Victor Wooten Says SMV Project Melds Three Great Bass Styles

Bassist Victor Wooten, best known for his work with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, joins two other contemporary bass greats, Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller, on the new SMV CD Thunder. The Heads Up International release features the three playing a variety of bass instruments together on a collection of material written by the artists.

Wooten, who remembers his first meeting with Clarke when he was just nine years old, says that working with Clarke and Marcus was easier than it might seem. He explained: "Our individual styles meld together very, very, very well, which doesn't always happen particularly when you play the same instrument as someone else. But because everybody in this group -- Stanley, Marcus, and myself, and especially those two, they are great musicians, they both write movie scores and TV scores, so they think outside of just the instrument, the bass guitar."

SMV recently wrapped the U.S. leg of its tour. The trio heads overseas to Asia and Europe this week with dates through November.

Meanwhile, Wooten and the Flecktones have completed their first holiday album, titled Jingle All The Way. The CD is due September 30th.
