Bailey Rae, and James Blunt. Powerhouse songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and arranger Eg White (a Grammy Awards Record of the Year nominee earlier this year for Adele’s “Chasing Pavements”) co-wrote most of the songs with Kristina, who delivers them so convincingly that the words could be pages torn from her diary.

A potentially devastating turn of events during the recording sessions revealed a great deal about the determination and patience with which Kristina has pursued her dream. After having recorded most of the album, a disastrous computer glitch resulted in the deletion of nearly all the music that had been completed. What might have been a crushing blow to a lesser individual, Kristina instead turned into inspiration, rallying her cohorts and re-cutting the vanished material with even more passion. The experience even provided her with an album title, because there’s no sense in crying over spilt milk.

City Sounds Radio: Jazz in the City presents The Big Windy Cat guitarist Nick Colionne 11/25

Nick ColionneNick Colionne - Guitarist, vocalist, producer, arranger and fashion plate.......yes that's right.....fashion plate. It seems several topics come up when talking about Nick;

o he has more clothes and shoes than Macy's
o puts on a tremendous show
o and, of course, has a charted album, titled No Limits, currently filling the airwaves.

Yes, he's all that and more, but at the end of the day, when all that's set aside, we see another side of Nick Colionne. We see a very caring individual who has spent the major portion of his adult life mentoring children (kindergarten through eighth grade) in his local area grade school in Chicago. He has helped raise funds to keep the music programs alive and has taught a young generation that there really is something to this music called Jazz. There is much more to this story and it's definitely a topic we'll discuss with Nick.

So join our friends on Sunday, October 25th on Jazz In The City, 11:00am Pacific Daylight Time at: City Sounds Radio or use the City Sounds buttons on your right.

Peter White's "Good Day" And A Story About His Electric Guitar [Video EPK]

When Peter White released “Good Day,” on September 8, it was no surprise that his new CD debuted at the top of Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. For nearly twenty years, Peter has made the acoustic guitar a dynamic and expressive voice in the soundscape of contemporary jazz.

However, many people don’t realize that Peter started out playing the electric guitar. But his musical aspirations abruptly veered in an acoustic direction when his beloved axe was destroyed in a fire, one that his younger brother Danny accidentally started.

“The funny thing is that Danny didn’t actually admit to setting that fire for at least twenty-five years,” Peter says. “I had been kind of obsessed with the electric guitar at that point in my life, so that episode kind of forced me to go back to playing the acoustic. In retrospect, that’s a good thing.”

Indeed, Peter’s interests after the accident shifted more toward the music of acoustic artists like Crosby , Stills and Nash, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell. He had decided by his late teens that music was his calling, and his first professional gig was at a holiday resort when he was 19 years old. A year later, he was invited to join pop balladeer Al Stewart’s band as a keyboard player for a tour of England , Scotland , and the U.S.

Peter worked with Stewart in the studio in the making of “Year of the Cat,” which became a huge hit in 1976, and the two musicians co-wrote numerous songs, including Stewart’s 1978 hit, “Time Passages,” released when Peter was 23. He’s also played with singer Basia on all her recordings and tours, from 1987 to present day.

Peter continues to maintain a busy tour schedule, playing over 100 dates this year. He tours the U.K. in early November and returns to the U.S. to perform a string of Christmas dates with Dave Koz & Friends.
