Chart Notes

Let's parse the numbers
By Gordon Murray
Dave Koz stands proudly at No. 1 once again with "Life In The Fast Lane" (Capitol), for a seventh week. Labelmate Eric Darius follows with "Goin’ All Out" (Blue Note/Capitol) at No. 2, making this the eighth consecutive week that he and Koz have nested in the top two spots. At seven weeks at the top Koz ties Jessy J's "Tequila Moon" (Peak/CMG) and Kenny G's "Sax-o-loco" (Starbucks/Concord/CMG) for the 2nd-most weeks at No. 1 this calendar year. Only The Sax Pack has more: their "Fallin' For You" (Shanachie) ruled the roost for 10 weeks.

Leapin' Jesse Ties Leapin' Jessy: "Havana," (Coach House/Koch) Jesse Cook’s follow-up to his Top 5 smash "CafĂ© Mocha," surges ten spots with the week’s Most Increased Plays in only its second week on the chart (30-20, up 28). This marks the first time that any song has leapt ten positions since Jessy J's "Tequila Moon" (Peak/CMG) did it in the leap-dated issue, February 29.

Beyonce collects both Airpower and Most Added honors with "At Last" (Music World/Columbia). This song is not from Beyonce's new studio album: instead, it hails from the soundtrack of "Cadillac Records." Opening December 5, this film features Beyonce in the role of the Etta James. "At Last" picks up adds at KJZY/Santa Rosa and WNUA/Chicago, and scores Airpower honors, up 23-17 monitored (+21) and up 16-13 on the audience side (up 16%).

Dessert lover Chris Standring wants it all, and this week his efforts earn him Airpower honors for his song "Have Your Cake & Eat It" (Ultimate Vibe). It's up 19-18 (+7) on the monitored chart and 22-20 (+13%) on the audience side, sweet gains indeed.

Norman Brown's former No. 2 knockout "Pop's Cool Groove" (Peak/CMG) enjoys its 42nd week on the chart, slipping 11-13. If Brown can last two more weeks he'll tie the leader for Most Chart Weeks on the Nielsen BDS chart: Chuck Loeb's "Window Of The Soul" (Heads Up) (44 weeks).

New this week are Kim Waters "Let's Get On It" (Shanachie) at No. 28, and Kenny G "Sabor A Mi" (Starbucks/Concord/CMG) at No. 30.

Recommended Listening: In the last few days I once again just can't stop listening to the Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis collaboration "Two Men With The Blues" (Blue Note/BLG). This superstar connection debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart in the July 26 issue, staying on top for four weeks overall, is still in the Top 10 this week, and deserves every moment of success it gets. Recorded during a two-night stand at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on January 12 and 13, 2007, the album is a uniqueBusiness," Nelson & Marsalis brilliantly cover some of the best rock, jazz, blues, and country songs of all time. The closer, "That's All," is the highlight, featuring an energetic solo from drummer Ali Jackson. It's difficult to say 'that's all' to this record; a good move would be to keep it on repeat. listen, with a tremendous amount of talent (Marsalis' standout band included) making every note really 'work.' This is one album that brings us songs from the Great American Songbook that joyfully swings and gently but cheerfully touches the heart. From "Stardust" to "Georgia On My Mind" to "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It" to "Ain't Nobody's Business,"
