Saxophonist Gerald Albright has received a Grammy nomination for his work on the Memphis/Stax Records tribute CD Sax For Stax. The project was named in the best pop instrumental album category.
Albright, who has never won a Grammy Award, has some stiff competition in the category from guitarist Earl Klugh, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Spyro Gyra, and guitarist Larry Carlton.
Albright, who plays a variety of instruments and had a hand in arranging the material on Sax For Stax, says he worked hard on the project to maximize his resources and the recording's overall sound. He told Pulse: "It was just a fun recreational time for me because I had to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together to make this thing work, and it was kind of a unique project for me, so... I always like a challenge. And I didn't want to do just another Gerald Albright record, I wanted there to be something -- part of the same portfolio but a different department or category of it, you know what I mean. So I think we were very successful in that mission."
Albright, who performed at the Cayman Jazz Festival in the Caribbean last night (December 4th), will rejoin the Soulful Christmas holiday tour tonight (December 5th) in Memphis at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. The Soulful Christmas lineup includes vocalists Will Downing and Lalah Hathaway.
