Alice Coltrane, 69; performer, composer of jazz and New Age music; spiritual leader

Alice Coltrane, the jazz performer and composer who was inextricably linked with the adventurous musical improvisations of her late husband, legendary saxophonist John Coltrane, has died. She was 69.

Coltrane died Friday at West Hills Hospital and Medical Center in West Hills, according to an announcement from the family's publicist. She had been in frail health for some time and died of respiratory failure.

Though known to many for her contributions to jazz and early New Age music, Coltrane, a convert to Hinduism, was also a significant spiritual leader and founded the Vedantic Center, a spiritual commune now located in Agoura Hills. A guru of growing repute, she also served as the swami of the San Fernando Valley's first Hindu temple, in Chatsworth.

For much of the last nearly 40 years, she was also the keeper of her husband's musical legacy, managing his archive and estate. Her husband, one of the pivotal figures in the history of jazz, died of liver disease July 17, 1967, at the age of 40.

A pianist and organist, Alice Coltrane was noted for her astral compositions and for bringing the harp onto the jazz bandstand. Her last performances came in the fall, when she participated in an abbreviated tour that included stops in New York and San Francisco, playing with her saxophonist son, Ravi.

Saxophonist Michael Brecker dies at age 57

Michael Brecker, a versatile and much-studied jazz saxophonist who won 11 Grammys over a career that spanned more than three decades, died Saturday at age 57.

Brecker died in New York of leukemia, according to his longtime friend and agent, Darryl Pitt.

In recent years, the saxophonist had struggled myelodysplastic syndrome, a cancer in which the bone marrow stops producing enough healthy blood cells. The disease, known as MDS, often progresses to leukemia.

Becker, who had a home in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, was born in 1949 in Philadelphia and had won 11 Grammys for his work as a tenor saxophonist. He was inspired to study the tenor saxophone by the work of jazz legend John Coltrane, according to his Web site.

He and his brothers led a successful jazz-rock fusion group called the Brecker Brothers. Throughout his career, he recorded and performed with numerous jazz and pop music leaders, including Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell, according to the site.

His technique on the saxophone was widely emulated and taught. Jazziz magazine once called him "inarguably the most influential tenor stylist of the last 25 years."

Though somewhat introverted, his struggle with the blood disease led him to publicly encourage people to enroll in marrow donor programs.

Universal Music to sell classical and jazz direct to users

NewsUniversal Music today launched a classical and jazz download site to sell its music direct to users.

The Universal Classics and Jazz catalogue offers music from artists such as Jose Carreras, Katherine Jenkins, Jamie Callum and John Coltrane as well as legendary recordings from imprints such as Decca, Philips, Verve and Impulse.

The site, classicsandjazz, will also offer soundclips and reviews of songs from reputable sources such as classical magazine 'The Gramaphone'. It will also feature messageboards to allow users to interact with each other.

Universal is planning to expand the site to offer videos of full ballets and operas over the coming months.

Dickon Stainer, MD of Universal Classics and Jazz, said, "The site will revolutionise consumers' access to these genres, and offer music not available anywhere else."

Grammy Salute To Jazz

Woods, Moody to be honored

This year the Grammy Salute To Jazz will honor legends James Moody and Phil Woods. Moody has been playing the saxophone and flute for more than five decades and continues to tour extensively in the U.S. and Europe. The energetic and prolific artist is one of the most expressive and enduring figures in modern jazz. Woods, an alto saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer, has recorded extensively both as a leader and sideman since the 1950s. He has worked alongside such great musicians as Charlie Barnet, Quincy Jones, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, and Steely Dan.

The special presentation will take place Feb. 6, 2007, at the Music Box at Fonda Theater in Hollywood, Calif., from 7-10 p.m., and will feature live performances and appearances by the honorees and the Gibson/Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensembles. The President's Merit Award for outstanding achievement will be presented to Woods and Moody for their lasting contributions to jazz and the music community at large.

Ella Fitzgerald on Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service will honor Ella Fitzgerald as the 30th inductee into its Black Heritage stamp series. Fitzgerald was widely known as "The First Lady of Song". Her extraordinary vocal range and flexibility, combined with her gift for pitch, rhythmic sense, and flawless diction, made her a favorite of fans, songwriters and other singers. The stamp image is a portrait based on a photograph taken circa 1956 that captures the joy and excitement that Fitzgerald brought to music.

The Postal Service began issuing its popular Black Heritage stamp series in 1978 with a stamp honoring Harriet Tubman. Ella Fitzgerald joins a long list of legendary African-American leaders, inventors, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, entertainers, and athletes, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Marian Anderson, Malcolm X, and Madam C.J. Walker, who have appeared in the stamp series. Art director, Ethel Kessler, lauds the stamp portrait of Fitzgerald by illustrator Paul Davis of New York for the way it captures the joy and excitement she brought to music. The stamp ceremony will take place Wed., Jan. 10, 2007 at The Allen Room in Frederick P. Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York, NY.

Corinne Bailey Rae builds her name

On Grammy night, U.K. newcomer Corinne Bailey Rae hopes to waltz through the door her soulful pop colleague Norah Jones kicked open in 2003, when she won five awards including best new artist and album of the year.

Rae, whose self-titled debut was released internationally in February and in June Stateside, will compete on February 11 for best new artist, as well as for record and song of the year for the irresistible "Put Your Records On." Although the track stalled at No. 64 on Billboard's flagship Hot 100 singles chart, it was a hit at various radio formats.

The laid-back craftsmanship of Jones is a definite touchstone of Rae's sound, but the artist also dabbles in neo-soul and jazzy arrangements on her debut, which has sold a hefty 599,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Sales have increased during six of the past seven weeks.

And like Jones, Rae has appealed to a wide range of consumers right out of the gate, a fact she attributes to a shift in listening tastes.

"I think music is going in two directions," she says. "People like a lot of popular music where songs don't mean much, but it's about hooks, production and little catchy things. Then there are people who also like listening to someone strumming a guitar and playing a song.

"I really admire both styles -- the Carole Kings of 'How does a song work?' and more like inventing a new style of production, like on (Snoop Dogg's) 'Drop It Like It's Hot.'

"I really tried to stay away from what's happening in contemporary music and just listened a lot to the music I love, like Marvin Gaye, Al Green and Stevie Wonder, and thought of that as a benchmark," she explains.

Rae, 27, was born in Leeds. She formed her first band in the '90s, a rock outfit, before enrolling in university in her hometown. While there, she worked in a jazz club and decided to move in a new direction herself, according to her label biography.

Rae has built her audience with extensive North American touring and numerous TV appearances, beginning with "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and "Good Morning America" in June and continuing through with mid-December performances on TNT's "Christmas in Washington" and CBS' "The Early Show."

And, in a booking that proves Rae's own idols are embracing her music, she was chosen to perform alongside Wonder at his December 16 House Full of Toys benefit in Los Angeles. Rae also recently taped an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" with Mary J. Blige that will air January 16.

"I haven't had a chance to really think about (how) anyone could get to hear" the album, she says. "Once you've made it and it's out there, it works for you, but it has its own life and legs and you never know who's going to get to hear it. That's been the amazing thing."

Rae will return to the road in North America in late winter or early spring, according to her U.S. label Capitol, which is still weighing options for the next single from her album.

Guitarist Jeff Golub embraces New York City on Grand Central

March 6th album release previewed by “Hello Betty,” spring/summer tour planned

With a spirit, energy and diversity that are uniquely New York City, guitarist Jeff Golub will open the doors to Grand Central, his seventh solo album, on March 6th. Golub produced most of the Narada Jazz/Blue Note Label Group collection of electric and acoustic blues, contemporary jazz, rock and pop with Steven Miller, with a few tracks produced by Rick Braun and Paul Brown. Roaring out of the station first is “Hello Betty,” which is engineered by Golub’s cool-toned electric riffing and powered by an incendiary horn section. Conductors will begin punching tickets for the track at smooth jazz radio on February 5th.

Golub has a natural flare for delivering raw and honest recordings. Grand Central was primarily recorded with a live band in a New York studio by musicians Golub jams and improvises with at small, informal club gigs around the city that they do for the love of playing when they’re off the road. Golub deftly deployed a clean blues sound to his guitar that took on more of a lyrical, vocal-like quality on the new record. The New York City dweller wrote or co-wrote nine new songs for the disc in addition to selecting a few classics to record, including Sly Stone’s “If You Want Me To Stay,” George Harrison’s “Something,” and the soulful “Ain’t No Woman,” on which saxophonist Richard Elliot shines. Other luminaries contributing were Braun (trumpet, flugelhorn), Kirk Whalum (sax), Philippe Saisse (piano), Stephen Ferrone (drums), Mitchell Foreman (keyboards) and Luis Conte (percussion).

“Part of being a New Yorker is that you’re in a state of constant communication with people. Sometimes words are spoken. Sometimes the communication is just a glance or an unspoken acknowledgement on a subway train, while in line at a newsstand or as you brush past someone in a corner grocer. I wanted this album to capture the constant communication between musicians: the sometimes overt dialogue as well as the subtle exchanges. I embrace living in New York City and I think Grand Central has got a real New York vibe to it,” explained Golub.

To support the release, Golub will again be co-headlining the perennial fan-favorite “Guitars & Saxes” tour with concert dates starting in the spring that will run through summer. On the national trek, he’ll be sharing the stage with Whalum, Gerald Albright and Tim Bowman. Dates and cities will soon be announced.

A native of Akron, Ohio, Golub initially made his name as an in-demand sideman during long-term gigs backing rock stars Rod Stewart and Billy Squire. He released his solo debut in 1988, but then recorded several successful albums in the mid-1990s under his band name, Avenue Blue, which established him as a core artist in contemporary jazz. Golub returned to recording under is own name in 1999 and he has continued to consistently deliver bluesy jazz albums and radio hits ever since. Sirius Meets Subscriber Projections, Still Pondering XM Merger

Amid continued speculation about the possibility of a satellite-radio merger, Sirius Satellite Radio said Tuesday that it finished 2006 with 82% more subscribers than in the previous year, in-line with the company's recently lowered projection.

Sirius said that it ended the year with about 6.02 million subscribers, up from 3.3 million a year earlier and within the company's Dec. 4 forecast of 5.9 million to 6.1 million subscribers.

The forecast was lowered from the company's previous projection of more than 6.2 million subscribers due to slower-than-expected sales after Thanksgiving. Sirius also said Tuesday that it expects to report its first quarter of positive free cash flow in the three months ended Dec. 31.

But such data is of less interest to Wall Street than the broader question of whether Sirius might ever merge with its larger rival XM Satellite Radio. The New York Times recapped on Monday the advantages of a merger for the two companies, pointing out potentially significant cost savings from increased negotiating leverage for programming and the elimination of duplicative programming and employees.

Sirius chief executive officer Mel Karmazin has freely admitted that he'd consider a merger with XM at the right price. And while regulators would likely balk at allowing the nation's satellite radio duopoly to become a monopoly, XM chairman Gary Parsons argued last month at the Credit Suisse Media and Telecom Conference that "we are clearly operating in a much larger marketplace than satellite radio…The competition that the both of us face is clearly dominantly against terrestrial radio."

A new report from technology consultancy In-Stat suggests that terrestrial radio could soon begin making inroads against satellite radio carriers thanks to the gradual rollout of digital radio broadcasts. Such broadcasters will provide far better sound than traditional FM broadcasts and enable radio broadcasters to subdivide the digital portion of a station's signal to broadcast two or more programs simultaneously and thereby offer a broader array of programming – currently satellite radio's trump card.

U.S. adoption of digital radio has greatly lagged that of satellite radio because of the reluctance of major broadcasters to buy digital transmitters until more digital receivers were available, In-Stat analyst Stephanie Ethier says.

But she observes that "terrestrial broadcasters now recognize satellite radio for the real threat it represents" to their audience and advertising revenues. She adds: "As satellite radio becomes more and more prevalent in the U.S., terrestrial broadcasters are responding in an effort to compete with satellite radio."

Digital radio receivers will continue to drop in price and become more widely available over the next several years, just as sales of satellite radio units begin to slow sharply, Ethier says.

Ethier projects satellite radio unit sales in the U.S. and Canada of 6.1 million in 2006, 8 million in 2007 and 11 million in 2010. Meanwhile, she expects digital terrestrial radio unit sales will total 225,000 in 2006, rising to 1 million in 2007 and 5.1 million in 2010.
