George Benson, Dave Brubeck, Dave Koz, John Scofield, Joe Sample and Randy Crawford are just some of the names to light up the milestone 30th annual Tri-C JazzFest in Cleveland, Ohio.
For 11 days, JazzFest presents a world premiere event that mixes music and visuals. The festival has gained national attention for embracing a variety of jazz styles through concerts and educational programs.
JazzFest kicks off with a parade featuring the Shaw High School Marching Band. Winners of more than 150 national competitions, the marching band was one of only five groups in the U.S. invited to participate in the International Music Festival leading up to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
There will be a special blues night as well as shows designed to appeal to the next generation of players and fans. Other performances will encapsulate the broad spectrum of jazz from smooth to Latin to traditional styles.
The festival will also host tributes to such legendary artists as Nat King Cole, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and McCoy Tyner.
Some of the genre’s biggest artists — ground breaking musicians whose appeal has spread to the mainstream — will be on hand, including the aforementioned Benson, Brubeck, Koz, Sample and Crawford.
This is an edited version of an article written for the Morning Journal by John Patrick Gatta. The 30th annual Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland runs through Sunday, May 3rd. For a full schedule, visit tricpresents.com.
