Jazz trumpeter Rick Braun has just completed a new, as-yet-untitled album of original tunes with saxman Richard Elliot, his ARTizen Music Group label partner. The CD will be released this summer, when Braun will be back on the road with Jazz Attack, the superstar group featuring Braun, Peter White, Richard Elliot and Jonathan Butler.
Jazz Attack will kick off their tour on April 14th at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival in Jacksonville, Florida, then continue on to other jazz fests on the summer circuit, as well as regular dates. The foursome will be touring nonstop through late August, with several dates into October. Their band on the road will be drummer Rayford Griffin, guitarist Dwight Sills, keyboardist Ron Reinhardt and bassist Stan Sargeant.
This year's show will differ a bit from last time, Braun told SmoothJazz.com, because "at our age, two years is a long time and nobody can remember what we did in 2005! Fans think we make it look easy, but we really do need to rehearse to get an idea of what we're going to present. Even if we know the material by heart, we can't just jump in front of people and wing it. And, of course, there's the added challenge of introducing new songs from our new album. But we're confident the fans will love them because on every tune we worked on, our main criteria was, will it kill live? We're hoping the energy we created in the studio will translate to the stage."
Braun says he learned his concert philosophy from none other than Rod Stewart: "People are coming out to see a show, and Rod Stewart always used to say, he said: 'Thank you for spending your hard-earned money on my show,'you know. And you know what? That's true. You have to, as an artist, be grateful because people work hard for their money. And to choose to come out and see a show, they don't necessarily want to see an artist standing on stage thinking that it's an audience's privilege to come and see them."
Braun told us: "For me, I feel like I want people to walk away from this show with an experience that's so much more than just putting on my CD. I want them to feel like we've had some sort of experience together and they can walk away saying, 'Boy, I'll never forget that,'you know, 'That was a wonderful night.'"
