Having a Watershed Moment John Stein Hits All the Right Notes on a Beautiful New Record #jazz

You could say that John Stein has been working towards this moment for most of his career. Both as an educator, and as an acclaimed jazz guitarist, Stein has been building his audience, building his understanding of the idiom, and creating a style for himself, a unique form of expression that will, without a doubt, establish him as a premier purveyor of jazz on guitar.

Watershed, the guitarist’s 15th overall recording and his 11th for Whaling City Sound, is definitely that moment. The recording presents Stein and his band digging into a remarkable set of deep grooves with incredible clarity and creativity. With a wonderfully diverse repertoire, one that traverses a spectrum of styles and tempos, the band approaches Stein’s song selections with genuine flair and a shared energy. Watershed was recorded last May while on a concert tour in Brazil with Brazilian jazz stars: Frank Herzberg (bass), Zé Eduardo Nazario (drums), Daniel Grajew (keyboards), and Teco Cardoso (flute and saxes). The musicians peel back the layers of these compositions to reveal the magic hiding in these grooves and rhythms. Each contributor is an equal accomplice, especially on tunes like the delicate opener and Stein original "Rio Escuro,” the friskier, more playful “Kobe,” the hushed but sassy funk of Pat Martino’s “Cisco,” and the breezily melodic “Wally.” Stein has always been inspired by the jazz genius Jim Hall, and here he takes a brilliant turn on Hall’s own composition, “Waltz New.” Stein’s soloing here is transcendent, proving that he deserves the Hall comparisons and then some.

Throughout the recording, each musician’s individual brilliance and cooperative spirit work together to elevate the style, the variety, the grooves, and Watershed’s authentic emotion. “Every time I listen to this recording,” Stein says, “I hear how deep and committed the grooves are on each tune. Every musician is coordinated and expressing the essence of the music with a unified voice.”

Stein, now newly retired from his acclaimed teaching career at Berklee College (also his alma mater), demonstrates he is ready for his curtain call, his opportunity to shine in the spotlight of jazz performance. He also seems to be determined to allow his band to lift his performance and take it to new and greater heights. Watershed is a magical achievement, the result of Stein’s experience and insight, of his band’s inspiration and collaboration, and of the excitement generated by both together. Like the best bandleaders, Stein puts his love and respect for his bandmates before his own musical gratification, and Watershed is the tremendous gift that emerges from that selflessness.

A Valentine’s Day bouquet of stars delivered Special EFX #jazz

The world jazz collective’s “All Stars” dropped Friday with the first radio single,
“Hanky Panky Boys,” poised for a chart debut.
Chieli Minucci is seeing stars. In fact, the guitarist has been seeing stars for a few years. A stellar array of accomplished musicians has become part of the rotating ensemble that make up his GRAMMY®  nominated band, Special EFX. Inspired creatively by the unique qualities and artistry each player brings to the stage while touring together the last several years, Minucci composed fourteen new songs for Special EFX’s 21st album, “All Stars,” tailored to each individual collaborator. The Minucci-produced project dropped Valentine’s Day on the Trippin ‘N’ Rhythm label.

The album release gives Special EFX the opportunity to continue mixing it up live on the road. Minucci and a revolving touring lineup launched a US concert tour in support of “All Stars” Thursday night at the famed Yoshi’s jazz club in Oakland and have a busy concert calendar leading up to the April 11 album release concert in New York City at The Cutting Room. Later this month, they’ll be recording a performance at SiriusXM’s Washington, DC studio for national radio broadcast.

Special EFX’s expansive playground is contemporary jazz with world music and fusion influences. They even delve into swinging blues on the disc’s frisky first single, “Hanky Panky Boys,” which is in position to debut on the Billboard singles chart. The collection contains a global aural tapestry that spans Africana, Aboriginal, Brazilian and Asian Pacific nuances. Minucci’s lyrical guitarwork weaves the thread that binds the diverse chapters into one cohesive and colorful storybook despite the enormity of the terrain covered.

Nearly two dozen musicians are part of the “All Stars” galaxy (https://bit.ly/3bvIFsN) and each is given the freedom to shine brightly. In fact, Minucci insisted upon it, encouraging and empowering each player to make their own artistic statement on the recordings. With Minucci playing a variety of electric, acoustic and nylon-string guitars, keyboards, organ, beats and backing vocals, the tracks are filled by a fluid “orchestra” composed of award-winning soul-jazz vocalist Maysa Leak, bassists Jerry BrooksGerald Veasley and Fernando Saunders; a horn and flute section constituted of Eric MarienthalDavid MannNelson RangellLin RountreeTatum Greenblatt and Mike Davis; violinists Regina Carter and Antoine Silverman; piano, organ and keyboardists Lao Tizer and Jay Rowe; drummers Lionel Cordew and Joel Rosenblatt; percussionist Mino Cinélu and Steve Adelson on Chapman Stick.  Together, this luminous ensemble creates lavish layers of astute rhythms, majestic harmonies, evocative melodies and transcendent soundscapes piloted by the prodigious guitarist’s intricate fretwork.

Below is a snippet from some of the early “All Stars” album reviews:

…a masterpiece because of the perfect mixture of the guitar, the sax and the vocals…simply heavenly.” – The Pulse of Entertainment and EUR Web

A grandiose project and piece of contemporary jazz history.” – Smooth Jazz Daily

The gloriously well rounded 14-track album is already an Album of the Year contender… Listening to his sumptuous new album and it is clearly evident that Special EFX now is a true collective, with varying elements and artists coming together to execute and build powerfully upon Minucci’s expansive musical vision.” – Exclusive Magazine

“Snappy fun stuff that moves from world jazz to solid adult party music…Dazzling fun fusion throughout.” – Midwest Record

Under The Lake members old and new unite for a jazz-funk journey #jazz

“It’s Your Horizon Too” heading to radio as a single ahead of the April 3rd album release

While doing a live radio interview in support of Under The Lake’s 2018 release, “Jazz, Groove & Attitude,” keyboardist, songwriter and producer Jayson Tipp was discussing his 28-year-old band’s ever-evolving lineup when the group’s former saxophonist-flutist Quintin Gerard W. called in. Reminiscing on-air got Tipp thinking. He had already composed the bulk of the material for the next Under The Lake album. After asking Gerard if he wanted to collaborate, Tipp reached out to two other former core band members: bassist Nathan Brown and drummer Richard Sellers. Despite hectic touring schedules, the four were able to get in sync to record “Your Horizon Too,” which drops April 3 on the Mind In Overdrive label.

The quartet met in a San Diego recording studio for a couple days of tracking, adding a new guy, the skilled hand of guitarist Patrick Yandall, to the mix. Prior to gathering, Gerard was working on his latest solo record, the recently released “Cleared For Take-off,” and asked Tipp to play on a song called “Horizon.” The experience sparked Tipp’s creative flow for Under The Lake’s disc.

“The title track came from me re-writing a song of Quintin’s that he asked me to play on for his new album. I have a different approach to the chords and rhythmic ideas from his tune and wrote a new melody. But doing that brought back to me that we had a shared musical journey. During the San Diego sessions with Richard and Nathan, we just fell back into the old ‘rhythm’ of playing together. We have so much comfort and respect for each other. ‘Your Horizon Too’ expresses the sentiment that we’re on this journey together, even if we’re sometimes traveling separately. The horizon is what your eyes are fixed on as you look forward toward your destination,” said Tipp, who leads Under The Lake on stage at concert dates throughout Oregon over the coming months.

“It’s Your Horizon Too” opens the session with an inviting melody, a loose and casual setting that offers each musician the opportunity to toss the ball around the horn. One of two reinterpretations, Under The Lake gives The Stylistics’ haunting classic “People Make The World Go ‘Round” a modern facelift stitched by Yandall’s jagged steel string guitar and Gerard’s soulful sax. “Bridgetown” provides a pleasant pathway to the vibey “Wishing It All Away.” The tempo picks up on the deftly arranged “Last Week” with Gerard’s sax guiding the harmonic recall. “Side Two” ups the sax soul power along with tangy jazz guitar licks. Sellers crafts sturdy drum beats and Brown’s rubbery bass bobs and weaves on the bright and buoyant “Diego Nuevo.” Paying homage to one of Tipp’s influences, Steely Dan, Under The Lake delivers a taut and faithful version of “Josie.” Tipp is far too modest to step into the solo spotlight often, which makes his shimmering solo on the feel-good “This One Too” a rare and sparkling gem. “Trip To The Grove” knits lush melodies while showcasing the band’s prowess for sculpting syncopated rhythms. Before wrapping, “Stealing The Night” bursts into a fusion funk workout powered by searing fretwork and thunderous organ.

Under The Lake’s roots date back to San Diego 1992 when Tipp formed the band. Their debut recording, “Dive In,” dropped the following year and “Up For Air” came out in 1995. Radio airplay, fervent reviews and major festival and club dates put Under The Lake on the national map. But then real life and parenthood set in and Tipp found it difficult to keep the unit together. After a decade of dormancy, they reunited to play Tipp’s 40th birthday, leading to their third album, 2007’s “People Together.” Again, the members drifted apart and Tipp didn’t record as Under The Lake until a couple years ago on “Jazz, Groove & Attitude,” using entirely new personnel. On “Your Horizon Too,” the core four from the first two decades of the band reconnected. The magnetic bond and chemistry remain strong as evidenced on their latest offering.

“Your Horizon Too” contains the following songs:

“It’s Your Horizon Too”
“People Make The World Go ‘Round”
“Bridgetown”
“Wishing It All Away”
“Last Week”
“Side Two”
“You Forgot Your Ticket”
“Diego Nuevo”
“Josie”
“This One Too”
“Trip To The Grove”
“Stealing The Night”

DELIA SESSIONS: The “Tiny Desk” featuring Artists in Conflict Zones Presenting Rola Azar #jazz

DELIA SESSIONS: The “Tiny Desk” featuring Artists in Conflict Zones

Delia Arts Foundation’s mission is to build infrastructure, create opportunities and make dreams come true for young musicians living in conflict and poverty zones

The Delia Arts Foundation, the organisation providing the tools, infrastructure, and resources for musicians in regions where opportunities are scarce, has just announced the launch of the Delia Sessions, a regular music show featuring Palestinian musicians, starting with Rola Milad Azar. The Delia Arts Foundation is a non-profit organisation working with musicians in conflict zones, and works with artists from conflict high-poverty regions and marginalised communities for the Delia Sessions. The first series of the Delia Sessions features young talented Palestinian musicians singing primarily traditional Arabic songs in an intimate, acoustic concert setting shot in various cities of Palestine. The Delia Sessions music videos are available for free on the Delia Arts Foundation’s YouTube channel, as well as the Delia Arts Foundation’s website. The recordings of the sessions will be available on all streaming platforms shortly after each release.

The Delia Arts Foundation aims at creating positive change in the lives of musicians and their communities, while promoting the values of peace, tolerance, creativity and humanity. The Delia Sessions will embody these values through a series of new acoustic music videos which will cover popular and traditional Arabic songs with modern arrangements, and will be performed by young and rising artists from Rola Milad Azar (6 February 2020) to Milad Fatouleh (20 February 2020 and Lina Sleibi (3 March 2020). The Delia Arts Foundation launched the Delia Sessions to bring attention to the beautiful culture of the Palestinian region and to change the stereotypes most people have from reading the headlines about the country.

Founded in 2018 by John Keating, a songsmith, producer, and philanthropist also known as Johno, the Delia Foundation’s vision is to promote world peace through the arts by initiating and supporting projects that connect various communities and create a mutual creative language; enabling the professional development of young aspiring artists, regardless of their socio-economic background or geo-political situation, and support the creation of new musical artworks, inspired by the surroundings and situations the young artists are faced with, and aspiring to manifest positive change in the world. Johno himself, an accomplished guitar and piano player, performs on the Delia Sessions and produces these traditional Arabic tracks with modern arrangements to let a new generation of audiences re-discover the beauty of these classic songs.

“These wonderfully vibrant and charismatic artists are eager to have their voices and stories heard, and producing something as subtle and modern as these sessions makes them all the more accessible to a global audience”

“Inspired by NPR's Tiny Desk, and similar live session videos, we wanted to bring this great vibe and opportunity to Palestine”, says Johno, founder of the Delia Arts Foundation. “These wonderfully vibrant and charismatic artists are eager to have their voices and stories heard, and producing something as subtle and modern as these sessions makes them all the more accessible to a global audience.”

The Delia Arts Foundation launched the first video for the Delia Sessions today on 6 February 2020. The video features Rola Milad Azar, a 27 years old independent singer and musician from Nazareth and living in Jerusalem, who sings in musical concerts and festivals throughout the world. In the first Delia session, Rola sings Ya Mayla Alghossoun and Almaya Almaya, and discusses the condition of being a musician and living off your own music in Palestine.

“These are the world's most deserving and under-served artists,'' says Johno. “As a global music industry, we have a great responsibility to help their message get across."

The Delia Arts Foundation encourages young artists and musicians in conflict zones to express themselves or showcase their talents outside of their region for new generations and new audiences globally, with the launch of a regular music video series celebrating and honouring traditional music through modern arrangements. A sweet and jazzy Valentine with love from Sophie Fatu #jazz

The 7-year-old jazz singer drops her debut EP, “Love is…,” on February 14, the same day she serves as guest host on SiriusXM’s Siriusly Sinatra

“Love is…” is no standard collection of standards. The six-song debut EP arrives Valentine’s Day from the seven-year-old jazz singer millions of television viewers fell in love with when Sophie Fatu became the youngest ever contestant on “America’s Got Talent” and sang on “Ellen” and the Steve Harvey-hosted “Little Big Shots.” Recorded at Capitol Studios where one of Fatu’s idols, Frank Sinatra, recorded and accompanied by a big band orchestra that includes musicians who backed Sinatra, “Love is…” showcases the pint-sized powerhouse belting out tunes from the Great American Songbook with the talent and pizazz of a seasoned veteran.

Fatu is the daughter of two accomplished, classically trained musicians, pianist Victoria Fatu and violinist Cristian Fatu, thus was exposed to music at an early age. She developed an affinity for jazz, particularly the classics made famous by The Rat PackElla FitzgeraldNina SimoneFrankie Lymon and modern-day crooner Michael Bublé. She picked up on and emulated their vocal delivery as she learned (memorized) their songs swiftly, becoming enamored with the music and legends who have stood the test of time.

“When I walked into Capitol Studios and saw all the pictures on the wall, I could not believe it. All the biggest stars - all my favorite artists - recorded there. I stood on the same spot where Sinatra recorded. And Dean Martin! And they recorded the same songs. That was crazy! I had the most amazing musicians working with me. They worked with Sinatra, Elvis, Ella and all the people I listened to when I fell in love with music,” said Fatu, who makes her feature film debut later this year when she costars in a major action thriller.

Issued on the Extraordinary Records imprint, “Love is…” is a serious jazz record. Anchored by a noteworthy trio consisting of drummer Jeff Hamilton (Fitzgerald, Diana Krall, Count Basie Orchestra), double bassist Chuck Berghofer (Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Ray Charles) and pianist Tom Ranier (Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, Christina Aguilera), Greg Curtis and Victoria Fatu produced the tracks that were lavishly illustrated by a 13-piece horn section and a 14-piece string section (that included Cristian Fatu). In such prestigious company, Sophie Fatu shines with panache, exhibiting virtually perfect pitch and consummate control. The national television appearances and performance videos that have garnered over 150 million views reveal a genuinely gifted vocalist who has remarkable timing, phrasing, meter and rhythm that far belie her years. Fatu also has an innate ability for infusing her magnetic charisma, exuberance, verve and boundless joy into every song that she sings.

“I’m so lucky to be singing jazz music. It’s so different from everything else. I can feel happy, excited, sad and angry - all at the same time when I sing it,” said the Los Angeles-based Fatu, an old soul with a passion and a purpose for Sinatra’s music.

“Frank Sinatra was my favorite singer since I was four-years-old. The more songs I heard, the more I loved him and wanted to sing his songs. I want to make sure no one ever forgets him and his music.”

To celebrate the album release, Fatu will serve as guest host of “Playing Favorites” on SiriusXM’s Siriusly Sinatra on Valentine’s Day. Her playlist will include cuts from Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Bublé, Tony Bennett and three tunes from “Love is…”

“I can’t believe I now have my own CD with some of my favorite songs from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Bublé and Frankie Lymon. I am very proud I made this record and I hope the whole world will love it. I’m very happy and lucky to be able to sing and perform for everyone and see people smile and get happy when they hear me. I want to do this for my whole life.”

“Love is…” contains the following songs:

“Ain’t That A Kick in the Head”
“Goody Goody”
“(Love is) The Tender Trap”
“All The Way”
“Feeling Good”
“High Hopes”

Lisa Hilton - Chalkboard Destiny #jazz

"Hilton has an absolutely unique and beautiful sound BRAVO!" Hugh Carson/KVNF Radio

“My favourite album we’ve worked on in – there’s a lot of great music!” Al Schmitt / 23 Grammy-winning engineer

“We live in an exciting time of constant change…” is the introductory quote from the award-winning composer, and acclaimed pianist Lisa Hilton, in her liner notes for her latest release Chalkboard Destiny – recorded with jazz luminaries JD Allen on tenor sax, Rudy Royston on drums and Luques Curtis on bass.

It’s an appropriate prelude for an album that unfolds with the track Rush Hour Rhapsody - quickly exposing the listener to the robust energy of her band.   There’s also a hard-to-pin-down energy flowing between Allen’s explosive virtuosic displays, the dynamic details of Royston’s accents or the booming lines of Curtis’s bass alongside Hilton’s fluid piano.  “Oh, we had a lot of fun recording this – I think you can hear that,” responds Hilton.  “I first worked with JD in 2009 for my album Twilight & Blues.  He is a true artist and I think he’s the tenor (sax) of our times.  His solo on Sympathy for Blues is the best I’ve ever heard!  I’ve toured and recorded with Rudy and Luques quite a bit too – we feel like family by now.”

The concept behind Chalkboard Destiny is the idea that our future, our destiny, can be continually reshaped, allowing us freedom in creation.  The title track easily exhibits this concept with Royston’s rim shots clacking for attention.  Hilton also shows her harmonic and emotional depth with her tender composition Temporary Lullaby, as well as the moving Waltz From Nowhere. The Joni Mitchell classic, Blue Boy showcases the compatibility of this group – Allen’s dusky tenor a contrast to his bandmates.  Tracks Tropic of Tango, Myths & Fantasy, and Adventures & Alibis all delve into a variety of Latin rhythms and engaging harmonic ideas as well.  Café au Mojo, is a bright piece where traditional ideas abound. Grammy ® Award-winning engineers Al Schmitt, Gavin Lurssen, Reuben Cohen & Fernando Lodeiro all contributed to the high-quality sound. Altogether an exuberant exhibition of top-notch players rallying around traditional ideas in new ways.  Sounds like destiny.

Real life inspirations: Contemporary jazz guitarist Chris Standring finds optimism meditating on “Real Life” #jazz

“Is There A Doctor In The House?” is the most added radio single in its debut week

Riding the momentum of being named 2019’s Artist of the Year, contemporary jazz guitarist Chris Standring’s first single from his forthcoming 13th solo album, “Real Life,” was the most added track in its debut week at radio. The curiously titled “Is There A Doctor In The House?,” which is illumined by a celestial gospel vocal sample and Standring’s joyous electric guitar parlance and rousing keyboard blasts, is one of nine new tunes written by the artist, who produced and arranged the eleven-song set dropping March 20 on the Ultimate Vibe Recordings imprint.

“The vocal intro at the time of writing seemed quite bizarre and experimental and I didn't quite know how it might pan out into a song. But there was a doctor in the house,” said Standring about the single cheekily, revealing his British humor. The Los Angeles-based musician lensed a cheerful and charming video for the single in nearby Santa Monica (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DesdBZotZRg).

Standring describes “Real Life” as “one of my more joyful albums, but also perhaps the most authentic.” Like most artists, he turned to life around him for inspiration while composing music – a compelling amalgam of slick jazz, soul-singed R&B, funk grooves and bright pop harmonies - for the session. However, what he saw - chaotic times globally and much closer to home, his aging parents’ decline due to dementia – could have resulted in a dark and somber album. To his credit, Standring vigilantly maintained sight of the silver lining thus an optimistic tone prevails. It’s a refreshing and honest listen laced with an uplifting sense of urgency.

“The album’s theme is a wake-up call that I believe people who listen to my music will relate to. 'Real Life' suggests a world we need to embrace without shoving things under the rug. This is real. Life is no rehearsal and this notion becomes ever more present the older I get. Carpe Diem!”

Seizing the day with Standring on “Real Life” are Mitchel Forman (piano), Andre Berry (bass), Kevin Axt (upright bass), Matt Rohde and Hans Zermulen (keyboards), Ronnie Gutierrez (percussion) and drummers Chris Coleman and Dave Karasony.

After opening “Real Life” with the first single, the tension is palpable on “Out Of The Blue.” Standring’s electric jazz guitar meanders through the outer edges and his keyboard lends dramatic emphasis to the track that, despite the tense mood, allows bright melodic bursts of hope. “Whatever She Wants” acquiesces via amiable fretwork atop bouncy beats and rhythmic handclaps. Heartfelt and atmospheric, “In Other Words” is a tender beauty that deftly balances intimacy, vulnerability and the promise of a glorious sunrise at dawn. Standring’s guitar romps excitedly in a playground constructed of retro 1980s electronics and scat vocalizations on “Shake You Up.” Hip-hop beats drive “What Goes Around,” on which Standring’s improvisational guitar riffs and runs squawk with an edgy air of defiance. Co-written by Standring and multi-time GRAMMY® nominated producer Lauren Christy, “Living The Poetry” is a soulful R&B joint featuring the smooth and sultry croon of Incognito vocalist Vanessa Haynes. Emoting through a nylon string acoustic guitar, Standring’s poignant “Another Train” allures with the emotion of romantic exploration. The guitar man captivates on “Tell Me A Bedtime Story” as his nimble-fingered forays roam the pages of a soothing read on the Herbie Hancock composition. Ambient and meditative, “This Mess Is A Place” is a slow burn, churning chantlike at a deliberate pace and repetitive rhythm, setting the mind free. Standring closes masterfully with a Spanish classical guitar interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Prelude From Bach Cello Suite 1.”

Last year, Standring issued “Best of Chris Standring Remixed,” which spawned his 13th Billboard Top Ten single when his reimagining of “Kaleidoscope” shot up to No. 4. Smooth Jazz Network named him Artist of the Year, not just for his own recordings, but for producing and co-writing the Billboard No. 1 hit, “Eddie’s Ready” for guitarist Thom Rotella. Standring, who debuted in 1998 with “Velvet,” has topped the Billboard chart six times as a solo artist.

“Real Life” contains the following songs:

“Is There A Doctor In The House?”
“Out Of The Blue”
“Whatever She Wants”
“In Other Words”
“Shake You Up”
“What Goes Around”
“Living The Poetry”
“Another Train”
“Tell Me A Bedtime Story”
“This Mess Is A Place”
“Prelude From Bach Cello Suite 1”
