Multiple Grammy winner Herbie Hancock was named Musician of the Year at the Jazz Journalists Association Awards, held in New York on Wednesday (June 18th). The honor came just six months after earning a Record of the Year Grammy for his CD River: The Joni Letters.Bandleader Maria Schneider, also a previous Grammy winner, was the awards ceremony's biggest winner with four trophies for her Blue Skies CD.
Other winners include trumpeter Terence Blanchard, bassist Christian McBride, violinist Regina Carter, and guitarist Lionel Loueke.
Other Jazz Journalist Association Awards winners included male vocalist Andy Bey, female vocalist Abbey Lincoln, pianist Hank Jones, tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman, baritone saxophonist James Carter, and guitarist Bill Frisell.
Veteran pianist Marian McPartland received a Lifetime Achievement Award and author Doug Ramsey received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Jazz Journalism.
