This month, we celebrate the artistry and legacy of saxophonist, flutist, and educator Dave Liebman, a true innovator in modern jazz. Born September 4, 1946, Liebman has spent more than five decades expanding the expressive possibilities of jazz, with a career that bridges hard-hitting post-bop, adventurous free improvisation, and world-inspired soundscapes. ­

­ Liebman’s early years included a formative stint with Elvin Jones and, most notably, a key role in Miles Davis’s electric band of the early 1970s. From there, he carved out a career marked by daring exploration—whether leading his own groups like Quest, collaborating with masters such as Richie Beirach and John Abercrombie, or inspiring countless students around the world through his teaching and writing. ­
