Channeling her suffering and sorrow into songs, singer-songwriter Carol Duboc (www.carolduboc.com) shares the spate of emotions she experienced during the demise of her marriage on the critically-acclaimed new album, “Smile,” which she wrote and produced with Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz icon Jeff Lorber.
Duboc will open her heart to perform a deeply personal set of tunes
from the disc at Jazziz Nightlife in Boca Raton, Florida on July 10
& 11 backed by a quartet fronted by Lorber (keyboards) and bassist Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets).
Penning
the lyrics on “Smile” was like writing diary entries and served as a
form of therapy for Duboc, a Los Angeles-based artist who has penned
tunes for big-selling albums by Patti LaBelle, Stephanie Mills and George Duke
amongst others. The last song she wrote for the record was the title
track, which was inspired by the smile of her young daughter. Despite
her despair, Duboc saw light in her child’s smile, a harbinger of better
days ahead along with a reminder about what is most important in life.
“Smile” was recorded live in the studio featuring Lorber, Haslip, 3-time Grammy-nominee Hubert Laws (flute), Grammy-nominee Brian Bromberg (acoustic bass), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Michael Thompson (guitar), Luis Conte (percussion) and Tim Carmon
(piano). Along with the deftly performed live instrumentation, the
tracks sound distinctly urbane and urban. The grooves are soulful and
funky with light jazz nuances, and enhance the mood for Duboc’s deeply
personal poetic lyricism. Her warm and inviting voice penetrates to the
core making her stories real. Whether confidently seducing with a
passionate coo or expressively revealing vulnerability with her visceral
vocal tone, Duboc’s delivery remains poised and full of grace.
