In the arena of God given talent, it is apparent that Mindi Abairs' were "supersized". A real saxophonist, a terrific vocalist and an adept composer all adds up to one very talented artist. With "Stars", her debut release on Peak Records, Mindi catapults her supercharged mix of pop, soul and jazz, with its stellar melodies, insinuating rhythms, sultry sax, and seductive vocals into the realm of the extraordinary.
"Stars" represents a musical shift for Mindi. In addition to her signature sax sound, she has effectively integrated more vocals on this album expanding her reach musically and hopefully expanding her reach into a wider audience. Listeners who are constantly searching for something fresh may find renewed zeal in Mindi Abair's latest release. Production-wise, Abair and Matthew Hager (John Taylor of Duran Duran, Simply Red, Scott Weiland, Mandy Moore) complement her core vocal-and sax-driven sound with contributions from a series of top L.A. session and touring players, a few personal heroes, and a couple of famous friends.
As one of only a few female saxophonists in the music world, Mindi Abair is definitely making her own statement and her presence known. "Stars" sends a message worth listening to, as it places Mindi in a stand-alone category when compared to her contemporaries. On top of everything else this CD has to offer, versatility is but one of its many attributes. It‘s guaranteed though that once they get a listen, everyone will be gazing at "Stars" from Mindi Abair.

Marcus Johnson Extends Appeal For Benefit CD
Keyboardist and label owner Marcus Johnson is sending out an appeal to his fans for more support of his CD, In Concert For A Cause, which raises money for the YMCA's Building Bridges Campaign in Maryland.
In his national newsletter, Johnson writes, "As of now, Circuit City has placed my newest CD, In Concert For a Cause, in a national listening station program and brought in a large amount of units nationwide to support it. This is awesome for us and has led to you having the ability to purchase our music in your local area. To be honest, our goal is to get as many sales as we can to make sure they don't return the product and to keep us high on their list for future consideration. So, I'm back to it. Please pass the word on to support Three Keys, our staff, and the YMCA's Building Bridges Campaign by purchasing a copy of In Concert for A Cause at Circuit City."
Concert For A Cause, originally issued in 2006, features a collection of recordings from Johnson's live performances. The album features covers of Talib Kweli's "Just To Get By," Erykah Badu's "Bag Lady" and "On And On," and Beyonce's "Me Myself And I," as well as Johnson originals "88 Ways To Love" and "Sandy Point."
Meanwhile, Johnson is postponing the Jazz Escape Weekend, an all-inclusive jazz weekend at the Club Med Sandpiper in Port St. Lucie, Florida, to 2009. The event was originally set for this fall.
By: Janine Coveney
Buy "Concert For A Cause" at Circuit City
Note: It's unclear to me if all sales of the CD benefit the "Y", or just through Circuit City. It looks like it's about a dollar cheaper at CC anyway, so you can use the link above if you're interested.

Brian Culbertson Gets Boost From Maurice White On New Cd
Click here for the earlier EPK post at JazzHQ.
Instrumentalist, composer and producer Brian Culbertson shows off his funky side on his brand-new album Bringing Back The Funk. While the set includes some of the melodic piano fare Culbertson is known for, the Chicago artist also engages some legendary funk players including Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham, Ronnie Laws, Sheldon Reynolds, Gerald Albright and others for some old-school funk jams.
The project is executive produced by Earth, Wind & Fire legend Maurice White. Culbertson has long been a fan of White's and the two met a few years ago. Culbertson says that initially he and White were collaborating on tunes for a tentative White solo project, but the project changed course.
Culbertson explained: "It is definitely happening. He called me up. He actually heard my version of 'Serpentine Fire'on the radio, and I guess he liked it. So he called me and said, 'Hey man, you know, I'm doing a solo record, do you have any songs?'So I was like, 'Of course! Yes!'So you know, I sent him a bunch of stuff."
Culbertson's first single from the set is "Always Remember," which is already rising on the smooth jazz singles chart.
Bringing Back The Funk will be released on April 29th.

The Sax Pack
The Sax Pack - Jeff Kashiwa / Kim Waters / Steve Cole Shanachie Records (2008)
”The Sax Pack,” huh? Wonder how long it took to dream up that name?
As soon as you see who The Sax Pack is you're either interested or you're not. Between Kim Waters, Jeff Kashiwa and Steve Cole, you have three guys who have been staples of smooth jazz radio for years. They're all seasoned veterans who can be expected to deliver the goods if your idea of “good” is bland background music that isn't going to challenge, surprise or require anything from you.
Let's face it: You're not exactly getting A Love Supreme (Impulse!, 1965) out of these guys.
The album starts off with “Fallin' For You,” a pleasantly bland offering that is probably getting more airplay than it deserves, and ends with an original called “Goin' Home.” Sandwiched in between are seven other tunes that neither excite nor offend. The music of The Sax Pack is the sonic equivalent of the carpet in your dentist's waiting room. You know it's there, but you have no particular reason to pay any attention to it.
Cole and Kashiwa trade off tenor sax toots while Waters noodles along on his alto and soprano saxes. Every so often a guitarist plays a little riff, but otherwise this is pretty much painting-by-numbers stuff. There isn't a single spontaneous or ad-libbed moment on this album. These guys are too much the consummate pros to have an unplanned incident.
You could go to your record collection---not your CD collection---and pull out some dusty old album from 25 years ago and it would still be hotter and hipper than The Sax Pack. This is a collaboration born of calculation, not inspiration.
Trying to blame Waters, Cole and Kashiwa for cold proficiency is like blaming Domino's for bland pizza. The job is not to raise the art form. It's to move product and product is what The Sax Pack is.
If you're not overly ambitious or particularly demanding, you might even like it.
Visit Jeff Kashiwa / Kim Waters / Steve Cole on the web.
Track listing: Fallin' For You; The Sax Pack; All I Really Want; The World Is A Ghetto; Tequila; You Are My Starship; A Little Bit Closer; Maceo; Goin' Home.
Personnel: Kim Waters: alto and soprano sax; Steve Cole: tenor sax; Jeff Kashiwa: tenor sax; David Mann: synths, drum and bass programming; Bernd Schoenhart: guitar; Wayne Bruce: guitar (4); Chris "Big Dog" Davis: keyboards (4, 6); Jeff Golub: guitar (5); Randy Bowland: guitar (6); Gerey Johnson: guitar (8); Mike Ricchiuti: keyboard (9).

Taylor Eigsti - "Let It Come To You"
Let It Come To You is Taylor Eigsti's sixth overall and second Concord Jazz release, marking yet another bold step forward for the Grammy-nominated musician. Let It Come To You is an impressive 11-song collection of imaginatively refreshed standards, creative interpretations of newer works from artists as diverse as Pat Metheny and the pop band Eels, as well as four original compositions.
"I wanted this record to be a combination of much of the fun music and arrangements of jazz standards that my group has been performing live, songs like "Caravan," "Fever," Deluge" and "I Love You," and my own compositions, which primarily reflect the concept of acceptance toward the things in life that were - and are - out of my control," says Eigsti. Co-produced by Eigsti and Chris Dunn, Let It Come To You features a solid group of musicians including longtime collaborator Julian Lage on guitar, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums - as well as such special guests as Joshua Redman on tenor saxophone and Edmar Casteneda on Columbian harp.
Eigsti opens the CD with swinging exuberance on Cole Porter's "I Love You," one of several tunes on Let It Come to You that are studio first takes. It's followed by another spontaneous take of Pat Metheny's "Timeline," which is dedicated to the late Michael Brecker and on which Joshua Redman guests, taking two dynamic solos and trading at the end with Eigsti. Other reimagined covers include Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Portrait in Black and White," Wayne Shorter's "Deluge," and pop band Eels' "Not Ready Yet." In addition to the title track, Let It Come to You also features an ambitious, multilayered three-part "Fallback Plan Suite," which includes "Less Free Will,(*Listen: scroll to listen) "Not Lost Yet," and "Brick Steps."
Eigsti's Concord Jazz debut, Lucky to Be Me, took the former child prodigy to an entirely new level of success. He was featured on the covers of both Jazziz and Keyboard magazine and was also profiled in his own BET-J television special. The CD spent 23 weeks on the national jazz radio airplay charts, peaking at No. 7, and was among the top 15 most-played jazz albums on radio for 2006. Lucky to Be Me earned two GRAMMY nominations for Best Instrumental Composition and for Best Instrumental Jazz Solo Performance.
Tracklisting

Fattburger's Carl Evans Jr. Passes Away
Carl Evans Jr., keyboardist for the popular San Diego band Fattburger, passed away last Thursday (April 10th) from complications of diabetes.
Last December, Evans underwent surgery to remove his left leg below the knee. To help pay for his medical costs, the band and other musical friends held several benefit shows in San Diego. The most recent show, held in February at Humphrey's By The Bay, also featured Evans'longtime friend and bassist Nathan East of Fourplay.
Fattburger previously lost a group member in September 2006, when saxophonist Hollis Gentry died two years after being injured in an automobile accident.
The group's most recent CD was 2004's Work To Do, featuring several cover tunes as well as original Fattburger tunes.
