AARP, the world's largest advocacy organization for the 50+ community, will bring its 10-city Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis tour to the Rehoboth Jazz Festival, Rehoboth Beach, on Oct. 17 featuring three-time Grammy winner, radio and TV personality and master pianist Ramsey Lewis. Lewis will be joined by Grammy winning saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera, Grammy nominated singer Kurt Elling and the smooth jazz quartet Fourplay. Each concert (at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center) will feature the best in traditional, Latin and contemporary jazz.
The Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis tour will also feature a unique education program allowing local music students to learn from the legends during sound checks prior to the performances. After the sound check, the students will have the opportunity to ask Lewis one-on-one questions about his music, his influences, and his 50-year career as a composer and performer.
"We are thrilled that Ramsey Lewis is coming to Delaware as part of our 50th anniversary celebration. He is the quintessential ambassador for jazz and the perfect musical virtuoso to lead this series of concerts featuring these exceptional jazz musicians, " said Lucretia Young, AARP State Director. "Ramsey Lewis will speak to audiences through the universal language of music and make a positive difference in the process. His work mentoring young musicians throughout the tour will change young lives for years to come and help build a whole new generation of jazz lovers."
Lewis-who also endowed his own foundation to help young people build self esteem through musicianship-called AARP "the perfect partner, " noting that the organization was founded 50 years ago by a retired educator and has a long history of working for the well-being of all generations.
"All of us on the Legends of Jazz tour look forward to celebrating AARP's 50th birthday through the language of music, " Lewis said. "Together we can make a difference. I believe music is a powerful force for individual self awareness and positive social change."
