Tim Bowman strengthens his grip of the No. 1 perch this week, holding with "Sweet Sundays" (Trippin 'N' Rhythm) (+13). Following Bowman, after four weeks at No. 4 and 10 weeks in the Top 10, is Warren Hill with "La Dolce Vita" (Evolution/Koch) (4-2, +24). Hill last appeared on the chart as a featured artist on Steve Oliver's "On the Upside" (SOM) earlier this year, and slightly less than three years ago he hit No. 36 on the Nielsen BDS chart with "Still in Love" (Popjazz/Native Language). Hill's uphill momentum pushes Eric Darius back to No. 3 with "Goin' All Out" (Blue Note/Capitol), even though it loses just one spin. Darius had spent the last seven weeks at No. 2 and has spent nine weeks at that position overall, good for the most weeks at No. 2 in 2008 (with two weeks in between at No. 1).
Beyonce gathers the Most Added song for the third consecutive week with "At Last" (Music World/Columbia), this week adding KRVR/Modesto, Calif., and WDSJ/Dayton to her tally. "At Last" continues its assault on the chart, using the week's Most Increased Plays (+26) to fly within inches of the Top 10 (16-12).
Jesse Cook grabs Airpower honors with "Havana" (Coach House/Koch). Cook is up 20-17 (+26) in the pecking order on the detections side while also flapping up 20-9 (+64%) on the audience side, thereby generating the designation.
The Sax Pack's "Fallin' for You" (Shanachie) finally migrates to the recurrent chart this week after an impressive chart run of 40 weeks. During this time they spent the most weeks at No. 1 of any song this year (10), the sixth-most weeks in the Top 10 (23), the third-most weeks in the Top 20 (36) and the third-most total weeks on the chart (40). Indeed, only three songs have spent more total weeks on the Nielsen BDS chart in its history thus far: Jay Soto's "Slammin" (NuGroove) (41), Norman Brown's "Pop's Cool Groove" (Peak/CMG) (42), and Chuck Loeb's "Window of the Soul" (Heads Up) (44).
This week's chart is rounded out with three new tasty treats: Matt Marshak's "On the Rocks" (Nuance) at No. 28, Seal's "A Change Is Gonna Come" (Warner Bros.) at No. 29 and Candy Dulfer's "Smokin' Gun" (Heads Up) at No. 30.
Recommended Listening: Frank Catalano's fifth album, "Bang!" (Savoy Jazz/SLG), is lively, catchy, fun, funky and seductive. Frank is a hip and talented player who shows he can expand past what's typical while not abandoning traditional jazz stylings. Seven of the album's 10 excellent tracks (no skippers!) are original compositions, and they play anywhere from under two to nearly eight minutes each. Catalano produced this musical narrative himself while also contributing his tenor saxophone, alto flute and programming talents, efforts which last summer took the album up to No. 12 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart. The unusual highlight is the late-night gossipy rant "Later," which features an "Angry Chick Overdub" by Jen Faletto. Perhaps this little song brings to life the character seen pointing a gun at a smiling Catalano's head in the album's artwork? I can't confirm that, but I can tell you that you'll enjoy listening (loudly!) to the energetic, rolling jams crafted by the Chicago native and his stellar live band of piano, bass, drums and percussion. Lighthearted yet heartfelt, "Bang!" is worth your bucks.
