Chart Notes With Gordon Murray

They've done it again: The Sax Pack (Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters, and Steve Cole) top the chart for an eighth consecutive week, the most this year, with "Fallin' for You" (Shanachie). With a 75+ spin lead and a 3% gain this week, they seem to be padding their lead, ready to take on bigger chart records. Eight weeks at No. 1 marks the longest No. 1 stay since Rick Braun & Richard Elliot spent 10 weeks atop the chart nest last fall with "R n R" (ARTizen).

Najee grabs the Most Increased Plays with "Out of a Dream" (Heads Up) with a ninth consecutive week of spin gains (19-18, up 22). Most Added honors go to Paul Hardcastle's "Marimba" (Trippin 'N' Rhythm), which is stable at No. 8 with 251 plays in a competitive section of the Top 10.

Michael Lington's "You and I" (NuGroove) (26-21, up 22) takes the largest position leap this week. It hails from his just-released label debut, "Heat," which features a hot supporting cast of Aaron Neville, "American Idol" finalist Ace Young and Michael Sembello. The album debuts on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart at No. 20 this week.

Otherwise we have a rather quiet chart week, with no debut, re-entry or Airpower titles. This is in part a result of the loss of WJJZ Philadelphia (its spins are counted this week, as it didn't flip until 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, but weekend action is blank compared to last week). Eric Darius suffered from this and therefore is awarded a rare bullet with a net loss in plays but with an improvement in position, 4-3, with "Goin' All Out" (Blue Note/Capitol).
