*********

A Letter from Matt, to YOU

I am proud to present The Whole Package! – my most ambitious release yet. Released in tandem with The Groove Reawakens by the Matt Savage Groove Experiment, The Whole Package! is still my first acoustic “straight-ahead” jazz album since 2016.

I’m not sure if this recording is meant to be an autobiographical album or not, but maybe it is to some degree? I had been wanting to make a quartet album for a long time… so it’s fitting that The Whole Package! marks ten years since my last quartet CD (2013’s A Bigger Celebration). In the sort of post-traumatic world that we live in, I have been searching for a more dramatic piano sound for the new decade, but one that also feels a little closer to the classic “hard bop” that I have been listening to since childhood. Hence the very wide variety of tempos, augmented by one rock cover.

I hope that this new album speaks to you, in the same way that it has helped me feel confident in who I am today. This album had a very uncertain gestation… and even though the recording went smoothly in the end, one thing I will mention is that we came into the studio with over 20 tunes.Hopefully all this hard work has paid off. But I guess we’ll all have to listen and find out?

Blessings,

Matt

Thus far, she has impressively built a following of nearly 20 million fans across platforms.

Drummer George Coleman Jr. releases new recording "Resurgence" #jazz

George Coleman Jr. - drums

Brian Charette - organ

Michael DiRubbo - alto saxophonist

Paul Bollenback - guitar

Daniel Sadownick - percussion

Richard Livingston Huntley - percussion

George Coleman Sr. - tenor sax

Release Date: Out Now!

Label Legacy Records

George Coleman Jr.’s debut album as a leader, Resurgence, blends his father’s Memphis jazz roots, his mother’s organ sound and his love of Cuban rhythms. Coleman adeptly marries them in a celebration of joy that is bound to make you dance.

Many point to George Jr.’s father tenor saxophone titan George Coleman Sr. as his main influence but in truth it was his trailblazing mother who was his first music teacher.

Gloria Coleman played bass with Duke Ellington, lead the jazz session at Birdland and later played organ with Grant Green, Sonny Stitt and Hank Crawford and composed for vocalists, Etta Jones, Irene Reid, Ernestine Anderson, Joe Lee Wilson and raised two children as single mother. She was George Jr’s first and most important mentor.

Resurgence is creating a buzz amongst established musicians and fans of multiple genres. Veteran producer Michael Carvin highlights the band's bluesy and sophisticated melodic sounds, while paying homage to organ groups of the past with a fresh and modern edge. Renown journeyman musician Richie Morales called it “Beautiful.” Musical prodigy and McArthur Genius Grant award winner Tyshawn Sorey called it “Brilliant work that takes care of the listener.”

Resurgence includes organist Brian Charette, alto saxophonist Michael DiRubbo, guitarist Paul Bollenback, and percussionists Daniel Sadownick and Richard Livingston Huntley. George Jr. chose the musicians careful both for their talents and his long-time personal connections to them. George was the main reason Downbeat Poll Winner Brian Charette came to New York, encouraging him to leave Connecticut and be part of the trial by fire that all musicians experience in New York. George Jr. even shared his rehearsal space with Brian as it was one of the few places, he could practice his Hammond B3. Percussionists Daniel Sadownick and Richard Livingston Huntley have been friends and musical colleagues with George Jr. for several decades. It was Richard who introduced George Jr. to producer Michael Carvin who became his mentor and encouraged George Jr. to complete the documentary film on his family, “Another Kind of Soul, The Coleman Family Legacy” and this album Resurgence.

George’s father, jazz legend George Coleman Sr., makes a special guest appearance on two tracks, on his own “Amsterdam After Dark”, and “Mabe”, co-penned with George Jr. celebrating the late piano great Harold Mabern.

George Coleman Jr. and Resurgence will spend the next six months playing venues in the US and Canada.

About George Coleman Jr.

George Coleman Jr. – Musician/Producer/ Composer/Educator/Film Producer

George was seven when Jazz innovator and master drummer Max Roach gave him his first set of drums. The background music of his childhood was set to the harmonic sophistication of his father, George (“Big George”) Coleman’s saxophone and the classic blues of his mother Gloria’s bass, piano, organ and vocal work. The dedication and creativity of his parents set the standard for “little” George’s early musical efforts, culminating in his acceptance into New York’s prestigious High School of Music and Art.

After graduating from Music and Art George continued his musical studies with a number of master teachers such as Sam Ulano, Michael Carvin, Harold Mabern and Jamil Nasser. Never one to limit himself intellectually George also pursued studies in math and science eventually earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey.

None of George’s teachers has been as influential as the late master percussionist Billy Higgins. Under his tutelage George’s conceptual understanding of both the drums and the music he plays has broadened, leading Higgins to call him “one of the most talented and creative young drummers on the NY Jazz scene.”
